Hey Pikasprey! A little late but I thought I'd say it anyway. It seems GameFreak WAS aware that trading between foreign copies of Pokemon would cause data corruption but they didn't actually set any flags within the game to prevent it! I was flipping through the manual for the original Pokemon Silver out of boredom (yes, I have a genuine copy, thanks to my roommate hording stuff and later giving it away). On the page that details the trading sequence, it specifically states, "Also, please do not attempt to trade or battle with a foreign version of Pokemon or your data will be corrupted." So they definitely knew of the game breaking bug but I guess they thought it would be next to impossible for foreign copies to interact. Then they stuck a note in the manual, hoping that would keep it from happening. Certainly not the first time that's happened and likely not the last. Rather interesting, don't you think?
thannk you for this info :)
Maybe the localization team noticed it after it was too late to fix the problem.
@@scienceviking4490 That's entirely possible. Or perhaps they thought it wasn't worth fixing.

Spend another 60 hours getting to near max level. Use the money gained from said 60 hours of training to get a high tier weapon. Then go to a different training spot, and for 10 hours straight grind to max level. But boy, you ain't done yet. That dope cape you got for getting max level? You can trim it. You can add an attractive trim to the edges. But you need to max out another skill for that trim. So start cooking those sharks because that is another 24 in game hours.

Speaking of softlocks that you can do after beating the Champion, I'd really like it if you talk about that famous one caused by the Meister's trade in Gen 4. He wants a Finneon for his Magikarp. You need a Finneon with Surf (the move is needed to reach him), no fishing rods (Finneon requires a Good Rod, so get your Finneon from another game), nothing else that can learn Surf, nothing that has Teleport or can learn Fly, no Rare Candies, and no Poké Balls. Do the trade, save your game, and now you've just trapped yourself on that island in Route 226.
It's a super obvious softlock and I'm personally still shocked that Game Freak let this slip through the cracks. You don't even need to get rid of your money or other items like practically every other softlock here.

I just love how mathematical your speech is. Every arguement you have could not be missing, and every arguement needed is mentioned
Here's what you missed out: Because time is RTC-based, there's a 32.768KHz crystal oscillator found in the cartridge. Just crack open the cartridge, desolder the crystal, and put a correct-voltage waveform that is much faster than 32.768KHz on the XTAL IN and you can skip day-by-day with just a series of pulses.
Yes, but again at that point you're having to use something outside the game to even make the game playable in the first place. Might as well get a cheating device to escape
I could... think of at least 27 separate ways in which to solve the problem with less hassle. At least buying a japanese copy of a game doesn't require me to open the game up. Buying game genie would be easier. Technically, booting the game up daily would be easier, it don't take much active time, only passive time. You could manually change the save data if you're opening up the cartridge anyway. You might even be able to trigger the walk through walls glitch, and that's only less good if you really really dislike a negligible chance for your character to turn female. The list goes on.

Who the hell looked at this feature where you have to hold 3 specific buttons on the title screen and then enter a specific unique password and thought
"You know what, this feature is too accessible, lets hide it behind two extra button presses"
It's most likely a dev feature that was left in the international releases for some reason, since it's not in the Japanese version at all
Ethan becomes a trans girl, isolates herself in the League with her trusty Caterpie friend and becomes a peaceful berry farmer, living out her life in comfort surrounded by familiar people in a beautiful land. Though she insists she is on her way to escape, she is happy.

@@hornetsilksong Glad to see people respecting trans pronouns here!
the trans rep we deserve!!
Why do you think the unchosen player in the remakes has a maril? Considering one in three male Azurils become female upon evolution?
how to make this slightly more cruel: make sure the caterpie is a shiny
You mean a LOT more cruel. Otherwise, nothing really stops one from just starting over.
Ouch...right in my shiny hunter heart...
Imagine being dedicated enough to get that berry every day for 239 days, only to boot it up on the 240th day and find that the internal battery has run dry.

I thought using the Japanese version seemed excessive when you were talking about trading...but then you brought up the secret code, and it all made sense!

Stay awesome, Pik. :3
I think it's because of the Barry's
@@ddsjgvk Oof. Imagine that. Once you'd have escaped the Crystal softlock situation, you'd have 240 fines over 1.000.000 pokedollars each.
Make sure the caterpie is shiny, so that they have a reason to try to save it. MWAHAHAHAH
melehu I think you will find a replacement shiny within the minimum of 240 days, if you restart right away. Also, if it’s shiny you still have to trade it, and as we saw, trading looks incredibly annoying.
"Also, if it's shiny you still have to trade it"
Why would you need to trade it?
At that point I wouldn't care anymore tbh.
MarioManTj so you would keep a shiny caterpie on a game without any good Pokémon, almost no money, and no items?
I'm asking for a reason why you would trade it, I never said anything about keeping it. Can you explain the situation in which you would need to trade it?
15:05 For this particular tree, we can pick an Ice Berry, which heals a Pokémon's burn.
Great job! Now I know what an Ice Berry does.

I've broken the lock. In generation 2 games you can duplicate Pokemon an unlimited number of times. Just give the berry to the Caterpie and give it the ice berry. Here's how you do the glitch, save in front of a PC, then deposit a Pokemon, click change box, when it says, "SAVING DON'T TURN OFF THE POWER", turn off the power. Turn the game back on and you have the Pokemon in your PC and the other in your party, both have the same held item. You can do this an infinite number of times, so really, you only need 1 ice berry.
@@Mr.Phresh can't deposit your only Pokemon to have an empty party though
@@ParkaPal oh wow! How dumb of me. That's very true. How could I have not realized that. Thank you for pointing out my mistake.

So, I believe that the reason as to why the Japanese releases of gen 2 don't have access to the clock reset function vs the international release is because Japan doesn't observe daylight savings time. It's not that the feature was removed, so to speak, but that it was added for the international release.
However, thinking about it further, the theory breaks down a bit because of the needed password that the average player just wouldn't know.
then again, you can change whether or not DST is active in your house in New Bark if I remember correctly.
Was looking for a comment like this, but not about Daylight Savings Time. You can activate that from your house.
Notably, though, Japan is also one timezone. It's possible you can activate the clock reset in the international release because many countries have more than one timezone, so if you move, you'd just be stuck with the game at a wildly different time.
Or it was just an oversight, who knows.
I was just thinking I needed another one of these

Have you seen modern mobile apps now these days?
Logging in to colect you're daily ice berry isn't as bad as it sounds.
Exactly my thoughts. If somenone is committed to that, he/she can probably push through with this too. It honestly just is turning your device on daily for a few minutes an then move on with life. You might have to walk to the shop clerk a few times to sell your max, but it is not really that bad.
Damn, beat me to it...
Welp, I mean yeah, but 8 months *without* fail?
@@Definitely_a_Foxwell it's not like failure forces you to restart, if you forget a day you just have to wait for 24 extra hours.
@@Definitely_a_Fox If you miss a day, the only consequence is that the schedule is just put back by one day. Whereas many mobile/social games have log-in bonuses that require you to enter for a number of consecutive days and reset that whole process if you miss one. So this soft-lock file is actually more *generous* in that sense.
10:05 Lol I remember coming home from vacation with a mareep (I was stoked) on my English version of Crystal.
The Mareep was called Voltilam since I traded it with a German version of the game.
Then a week later I read your files could be corrupted by trading with a different language.
It took me a month to realise my game wasn't gonna get corrupted anymore and now is jst smtn fun to remember since it's battery died XD
Mareep is wonderful.
