Springers are possibly the best all round dog someone could have, I love my Springer!
You didn't talk at all about them being one of the best pirates [ARRRR] around. If you own a Springer, make sure to keep any food well back on the counter and/or keep them out of the kitchen (if you can) when cooking (oh that wonderful nose!). I've lost a whole pound of raw hamburger (there goes the cook-out), and leg quarter of lovely cooked chicken (at least this time it got on the grill), oh so many more losses there too numerous to mention here, but one that I will add; I am learning to make cakes from scratch and had taken days to plan, bake and decorate my son's b'day cake...double chocolate. The cake was on the counter, pushed back, but not far enough. I went to the laundry room to start the dryer and came back to the sound of dog-eating-cake. I got back in time to save the cake the cake (mostly). Duncan had taken a big bite out of the lovely cake and was licking up crumbs off the floor, about to go up for a second helping when I walked it yelling. I'm able to give him credit for flouncing, kicking and leaping with glee (as chocolate can cause a dog to feel drunk...Okay, he was just really happy.) and stopped to lick a bit of frosting off his leg. They are also real Houdi-s; he can let himself into the kitchen by opening the "dog gate". The Houdini list will have to wait for another posting (you have been warned. it includes my childhood Springer, Spot.) This comment has gotten a wee bit long. Congrats! You've made it to the end. You get a doggie treat!

I have a Field Springer with American and British Champion lines. He is the best Hunting dog I have ever had and a great companion. As a senior hunter having a dog that doesn't wander out of shotgun range is a big plus. My first hunting dog was a lab and they love to wander. Springers are easily whistle trained too.
My childhood dog, Spot loved to hunt. I have to admit, Dad was the only one he listened to fully. We kids, well he hardly listened to unless we got out of eye shot. he'd sniff us out to keep us safe. Hide-and-go-seek was a great game! He was a great dog with a good nose, but he ran so fast that he got too close to the rabbits. Dad was afraid to the the shot. The rabbit got away and Spot would turn around and look at Dad like "what the heck???" I could tell you stories...but I will just let you off with a warning: Don't get me going on Spot.
