  • When they seem so similar on paper it can be a hard decision. For those looking to get their first, their second or just another Tele, we take a look at the similarities and the differences between a Squier Affinity Telecaster and the Fender Player Series Telecaster.

I believe the Player Series also has a thicker body. If you want to gig with that Squier you can really do so with about $130 in upgrades... basically get some Fender Alnico 5 pickups, something like Tex-Mex. Then get a Tone Shaper wiring kit that has all U.S. made parts (CTS 250k pots, Oak Grigsby switch, 22 Orange drop, treble bleed and cloth wires)... BOOM, you're all set. A lot of country players do this.

    I have one of each!
Sometimes you need a "name" on the headstock; other times you need a "beater".
They sound slightly different: the Squier is more "rough & ready"; the Player more "modern". The Squier neck pup is perhaps not the best by itself, but it's fine when used together with the bridge pup (ie the middle position).
I've recorded with them both, depending on what sound would best suit the track.
    They're both good guitars imo.

The 2021 Affinity Telecaster has a tummy cut, string through body, and gloss headstock. It even comes in the same butterscotch blonde as the Mexican Player featured here.

Yep yer right, that can't be a '21 affinity. They also have the slightly wider nut now and the "newly voiced" pickups whatever that means

I'd certainly go for the Squier instead of $800 more for the Fender. In fact, I'd rather buy five Squiers for the price of the Fender.

So in the video you say that the $1000 guitar is better than the $200 guitar because "you'd know", and then you do a jam where the two guitars sound essentially identical. Thanks for clearing that up for us.

    Agreed, it's about the 'feel'.

  • @dzungpham

To sound compare, it would be better as if you would use finger picking with slow melody rather than strumming or with high tempo. the difference remains in the quiet not the noise.

I got a Squire Affinity telecaster on a trade, the shaft on the volume potentiometer broke.
When I got to replace it I found it has 500k pots. I made a little mistake with a 250k.

Very LITTLE in it! The Fender had a little more low mid to the sound, so the pick ups were comparable on the bridge units anyway. The neck pick ups were more marked. The Squier was darker, but again not drastically, BUT it was there!

The player sounds far better to me, at times the affinity sounded awful. I am a firm believer you get what you pay for, the build is the justice ( hence the price ) people always trying to say budget guitar's are the same, but really their just trying to say it, because they can't afford the premium.

  • @manonbassguitar

Wrong, I could make an affinity work for gigging. They sound exactly the same. I just got one that’s incredible. It’s a shit ton of hype. I used to be MIA Fender snob, but the Squiers of the last 10-15 years are spanking Fender, especially the new ones.

Another "Can ya hear it" huh? Yeah I can hear a difference. The originals, I'll use a old axiom, up the neck had a more 'bukkerish tone a muffled, I don't use "muddy", while the upgrades had a twangier crisper kouder more single coil especially down around 12 and below ut really stood out to me. Thanks agaib for the tip on this vid! Oh Justin , Man I wabt your Tele....even before upgradeed. Mustard Blobde BLAXKguard! My dream Tele! Who? Prince? Springsteen? Yep, in 67 a Femriend in the 'burbs of NYC where I grew up had a regular white blonde(?) the regular Tele common color with, aggghhh, a white puck guard. I got to play it!
