I saw Sonic Youth at First Avenue, back before they had the barrier before the stage. If you were in the pit, you as close as you could get without actually being on stage. I had a Sonic Youth t-shirt with "Kim Gordon's Love Slave" printed on the back. She noticed it during 'Cool Thing' and pointed at me! Great times!
I remember seeing an interview with Kim once and she said most people in a band want to be rockers, but they don't want to rock. Sonic Youth really rocked.
I don't like every Sonic Youth song but I'm always excited to hear one I've not heard before because you never know what they'll do. Without bands like Sonic Youth rock music would be so dull
Yeah thank god they didn't make that mistake again. It would be so boring hearing everyone play the same note at the same time, over and over, for ever and ever.
Kurt Pattyn : Me too. For years I tried to start a band project that combined my love of Sonic Youth and my love of Betty Page. It was to be called Sonic Betty. But I couldn't get anyone interested.
um. OK. I'm 59 years old. Stay with me on this before you flame at me (is that the correct term for angry internet responses?). Never heard of Sonic Youth. Stumbled on this video and of course saw Kim and of course wanted to check it out. This horrified me, except of course watching Kim perform. My first thought was it was a totally adlibbed performance to check the sound. Of maybe non of these people had actually met before. Then Kim started to scream at me. Singing I suppose. WTH is all this? And why all the people there to see this? They most know something I am missing. So I watched it again. Then again. I started to get it. I could hear how they were bringing it all together. Now I am searching out more Sonic songs. Final analysis, not for me, but excellent!!
@Peter Stransky, Google "no wave", New York, early, mid-1980s, Brian Eno. Follow how (some of) those bands have evolved from complete "deconstruction of music" to sophisticated innovative sounds, like DNA -> Ambitious Lovers -> Arto Lindsay. Sonic Youth sculpted their noise into more traditional song structures. Try "Shadow Of A Doubt" on their best album Evol. Or Tunic (Song For Karen)
To me art is an expression of one's feelings of life and the world around them. Sometimes those things can be ugly, but that doesn't make the art any less valid.
It’s totally overlooked - how much music from this era of “ugly rock” did so much for the leveling of the social playing field between men and women. This song and performance made me feel seen. Every woman should be free to express the disgust we feel from being objectified.... And men should support us in it. Long live Sonic Youth!
Kim, you are the sexiest woman I ever did know since I was a kid. I don’t mean to say it like I’m a creep, but seriously since I was in my teens in the late 80’s you are the punk rock goddess that never gets out of touch. Seriously, you are one of a kind, 😍

The funny thing about this band is, when they aren't trying so hard to be "alternative" and just make a song, their songs are brilliant. 80% of it is total trash though sadly. They could have been super stars.

@joe curtin - That Theoretical Girls track is nice. Very clean & precise with a rock n' roll/new-wave feel.

This song live is incredible. Kim Gordon is raw
Lady Lou Reed.
Would you rather her in cooked form?
The middle guitar solo piece is just as beautiful as Stairway to Heaven's.. if not more...
Legendary NYC post punk noise band playing a song about the happy California vibe..they almost get a little groovy thing going in there
Kim is so great in this song. I love when she dances
