Jordi Savall is my music hero. Every note carries such feeling. Whatever he plays is beautiful and heartfelt. He truly is the master of the gamba as were M. De Ste. Colombe and Marin Marais in their day. How grateful I am that their music again sings through Savall’s heart and hands!
Saw Jordi live in Kilkenny, Ireland, some time ago. The viola de gamba in the hands of the maestro just captivated the audience and this solo performance recalls that wonderful night. What strange and unfathomable emotions are evoked by this wonderful music and by the viola de gamba.
I had the pleasure of having a conversation with Mr. Savall after a concert several years ago. His personality was just as beautiful and gentle as his music. Such an incredibly humble gentleman.

Cuando era un niño y comence a oir musica, me llego el resplador de personas que no eran ya de mi generacion,,pero influyeron en mi oido y mi amor a la musica. Casals, Segovia, la gran sanda landowska, la enorme marie claire Alain, J.P.Rampall, Sviatoslav Ritcher .Savall es de estos. Ha creado algo muy sólido.musicalmente con la musica antigua, nos la ha mostrado y nos ha hecho amarla. Gracias mil veces
También tuve el singular privilegio de escucharlo en vivo y conocerle, en un concierto que ofreció en mi cuidad, Medellín, el 12 de noviembre de 2019, con su espectáculo musical, basado en la banda sonora de film de Alain Corneau " Tous les matin du monde", la cual musicalizó admirablemente.. Un genio en todo el sentido de la palabra.. Y gran persona, ni se diga.
I love the playful sequencing of different pieces, composers, and even pizzacato in lieu of arco during the final Bach mvmt. Truly reminiscent of the creative Baroque era!
Such a hard instrument to master. Great respect to Jordi Savall! - when ever I loose faith in learning to play viola de gambe I go back listening to him.
I wouldn't say that it's hard to master, on the contrary, if you wish to play any string instrument and you have no background, the viol is very recommended, and I encourage anybody who wants to learn playing it!
Hi William, it’s a late reply but there are certain organisations that you can rent gamba from if you live in the US. I myself rented a bass gamba for one year which was way cheaper than buying one. If you contact with Viola da Gamba Society of America they might help you with more info.

I love so many of his recordings, but these unaccompanied solos are always my favorites. He shapes every phrase so beautifully.

I've been looking to take it up, but from what I've seen, violas da gamba are quite expensive (not surprising). Any suggestions on where to start?
