- In an era when memes can take musicians to the top of the charts within a matter of weeks, an increasing number of artists are being labeled as industry plants. Many independent singers and rappers who experience a sudden surge in popularity are given the tag, which implies that they were actually receiving support from a record label all along. For insight into the controversial topic, Genius spoke to industry insiders including A&R executives, producers, journalists, and even Atlanta musician Raury, who was once labeled an industry plant himself.

An industry plant is someone who puts on a facade that they came from nothing, no connections, no money but then it turns out they have major label support. The major label essentially 'plants" them into the music industry with that came from nothing persona to trick fans into believing they are supporting a come up story from the artist.
Skev Beats thanks for the explanation. The video didn't explain this correctly.

This is an interesting theory.
So Billie eilish is a plant.

"the music will last longer than your feelings"
who said that?
And my friends, this too proves: It’s who you know.
If anyone, Genius is the real industry plant!
"If the music resonates, does it really matter how it started?"
Well, actually those artists aren't resonating. Most of those songs and artists are being forgotten fast.
Memes are the best way for artists to become succesful. Artists become famous because of memes nowadays, for example:
Juice WRLD - Lucid Dreams
Lil Nas X - Old Town Road
Rae Sremmurd - Black Beatles
Bazzi - Mine
Denzel Curry - Ultimate
And the list goes on...
Mister G. STFU your momma nigga
Mister G. Rae Sremmurd did not blow up off a meme. Juice WRLD only blew up cause of Cole Bennett
Rae Sremmurd blew up before Black Beatles
Smoodie - exactly people overrate the meme culture. It plays a pivotal part but it also hurts artist careers.
Denzel Curry kinda fell off a lil bit after Ultimate though. He just happened to get lucky, he been doing this shi since 2010.
Juice , chance weren’t industry planners at all , but the kid Laroi kid .... he 100% has to be one. They pushed him and gave him streams period. Are industry plans gonna die?
What cardj said is what Billie said too. The fact that their music is popular doesn't mean they're not plants. That's the whole point of planting. To get them popular
why does it even matter if someone’s an industry plant like if they’re good they’re good I could honestly care less about there come up...

juice had crazy talent there was a video where he freestyled for HOURS. I just wish he didn't take those drugs
I remember when there were only a few thousand plays on lucid dreams and the two different covers but then just out of nowhere the song was huge
Reaction channels and memes are good for publicity nowadays
your definition of industry plant is extremely wrong. Someone like Britney spears is an industry plant, its when a record label picks a person and just spends money into making that person into a star.
Isaac younan nah, Britney Spears been in the industry for a long time. She was on Mickey Mouse Club as a kid (along with Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, etc) and then was signed to jive (*NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, etc). She was always going to be a pop star. Someone like Billie Eilish who went from a song on SoundCloud to having a number 1 album is a plant.

Listen to music that you enjoy. Fuck how popular it is, fuck how it sounds to other people. Fuck what other people think about the artist. Listen to your heart.
This remind me of when people claimed that every rapper was Illuminati lmao
Lmaoo fr
Some of them support that satanic shit. But most people don’t know wtf they talking about. 💀
1:56 Big smoke is that you?
Industry plants aren’t real lmao no one controls your taste in music. Only the listeners can determine if someone is gonna be successful or not.
Yes, but no. No one controls your taste in music, but I can guarantee you there's hundreds, if not thousands of people that release songs that you would love every week that you will never hear. What the music industry can do is decide which artists to promote, and by extension, who's song you're gonna listen to.
I feel like this video missed the whole point of the "industry plant" label. I always felt like industry plant refers to major label artists who don't write their own music, because say what you will about the other components of talent (performing, recording, etc) but at the end of the day if you didn't write the music, the music is not yours and the credit to your success really belongs to someone else. A lot of top 40 artists are really just models, not artists. Just a pretty face to slap on top of some music that was written and refined by a professional industry team.
The whole K-pop community
Cole Bennett had millions of followers which put juice wrld on then they showed their friends etc and Juices song “Lucid Dream” being a meme helped him become the success he is now
They really put zero effort in these thumbnails
I love how y'all fr not talking bout Jumex and only had a 1 second shot of Baby Goth. They some MAJOR plants and you tackling cases where artists were OBVIOUSLY not plants

Some people have streaming farms though. So it’s more than just manufacturing artists through their talents. It’s manufacturing an artist and creating fictional stats for them so it can seem like they organically blew up.
Jumex, Baby Goth?? Those are 2 for sure and they keep up popping everywhere even tho I never heard or searched them
"If the music resonates does it matter how they started?" Yup it does. The worst part of an industry plant is that the artist is being controlled by money. If u support an artist u can give them money but you shouldn't be able to buy them creativity, image and all. And mold it to trends just to gain wealth.
Shouldve put babygoth and jumex instead of juice and chance

Yes, you can. You can buy that. No they aren't. The public aren't deciding what's going on. The industry has real power, or it wouldn't exist.
I think there are industry plants but I wouldn’t consider anyone mentioned in this video as one
People don’t wanna acknowledge artists hard work and call them industry plants, Chance The Rapper has been rapping since middle school and Juice WRLD had connections with G Herbo and the NoLimit squad
Does it really matter if an artist is an industry plant if they still make good music?
Not for me. But this works is so stupid
Yes, because they deceived us from the beginning to make it to that point, and we're not cool with that. If you're making good music with industry help right off the bat, just be clear about it.
It makes it harder for up and coming talented artist that are putting in there money and there time to make music
People who work with industry plants often steal from underground artists that are trying to make a rise. Also many industry plants are abused, assaulted and raped. The reason why plants choose to stay is because they are owned by the record label and there is a chance of the general public turning on them.
I don’t understand how opportunities for new talented rappers who hop on a tune are labelled industry plants, chance ain’t an industry plants I’ve been listening to him for years

He blew up because of Cole Bennet, an industry plant is someone who pays for views or advertisements for their music
sugnuhC giB no an industry plant is someone who receives a massive push from higher ups and then suddenly their music is everywhere. U see it with chance. Just because someone has been making music for years doesn’t mean they can’t be a plant and juice is most likely a plant.
Metric of Sqad but juice put Lucid Dreams out a year before the video why would a label push someone’s song that’s been out for a year?
I've literally seen industry "artist" who never even made music then suddenly they make one album and they are famous over night the record labels know what attracts money and people they know how to pull us in and they can do it easy theyll have you come in already have instrumentals and lyrics written for you all you have to do is get on microphone and do what the producers tell you to do and they'll create the hits I got a lot more respect for the independent artist who put hard work into their music and create it all by their selfs
Genius is secretly the industry plant showing off all these bum “artists”

Who tf listens to billy eyelash
The "puppet master" narrative is essentially true. There are analysts at record labels who review a bunch of content and then select an artist to elevate and advertise. The billboard top 100 isn't a "free market." Artists who are on the billboard 100 aren't just there because their shit is good. You can only get on the top 100 if you have backing and advertising, connections with corporate owned networks, etc. If you know of anything on the top 100 that didn't have industry backers and promoters, please inform me.

I say the real problem with an industry plant is once people think that of them the music no longer comes across authentic. I don't want music resonating with me that the person singing/rapping had little to no part in. Not saying that the music can't be good or amazing for that matter. It takes away from it is all. Imagine your favorite band/rapper/singer.. Artist turned out to be an industry plant. Wouldn't sit well
