Here I am, 43 years old, schooling my 15 year old son on real rap and this song still hits like no other. I remember when this song dropped, i was younger than my son is now and it means even more now than when I was a teenager.
One of the things Smif N Wessun and the rest of BCC did so well was going back and forth line to line instead of just taking turns with verses. You could tell the chemistry between that whole crew was organic.
This is what I've been saying for years now, the back-and-forth art is an old school performance act that is dying but when done properly is super dope. Smif N Wessun was one of the best to do this. Nas and Kool G Rap also did well on "Fast Life". I wish more duos would do this
This beat is sooooo hypnotic. Such a classic example of NY Hip Hop. No other city was fucking with 1970s, 80s, 90s, and early 2000s NY. Even those who tried learned that shit. Those times built up strong characters and upbringing for the artists from there, and the music reflects it
+Raider Hazard the west ruled COMMERCIALLY only during the early 90s, but guys like Rakim, Chuck D, Kool G Rap, Onyx, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, DITC, Wu Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, Redman, Freddie Foxxx, AZ, Gang Starr, Black Moon, and Masta Ace still released classic albums during those years. By the time 94 came, the East, and especially artists from NY have already surpassed in quality, and matched in sales, even surpassing sales by the late 90s. The West fell off after 96. It's not even a comparison 🙄

Something changed fast in those days. rappers were messagers, and lyrics and videos were messages. Even the shot of him rising off a mattress on a street in broad daylight felt like a snapshot of when people were harmonious with their habitat. But I remember seeing this video like once or twice back then (no RUclips or internet) and it would be cut short so other videos could make it in rap city’s 2 hour run time. Mind you, in those days I heard BIG’s “Big Poppa” hundreds of times on several different video shows and this was around the time when Pac was still locked up and 2pacalypse Now was still hot and Me against the world was soon to come, so rap was still very much “organic.” Think, “Keep ya Head Up” and “Dear Mama”…then in comes BIG with flashy, pompous-style rap that really put a man with insecurities on full display, front and center. BIG was a self proclaimed “fat, black, and ugly as ever” guy, bad to his women mentally, emotionally, and physically but his lyrics and flow was so smooth that he slid right into the game with no barriers and took it over. PAC’s next project would be “All eyes on me” which also began to depart from the organic sound and feel of hip hop, then before you knew it..EVERYONE was talking about Coogi sweaters, diamonds, alcohol, and female audience members were beginning to embrace the “bitches and hos” monicker that Queen Latifa, Mc Lyte and others were fighting so hard against. It all went down from there. PAC’s killuminati was his attempt to course-correct, but it was too late..the “agenda” had to move forward. So in all, YES..I THINK BIG BROUGHT THE DOWNFALL OF HIP HOP and Puff finished the job.
