I enjoy watching each of these jets but to be quite honest, watching the F-4 Phantom takeoff made my heart go pitter-pat. I'm just an old school guy who once watched those beautiful machines lift into the air in the early 80s at NAS Oceana. My senior officers in the two squadrons I served with were old school F-4 guys in Vietnam, which is why I have a special place in my heart for that jet. Good times. Thank you for the post.
i love the phantom, I remember as a child we we would hear them flying at eye level up and down the east coast in the UK in the 1970's, we had a bungalow on the cliff front, and would run to front garden to watch them, the pilots would wave, just lovely memories. (living in Australia now)
Wonderful to see the F-4's are still operating, In 2013 I was on a cruise ship and by the Greece shore I saw 2 F-4's flying fairly close to our ship. Oh that wonderful sound!
I believe there are about twenty or so left with the Hellenic air force. I had a similar experience on a boat between zante and kefalonia a few years back. Stunning to see them over the sea
The F4E "Aegean Ghost" they call them if i remember correct. They got F18 radar, glass canopy, upgraded propulsion, updated ews and some. I bet they will be around for 5 more years..
'Aegean ghost' is the cammo, which was first used on F-16s (originating in a US Navy F-16N aggressor cammo) but was also applied to F-4s after their upgrade. The upgrade was called 'Peace Icarus 2000' so you may see those Phantoms referred to as F-4E PI2000. They're supposed to keep flying until 2027 but we'll see. Turkey upgraded its own F-4s at around the same time, calling that program 'Terminator 2020', and they were supposed to be replaced by F-35s but that's not going to happen. They're trying to replace them with new F-16Vs now but it's not going so well either, so they could well be in service for longer than the Greek ones.
They still won't be any match for the 3rd, 4th and 5th generation fighters. No matter how many upgrades they have received. Their still a phantom, old difficult to maintain, and whoever thinks that they will be a force to be reckoned with should take their hands off it.
For many of us "Cold War Warriors" the Phantom will always have that special place in our heart that cannot be filled by any other aircraft. Great video; thank you.
Phantom followed by Flanker, that is well worth the trip. The location isn't too bad to stay either. I hope to get a chance to see both someday. Thanks for the captures!
As a kid, I loved the phantoms. The quirky upturned wingtips, downward rear tail stabilizer, all the bad aerodynamics. Still like them in a brutish way.
The Panavia Tornado - one of the most advanced strike aircraft in the world at introduction. It included an highly advanced attack planning data system that involved using a map point plotter loading the flight points onto a C60 cassette that was then put into the aircraft's flight computer. At the time, state of the art. These days, laughably archaic.
@Dafydd Phillips I grew up next East Midlands Airport. Rolls Royce kept a Spitfire there or at least it was there a lot in the summer. We all new sound of that engine as boys.
Other ""modern" planes look good but, Phantom? C'mon ... Phantom something else. Like a Rolls Silver Shadow surrounded by Lamborghini's! Different era, different purpose but still elegant. We call "Baba/Father" for F4's, and I should tell you guys; Baba Phantom my own whole time favorite amongs military jet planes. Greetings from Turkiye to Phantoms whom nest other side of the sea. We salute you Baba!
Love Daffyds work, always worth a look. Is is possible to have Make, Model and Country/Squadron/Unit a permanent addition, it really helps? The Greeks still fly tombs, wow!
Boy those Tornados and Phantoms are beasty looking aircraft. Oh coffee (or Tea) and jet fuel is a great way to start your day. From the back room " honey what's that noise?", nothing Im at the airport.
I was still under the impression if you accidentally took a photo etc of the old Greek warbirds you got arrested for spying. I guess times have changed. Love the F4-e Phantom still as an old bloke. There is a story that when the first US pilots got them they said they had thought they had delivered them upside down as it was a bit of a "bus" A bus that was fantastic at its job.
Good question but not sure the answer sorry, I’ve seen lots of aircraft doing lots of manoeuvres over the years and yet to establish which is the loudest. Almost went deaf in Switzerland standing behind the side of a legacy hornet taking off, that was something else. Got to be cooler than going deaf from a hearing infection I guess 🤠
Unpopular opinion here - I'm sorry but the Sukhoi just looks so menacing, like a cobra ready to strike. I am from USA and am a little jealous of Russian design sometimes. Our jets rule the skies, but the Russians sometimes look more badass, and that's hard to do.
What was it??! Exercise, or what(saudi 15, french Rafale, jordanian 16, italian Tornados, indian Su-30MKI, spanish 18, etc..) What was happend??! I do not know anything about this excrcise.. Does it anyone?
Well, the F16 is arguably the most elegant jet fighter ever made. The F4 looks brutally handsome - I bet it flies like a brick. The F14 is the coolest ever - but they were not there. ;)
I love the old lady F4 Phantom thank you Greece for still flying them🇬🇷💙

Amazing assortment of fighters.
Great to watch the Hellenic Phantom leading the parade .
Daff, hope you got more in store from your stay in Greece.

F4 phantom still one of my all time fave aircraft. The last bit of footage with the F22 was stunning.
What a blast! Phantom and Tornado, highlights for me, thanks Dafydd another good video.

Superbly cool footages on these awesome takeoffs in Greece especially the F-4E Phantom II and the Dassult Rafale C 😎😁
Thanks Douglas, they gave a great variety✈️✈️✈️
@@DafyddPhillips woe!!! Fantastic lot and much welcome Phillips 😎😁
So weird seeing Phantoms and Tornados still in active use.
What are those things like 60 yeas old? Spare parts are not off the shelf at Home Depot, lol.
India still has the MiG 21 Fishbed in service.
@AMCDS the F-4 was originally designed to combat the MiG-21
@@Phuc_Yhou yes, they're from the same generation, but the Fishbed is a less sophisticated fighter than the Phantom.
even in Germany the last F4 Phantom left Service in 2013... was great to see them in the skies.... very reliable jet...😊
Wow, wide range of machinery! Tornado and that Phantom were my favourites (showing my age I expect). 👍
Those old Phantoms don't know how to die.
Thanks for sharing Dafydd, Salut!
I’m desperate to catch them flying low level in Greece. Thanks as always carol
What a mixture! Like a dream!
Brilliant as always! Thank you, Dafyyd! :)

As always, THANKS! Love the F4!
Thanks for watching Tim. 👍

Thanks for watching lance
Still loving your work fella! Much as I love the F4,F16, F35 - am convinced there is no finer sight than an F15 in full loadout.
Thanks roger, couldn’t agree more about the F15 👍

Ah, the F4 Phantom! The Flying Brick. Described by one of the designers as a triumph of thrust over aerodynamics.
Phantoms never die!
Thank you for placing the info of tge taking-off fighters, it is a very good idea indeed

Retro Vintage equipment with the phantom which is beautiful to see.(also the Tornado is absolutely beautiful too).
Couldn’t agree more ✈️👍
Vintage equipment with a radar better than an F-16 and 8 AMRAAMS can cause a lot of damage to more sophisticated enemies at a lower cost.
Great job as usual. A Spitfire flew over my home in Ashbourne Derbyshire today super low. It did a few turns then left. Incredible.
Thank you, bet the sound of the merlin was amazing !!

Nothing like some "heavy metal" to get the show started! Twin J79's screaming will definitely get your attention! #phantom #rhino #phantomsphorever
