My biggest fingerboarding mistake is following trends that don’t agree with my preferences. I’ve been using plastic wheels forever and switching to urethane just didn’t do it for me. Forcing myself to use those wheels just because it was cool kept me from enjoying fingerboarding because I couldn’t get used to how grippy they were.
I say, play how you want to play.
For me I just use what I think looks good and feels comfortable
But honestly I can’t say much because I’ve always used tech decks
That reminds me I love tech deck graphics, might throw some foam grip and bearing wheels on them for a setup

Old VCR's and DVD players make perfect ledges & manual pads. They usually only cost around $10 at the thrift store 🤙🏻
or some tile one 4x4 inch square only cost around a us dollar🤟

Great video! I really agree with your point about having an expensive deck with cheap parts, some of my favorite set ups are cheap tech decks with foam tape and inverted kingpins, maybe some bearing wheels. for being under $20 they feel amazing!
My most recent setup was a 32mm plastic TD with modded tapers on the trucks and the cheapest urethane bearing wheels. 6 for the deck, 5 for the wheels. With 15 minutes of work its So smooth. Still need to try foam grip, though, but I can Ollie like a pro.

Yo, for me, 32mm trucks on a 33/34mm deck, goes hard af. I super recommend it. Also, kingpin super tight.

This isn't a mistake I made but I see a ton of kids using the most expensive fingerboard setup when they can even do a ollie, they're the type of kids who are spoiled and that's not good, If they start out with a tech deck and use it for awhile until they can Ollie then they can get a nice setup, I started out with a classic tech deck that was 26mm learnt the ollie, got a tech deck performance series and learnt a kickflip and a while later got a pro fingerboard.
Yesss! Good advice. i learned to ollie on a dollar store fingerboard and kickflip on a techdeck.

My kickflip a of late have been turning front 180 I just got a 36m board this is also after a long sesh I find I get worse not better

You can use chapstick as wax and it only costs a dollar
