  • Recognized as "the most beautiful lab in the world" by most search engines, Arielle Prater was a special lab indeed. Here, owner Marty Vaughan says "see you later" to his baby girl. As an amateur filmmaker, this was his way of processing the grief of losing a dog.

I lost my Beauty today, my sweet old 12-year-old pup 10 days ago. She was the sweetest Dog you'd ever meet. I still remember when I was little and my Dad, me, and brothers went to pick her up. She was a rescue dog and was loved dearly by my family and me. I'm only 20, she is my fourth dog to pass, but she is my first dog to pass peacefully from old age. I was lying next to her earlier playing songs like this and crying. She'd lay her head by me to try to comfort me. Man, I hope God takes dogs home to Heaven!

"Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together."

I will always remember his excitement when I'd return home from work. It was the highlight of my day. He and many companions over the years have brought me joy, and tears of sorrow at their loss. I think these fur people are the gift of unconditional love that makes this life's journeys bearable. Creatures Great & Small teach us to, also, love unconditionally. Thinking, we have all this time in front of us. Feeling so happy… He died just short of his 14th birthday… He’s been gone over 2 years now… Still my 💔 breaks for him… This video made me weep for him…

Totally agree. I wish they lived as long as us. The only good thing about that is their shorter time gives more time in our longer lives for us to love and rescue more of them. But it's so much heartbreak. I like to think of it like kintsugi, which is the Japanese practice of repairing pottery with gold. One mixes gold into the lacquer used to repair something, which preserves and beautifies the repair as part of the object's history, rather than hiding it. The loss of a fur baby breaks out hearts, but then we fall in love with a new one and they mend our hearts with gold lacquer. We never forget the past that broke it, but it's beautiful and bittersweet.

I had to go through this with my sweet old dog a couple weeks ago. The same look in her eyes as yours....just the tiredness. She was ready to go, I was sure of it, but I had no idea when. She'd been having issues for months. At one point, she literally could not stand up or walk by herself. Trial and error through that led to some messiness of which I won't go into detail. But steroids ended up giving her a few bonus months where she was damn near back to her old self. Chasing squirrels, barking up a storm. I loved it, and learned to appreciate what I'd been missing.
Then the inevitable came. The cancer caught up. She started to go downhill. Nothing sudden or earth-shattering, but she progressively got worse.
She wouldn't get up to go outside that evening a couple weeks ago, content to lay down on the wood floor in the coolest part of the house. Even though going outside meant it was time to go follow me around mowing, which she NEVER missed, and absolutely loved. She wasn't up for it.
      I didn't mow that evening.
Around 9:30, she and the other dog wanted outside. Yeah, she actually wanted out! She got up, worked the stiffness out, and walked out, I figured to lay on the cool deck, maybe do her business in the yard. Heard a scratch at the door (their knock to come back in) maybe 5 minutes later. Opened the door, my other dog walked in, and there she lay. Peaceful and cool on the deck. She was gone.
I decided she needed to be buried just off "her spot" on the deck. Right off the corner where she sat, scoping things out, keeping her pack safe. Naturally, it was the most godforsaken, clay-packed, rocky, hardest part of the lawn. Took me a solid 5 hours, and I still didn't get it as deep as I wanted. I suspect she found that amusing.

I don't know how or why I stumbled upon this, but I'm at work doing everything I can to dry my tears. My lab has epilepsy and I've said goodbye to her at least 20 times dropping her off at late-night ER visits, thinking I would never see her again. We finally got her medication calibrated and she's been seizure free for nearly two years. However, 18 pills a day are starting to take a toll on her liver. We've only grown closer in the 6 years of battling this disease. She's my soul dog, goes everywhere with me and never leaves my side. Like you said, I will never stop loving her as long as I live; I just beg for a few more good years with Tara.

I live in a rural area where many people, I won't call them humans have over the past 30 years come to throw away unwanted and often sick and old dogs. I took them all in, fed them and took care of their medical needs. At one time I had 8 dogs and at present have 4. I loved them all and they gave it back 10 fold. I know I will see them all again. I had to put down the best friend I have ever had. It rendered my heart into pieces. I went clinically insane for a while. But, no one knew. I was in the Navy and had to keep up appearances. He was perfect and we loved each other so much. But he got old faster than me. He was suffering. No other animal friend can replace Randy. Here I am 45 years later, still suffering. He was my one and only dog, never one after him. I miss him so much. I look forward to seeing him again when it's my time to go. That time can't come soon enough. No human has meant as much to me.

He was/is my heart dog and we did everything together for 18 years. Simon touched everyone he met. We just connected on every level and got each other. I will never lose this profound sadness I feel for him and the yearning to be with him. Still cry everyday. I feel like you do-that no other animal can ever replace your Randy and my Simon. I wouldn’t want one to. Take care of yourself.

Charles, i feel the same way. I have had dogs and still have 2 but I just lost my one and only TRUE soul dog 2 weeks ago. My heart has been ripped to shreds. She was my life. EVERYTHING was about her. Every single waking moment revolved around her. she made me laugh, she talked to me with her eyes. I knew her thoughts. we were connected. I have never in my life cried over anything so hard in my life...not even a family member. She was the reason I got up every day. Now she's gone..the house is quiet, the routine has been flipped on its head and every damn thing makes me think of her I cannot stop crying. I am pretty tough but I tell ya..this one knocked me down hard. Not sure I can get back up. I miss her so damn much. And no she isn't my profile pic. Her name was Diamond and she was a brindle pit mix and loved EVERYBODY and everything. She was my Diamond. Big Pharma killed her.

My son had a precious pitbull. That dog loved me as his grandmother and those children were his special charge. He helped the baby to learn to crawl. He lay down under the swing, the crib, etc. He loved all of us, but those babies belonged to him. There will never be another dog like Dakota. When the little one got very sick and had to be taken to a children's hospital several hours away, he lay down facing the door and started crying.

I'm In tears. I put down 3 labs in a year and a half. All were 13 years old. I have two more, now; one is about14months, the other 8 months. When you said "theologists say differently", they need to read Genesis. It refers to "the souls of animals".

This was so beautiful. Last week, I lost one of my babies. They were sisters. One was the runt and we also got her sister when we found out they were inseparable. Bella knew her little sister was fragile and was constantly watching over her. Where one was, there was the other one. Now little Boots is having to tell me when she needs to go out. Her little eyes are so sad. She isn't eating very much. The only times she has smiled has been when my son and his family come over. She gets all excited, her eyes sparkle, and she runs and jumps like she did when her sister was alive. I guess she knows I'm hurting, too. She wants to constantly be in my arms. She likes to be held like a baby in the crook of my arm. We comfort one another. I hope to see Bella. I know she's waiting for me and Boots to join her. ♥

I came across this video while trying to deal with the lost of my 2 cats... 16 years together, brother and sister... This year is been bad from the start, I was at the emergency room with the brother on new years eve and I had the feeling that it was not going to be a good year back them but never anticipate the final outcome... I lost the brother in February due to a really aggressive cancer and I lost the sister in June after 3 years fighting CKD... The plan was to stay with the brother as he would accept a new kitty to help him and help me the lost of his sister... But as life is never easy, now I am alone and struggling with their departures... I only know that I must keep going as that was my promise to them ❤

I recently lost my13 year old yellow lab Roxie to cancer. She was the first dog I truly owned all by myself and we shared a special bond. Before the she left, I told her that when its my time to finally move on from this earth I hope and pray that God will send her to guide me home . I don't know if animals have souls our if they go to heaven, but if heaven is a place where we are to be reunited with our loved ones than I have to believe that she will be there along with the rest of my family. To anyone who just lost their pet, my heart breaks for you and I hope you find the strength to move on and perhaps even open your heat up to another little friend.

I truly believe God wouldn't have given us such a strong need for the love we have to give to them and their need to love us not to. I believe in the Rainbow Bridge, I believe all the animals I've had in my life are running and playing until I too go home.
