I was in French Guiana and up the Maroni River about 40 years ago. We were about 100 miles up the river setting up a gold mine on Beiman Creek. It was a great adventure.
Yes, in the jungle, everything grows very quickly, and indeed takes over everything. Nature doesn't have to wait for a long British-type winter to pass. The sun is overhead twice a year, and basically the only difference you encounter year round, is a dry season and a wet season.
Just gorgeous.Such a great vibe, beautifully filmed and edited, we were right there with you. Memories to last a lifetime, well deserved for you, and I was a very grateful phantom shipmate. Well done, and many, many thanks 🤗🤗
I'm at the point where I hit the 'like' button at the very start of the video. Amy and Matt, you produce consistently high-quality videos of your intrepid journey. Thanks so much for bringing the world to our homes 👍✌️🌏
3:15 Matt inadvertently did the exact wrong thing by pulling hard in his attempt to lift the fish in. For a fish that is too small to be gaffed, lift the fish in with the rod. The flexibility of the rod reduces the load on the fish's mouth and improves the chances that the hook remains in the fish.
Yeah, they've become very good. Dare say future career doing adventure story telling for a broader audience. Take out the sailing aspect and the dingy segment could easily stand on its own from the pacing, narration, shot compositions, editing, music, etc
It's great to see so many positive and upbeat responses to your latest video, just as it should be. Keep having fun guys and stay safe. At the rate you are moving you will be home before too long.. And what then? J&J
Sounds like a lot of hard work to us! Although a re-fit may be needed for Florence in the not too distant future! We enjoy sailing boats more than working on them, so building one sounds like a nightmare.
Not just the hard work but the time and money too .. i was a keen follower of RAN sailing but they are going to be bogged down for years and are now clearly struggling for money to fund the lavish project
@@andyjamesable You are so right, that is going to take years for RAN. Don't get me wrong I love building things , but RAN, Ruby Rose, MJ sailing, Distant Shores, Vagabond the list is endless. Even Cloudy Bay is awol
The drone footage is amazing guys....you don't really get to appreciate how vast the Amazon really is without it... Your right it must be so surreal taking a yacht up the heart of the great river, and then paddling side creeks, oh and who doesn't love inaccurate charts 😆 Congrats on another well made video 😉
Amazing jungle video part with beautiful sunsets and the sounds of nature. As I’ve said before, the two of you have THE BEST SAILING CHANNEL ON RUclips! Thank you
In Steve Callahan's book 'Adrift' he comes across a load of pollution in the middle of the Atlantic, old plastic drums, discarded fishing gear, wood and stuff and underneath was an whole ecosystem going on. Nature finds a way. Great video again ❤️
I did a read out loud of that book for my blind elementary students years ago. I came across one of the boys as a 32 year old man. And he stated to me that he still remembered Steve Callahan and the plight that he went through.
Besides the great filming, editing etc, as a old sea dog, I greatly admire your vessel prep and watch keeping discipline, not to mention your sailing skills. Carry on!
You two are the most impressive, brave and talented humans on RUclips. So impressed. Love watching your adventures. Thank you. Shannon and Scott Waring, Seal Beach, California.
Super episode guys, the filming and editing continue to be excellent. Great to see Matt's impression of David Attenborough with the whispering commentary! Stay safe and happy sailing. Happy new year to you both and look forward to more of your exploring in 2023.
Thank you for taking us along. I'm watching this on 30 January from northern Indiana. It's 54°f today, but last week we were down to a very windy 0°! Crazy weather here. Your travels are so wonder-filling, but a little bittersweet as you begin the last leg of your circumnavigation (#1?). I hope to tap some of your energies to get my 71 years out to the back yard to breath some new life into my sailboats (79 Catalina 22 & 91 MacGregor 19). We've got great inland lakes near by and Lake Michigan just 35 miles away. Best of all. I've got a great wife, like you Matt, to make the times complete! Stay safe!
This was a very entertaining video, im getting used to this kind of quality haha. Im spoiled by u guys! Have a great new year and ill be watching u! Bon Voyage!
Your trip on the Maroni river reminds me of the adventures of SV Damien ("Damien autour du monde") with Gérard Janichon and Jérôme Poncet, who sailed up the river in the 70's. Au great read. And your episodes are always a joy to watch. Thanks !
HAPPY NEW YEAR TOO YOU. oohh wow , super jealous of you right now. What a wonderful experiance to be able to take your house and travel up the Amazon , all those unusual sights and sounds. What a trip you will have , enjoy and THANK YOU for bringing us with you. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.
Hi Matt and Amy, its good to see you again. Amazing to see you, at least for me, for the first time sailing on the merky waters of a river in the middle of the jungle. Beautiful and unusual views from what is actually one end of the Amazon rain forest by Surinam in South America. The sunken ship turned into an island is a trip altogether, very unique though. This video looks to me pretty much like a Nat Geo expedition, forgive me for the comparison. Florence I wish you the best for the upcoming in that area of the globe. You have a safe trip to Trinidad which I guess it would be the closest you will get to where I live in the country of Colombia. Bear hugs. Love you guys. rgs ⛵🛶🌎😎
@Sailing Yacht Florence very cool the way you highlighted how much a River Delta’s channel can change over time! Love that your chart plotter appear to show you land-sailing or off-roading rather than sailing up a river. That’s gotta blow some minds for the non-sailing crowd that watch your channel! Great episode, thanks.
This was an amazing episode. To be able to go up the Amazon river even if it was for a little tiny bit was awesome. Good luck with the passage to the Caribbean.
Hugely informative! Thanks! 5 Euro for a pineapple!?! Wow. The steel ship you were on likely split because it was rivetted and not welded. And the steel was likely Corten that's why it didn't rust through. I can't wait to see how you got that Marlin in the boat on your next episode!
French guyana is my heart country as i happily and safely lived there for a while. No animals can be seen because the amazon forest is so big and deep, they just don't bother hangin around with humans ;-). Thank you for this very nice sweet episode, beautifull lights , loved the sunrise lights and the river. have a happy new year, wherever youll be
Happy New year matt, Amy your adventure has been such a joy to watch everytime I tune in, you explanation on ware you have been has been fantastic learning you guys have a great jury, be safe for 2023 look forward to seeing more of you both everyone watching are having fun 👌🏾
This episode prompts me to suggest yall consider going to mobile alabama and taking the tenn tom waterway up to the Tennessee river and enjoy some of the nature and communities most dont see. Just an idea.
Another extraordinary episode! Awesome music choice @ 12:48 for the paddle up the river with some easy straight editing cuts = DRAMA! And the 360° camera pays off big time with the mangroves, hanging vines, & tree limbs. Curious though... what is Florence's draft and compared to the depth of the river , were you ever close to running aground? Really nIce decision to edit the sound of lapping water instead of the engine noise @ 20:28. Thanks for the entertainment. You guys are the BEST!
Florence draws 1.7m, the river is mostly 10+m deep (surprisingly) but there were lots of sections where it was down to 3m briefly, we stopped once it got down to 2.5m and then went exploring in the dinghy.
Interesting episode! Getting close to the end here, and I simultaneously want to see what’s next and yet don’t want it to end. Although, it’s not like a World Trip means you can never sail again, so I’d love to see more adventures after this one. Cheers, -J
Another interesting adventure shared. Thank you both.❤ Florence sure looked classy with her beautiful, color coordinated 💙🤍 spinnaker leading the way. That fish dinner made my tummy growl. I kid you not. Cheers mates and HAPPY NEW YEAR! 🍾🥂2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣3️⃣
Love river sailing (done a few in Panama). An unexpected bonus (of being in fresh water) is that all the growth on the boat (seaweed, clams etc) drop off after a few weeks. Better than diving on the bottom!
Finding your way through the forest on a river meander that you've never been on would be daunting enough in Europe, let alone a place where help would be hard to come by...😳 A great video that gives us a glimpse of what we could be doing with our lives...👍
Great episode! My wife and I have sailed the coast of Alaska for 15+ years. One of the things we look for to detect semi submerged logs are what we call in Alaska "Jesus Birds" these are birds that look like they are walking on water. 🙂 They alert us that there is a submerged log under them they are standing on. Do you realistically think you will be able to give up the sailing life after you finish your circumnavigation? I don't.. 🙂 Do you have a plan for once that is accomplished? Thanks for the video. Looking forward to the next one. Fair winds and following seas. Sail On!
We receive lots of 'what next questions', we ask ourselves the same, so once we reach the Caribbean with the video we will make a future plans episode to answer the questions.
Now that was a cool adventure. Beautiful. We went up jungle rivers in Panama and the San Blas. Wanted to do the Orinoco river in Venezuela but to much violence reported so we passed. I love river adventures. Sorry you didn’t see more wildlife. Maybe a local guide would have helped. We found that at dusk the crocks and more started appearing in such numbers that it was scary in our little dingy. PS enjoy Trinidad and Tobago. We loved it there. Spent hurricane season there. Much culture ❤there. The diving in Tobago is tops!
Terrific I will be very sad when your trip is over as I have now watched all your programmes and they are some of the best sailing adventures on youtube. Very best wishes to you both as we head into the new year from Ian in South Canterbury New Zealand

I was in French Guiana and up the Maroni River about 40 years ago. We were about 100 miles up the river setting up a gold mine on Beiman Creek. It was a great adventure.
maybe that's part of the reason for the lack of wildlife downstream

EPIC!!! Great choice of music too and that boat turning into a jungle island was something else...
A sailing Chanel that’s still just sailing and enjoying it instead of all the other nonsense , great episode keep it up!
We so appreciate your journey, your relationship and wonderful story you are telling with your lives. Thankyou!
Once again a great musical accompaniment to this video. Keep em coming Matt &Amy. I speak for everyone when I say you are both doing a great job.
Yet another superb episode. Places that most of us will never visit. Thank you so much for crafting this episode. From Devon in the UK
Your cinematography and editing is outstanding, well done!
Yeah, they've become very good. Dare say future career doing adventure story telling for a broader audience.
Take out the sailing aspect and the dingy segment could easily stand on its own from the pacing, narration, shot compositions, editing, music, etc
I couldn't agree more. I've been watching from the beginning and they have improved greatly. Look forward to the new release every other week.
A two month old comment on a one month old video .
Your shooting and editing just keeps getting better and better.
This part rinsed me of Papillon, book & movie. Actually met the man in central coast of Venezuela when he was about 70.
Typo, meant "reminded" me of Papillon. Recommend the book. Interesting man..
It's great to see so many positive and upbeat responses to your latest video, just as it should be. Keep having fun guys and stay safe. At the rate you are moving you will be home before too long.. And what then? J&J
We'll have to make a 'future plans' video to share our thoughts on what comes next but home is still a long way away.
Amazing to see how the jungle is powerful over a wreck ship.
This is by far one of my favorite RUclips sailing/travel channels! My only complaint is that they are to short! :) Good travels.
What a beautiful filmed video. Thank you for taking us along on your adventures!
So glad you two are still sailing.... It seems all the other sailing channels are building boats currently!! :-)
