In terms of fun factor, curious what you think about this vs an M240i xdrive. They seem to be very similar in weight despite the 2 being a "smaller" car. Maybe the loss in practicality is not worth it for the additional fun that car can offer if they are so similar.

I love the colour combination, it’s fantastic! It’s a shame they’ve taken away the physical 1-8 shortcut buttons on the centre console, as these would be handy to save things like the heated seat controls
I’ve used the short cut buttons literally everyday on my G21 and although my next purchase is still two years ahead from now, I’m already struggling with the imagination that those buttons will be gone for good 😵💫
I work for BMW and couldn't agree more, brilliant all round package, but the main problem with the latest models is the lack of buttons, and in most of them, completley missing an iDrive controller! This was a massive selling point which I pointed out to customers and unfortunately will no longer be the case for the majority of new models.
Are they going to introduce these in X6 too ?🤔 i am assuming they would but love the current infotainment and instrument cluster of X6. I like these as well, but for X6, I would prefer their current setup.

All of the car manufacturers are putting to much unneeded crap in cars now. All of the cars I’ve owned and sold I didn’t even use half of the electronics in it … But the car I got delivered to me last March is the perfect car , no bells and whistles just a plain bad ass simple car inside a 2022 Jaguar F TYPE P450 .
I've had my pre-facelift 340i for over 2 months now, was going to get the LCI but the physical buttons on the pre-facelift swung it for me. It isn't just the climate buttons, the memory buttons are incredibly handy.
I totally agree with you about the physical buttons. I test drove the 2022 BMW M340i and it's just much simpler to press a button to heated seats versus searching the climate settings. My fear is that BMW can simply one day just flick a switch and BOOM now, the features you want are gone and are now subscription based. I told the sales person if I can't even heat my butt quickly on a cold day, we have a major problem. More tech = more problems = more money to fix
BMW has been getting a lot of flak for the styling of its cars in recent years, but I'll go against the grain and say the M340i is a seriously good looking car, both in saloon and estates versions. That said, I do agree that BMW should've retained the tactile buttons for the climate control & other most frequently used functions.
The thing that I hate about removing the gear stick is that you can't just push it to the side and use it to shift +/- gear at all. I like using that as the paddles goes around with the steering and not column mounted
Having moved from a pre facelift to an LCI. I actually find the aircontrols better. More eye level than before and resting my wrist on the ledge in front of the screen better than hovering over a little button further down.
I’ve had this for about a month now and absolutely love getting in it and driving it everyday 😊 i find myself finding excuses to go places just so i can drive it. Highly recommend!
Owned my M340d LCI for a couple of weeks now. Love it! Personally I think the screens make anything else now look dated, missing buttons not a concern as voice is better and you just ask! You still have the control wheel, the screens are lovely and big, personally I think they have done well and I couldn’t go back now. This is coming from the 2021 G20 pre LCI and I have to say, this new version is my preference without a doubt. All personal opinion of course.
First of all congrats on your new M340d 🎉 Bet its a blast to drive on the highways. Overtaking with so much torque is a godsent experience… You have no idea how much I wanted to get me a powerdiesel like the M340d 😢 Thing is diesel is so expensive nowadays here in the Netherlands. Got the i instead. Its amazing, but I would get a powerdiesel anytime over a petrol powered car if fuel wasnt as pricey as it is. How is the sound in the LCI? Do you notice much sound over the speakers?
I've just posted a comment about I've been waiting over 1 year for a M135i to be delivered. Yeah ill have a brand new car when it arrives but will have an out of date idrive system! Its funny because the M135i was one of the first BMW's to have major changes but yet it seems to be one of the last ones to be getting the new idrive 8 system?
Is it weird to say that one of my favorite parts of the newer bmws is the the quality of the taillight LEDs? I think I noticed it first on the more recent x3 models but the smoothness of the illuminated portions of it are quite appealing to me for some reason. It almost gives off a frosted look with zero break or even like a neon light look.
Shift idrive dial forward to allow for setting up some shortcuts. Will need to set those up for sound controls and other commonly used options once you've had it for a month or so.
I think one thing to mention about this car (the reason i'm getting one), is how little the price has been affected by the chip shortage / used car prices. I currently have a 2020 A-Class, I paid £23k for it brand new in 2020 and I can sell it for £26k today, with 30k miles on the clock... they have gone up almost 40%, whereas I can pick up a 2022 M340i with under 10k miles for around £40k... that's only £14k more than a 163bhp FWD A-Class which is insane. They have barely been affected, so I think picking up a slightly used one in the current market is fantastic, as when things come back down eventually, the M340i won't lose much, if any value at all.
I prefer a combination of screens and practical buttons with a minimalist feel. But I don’t like the way the new screens are designed and fitted, it looks like they are retrofitted. The previous generation was perfect for me, the screens were modern but still integrated with the dash and looked like they were built into the car, not fitted afterwards. I have the same problem with the previous gen mercs.
Great video Joe! You seem to be the only on RUclips that showed the new screens from angles that we needed to see. Your points are very good as well on the interior.
The sky scraper metallic on red interior is my favorite combo. I originally ordered an m340 in that color combo but went to a brooklyn grey m240 at the last second! cant go wrong w m-lite bmw
The reason I love my 2019 Mini Clubman, apart from the driving characteristics, is the fact that there are decent buttons and dials for primary functions. The obsession with touchscreens is a concern. Mazda are one of the few manufacturers that seem to agree.
Cheers for this Joe. I would love a G21 M340i but just too much money for me. I'll be sticking with my F31 340i for the time being but maybe in a couple of years time...
Aside from the ID8 touchscreens, the gear selector is another annoyance of the LCI model. Not as intuitive to use when quickly changing between D/R. I've become very used to popping it into S mode by flicking it to side when slowing down to engine brake, not even looking at where the selector is. Now, the new selector requires me to kind of look for it whilst driving. They've also cheapened the interior ever so slightly in places that are a bit hidden. And gone are swivelling adaptive lights, too.
@@hovnojede010101 they really are. I do find some of the nit picking a bit much. Usually happens when a face lift comes out. The lights are superb at night dancing around the road every bit as much as the old lasers. The only issue I can find over the preface lift is a little buggyness with the spotify connection, but I suspect updates will iron those out.
That's pricey. My 2019 440i Gran Coupe, almost fully optioned, was listed at £55k. I bought it from BMW with 3k miles and 10 months old for £31k. Struggling to understand how this 340i is now £63k new.
I know it's been talked about before, however, since you've been driving the M3 quite a lot, a comparison to how the steering and the steering feel would have been great.
Some reviewers have been a bit critical of the steering feel but I have no problem with this issue on my 2019 G20 330i M Sport. In fact I wonder what they are on about.
@@davidperry3531 I wonder as well. I have a 2022 M340i RWD model and once I put it into Sport, the steering feels meatier and feels very confident to me.
BMW want you to use the voice control more, you can use it for nearly everything. I use it for the heating control, heated seats even changing the interior lighting colour. I would still like the physical buttons as well, nice to have the option.
Idk.. on a Merc the dual led screens appear okay. But for some reason the more sport oriented BMW I feel deserves to retain the normal gauges. They’re basically like two iPads with BMW proprietary software so idk but it just feels so detached for what it’s supposed to be especially as he says about the analog buttons also. Otherwise nice interior.
Like Joe, not a fan of over -reliance on touchscreens, purely from a safety perspective. Plus I have long legs so with the seat back it’s a pain to reach forward. Personally,I think BMW are over-subtly trying to wean us onto using voice commands.
The Individual Piano Black is more durable than regular black trim I guess . I was concerned about it as well, but in min G05 after 3 years and 40k km still looks very good, not scratched at all, but I applied hardened wax on it, just so it cleans better. But totally recommended. Only downside is that nowadays they put those plastic black everywhere. Cheers!
My 330i touring with the sport plus pack listed at 45k 5 years ago - there's not really any options here that aren't on mine. It just shows how much BMW are ramping the prices up to make a killing - similarly nearly 100k for an M3, which is just a sexed up 3 series again shows the greed @ BeeEmm these days. All they do is force people to buy on finance to hide the massive prices they are now charging. The 340 is a nice motor, but come on BMW with the pricing ! Nice Vid Joe 👍
I think I got lucky. I got my pre LCI at the end of 2020 so it is in fact the 2021 model with the mild hybrid system. Before that I had an M140i and I agree that the brakes on the 340i with mild hybrid system are quite grabby, you can't really stop super smoothly, there's always a little jerkiness right at the stop point. As for the MPG I did Manchester to Guildford and back in a day around 400ish miles and got 50MPG out of mine. NO WAY I would have got close to that in my old M140i so the M340i with mild hybrid is a perfect all rounder!
I had my 68 plate 335d in the other day for the EGR recall and got a virtually brand new 320i as a courtesy car.Had a gear stick, electronic handbrake which were fine. But i did find the brakes quite grabby.Didn't like the dash.As joe says, maybe too many techy things.Getting into scary prices now, which is a shame.
@@francisbegbie591 Definitely agree with the prices! If I was to get mine again now. I would have to put down £7k deposit (I put £900 down on mine) and then I'd still have to pay £200 more a month than I currently do 🤯.
Spot on comment. I bought a 2022 pre LCI as I didn't like the new screens but dear me the brakes are rubbish. Couldn't believe it was me suddenly turning into a bad driver after almost 50 years at it! I now keep having to apologise to my wife every time we pull up as she does the lurch forward in the passenger seat! I have found it brakes a lot smoother in sport than comfort though but still not as smooth as you would want.
Beautiful car but BMW is pushing out the middle class from purchasing even a 3 series. Here in the states you’re looking at around $900 yes $900 for a m340i. Want a regular 330? That’s $700+ a month. And BMW, don’t blame it on the chip “shortage” because you had record breaking sales numbers.
Just to add if you specify the M Sport Seats the Comfort+ pack is automatically optioned to give the lumbar & electric memory functionality. The total being £3K.
Not sure if pre lci was similar but the little storage for wallet's and keys to the right if the steering wheel is gone. Why? Sound controls need to be accessible and not buried in the menu panel.
I have just sold my M340i touring and I bought it at a good price, with a lot of options and hardly lost any money on it . But couldn't warrant a new one. They are a lot more expensive now ! Especially with fuel prices now . Gone for something more fuel efficient now
Totally agree about buttons and the idrive being better whilst driving. Still, if you are in the car on your own you can say: Hey slave, turn on the seat heating.
they took away the manual shift gate so it's functionally less than before, BMW was the last to have the manual shift gate on the center console so you could shift while turning which you can't do with the paddles. Looks like you have to get an M car now if you want to shift with the console shifter. Like you said, it's an odd move for a petrol car to do this but I guess in line with what competitors like Audi have been doing for awhile now. I like the larger dual displays as it makes apple car play bigger and brighter, though maybe you have to reach futrher for some touch screen controls. Also the HVAC is always at the bottom so easier to reach over and turn on sync mode vs the old way.
I just picked mine up yesterday in Dravit Grey over Oyster. Your M3 videos pushed me over the edge on the color. I like the idrive 8 so far. I can’t agree with the touring being better looking, more practical for sure, but I wouldn’t call them attractive. Thanks for making all the good videos!
A couple of very good points in my view. Using buttons or knobs to change settings while on the move is a safety issue. There is far less time with the eyes off the road using them than having to look at the screen as you cycle through all the settings to get tot he simple one you want. The other is the gear shift lever. Your simple move to shift the lever and your finger slipped is indicative of a problem that a lot of people will experience. I am not a fan of run flat tyres and the first thing I would do is buy a set of normal tyres and wheels.
The best thing about this LCI G20 is hopefully the better "original" ones will drop a bit in price. M340i already well below £40k with reasonable mileage, once they hit £35k I'll be biting.
Interesting comment about the brakes. I have a 22 plate Touring with MHT tech and the brakes are just horrible. I thought it may be a fualt with my car but now that you have mentioned the same thing I am experiencing I guess it must be the regen on the mild hybrid tech thats affecting it. My previous car was a 335d Touring which had 370mm discs, my current M340i Touring only has 348mm front discs with the fancy red calipers. There is a BMW factory track pack 370mm drilled/grooved disc and caliper upgrade which can be fitted so I am considering putting these on.
100% there’s an inconsistent in the brakes with any BMW that has the mild hybrid tech. I noticed it first in a 520d I had and it was actually very annoying
Dad’s new U11 X1 arrives in a few weeks hopefully so we’ll see how the new screens/controls stand up compared to his G01 X3. I fully expect a few remote support telephone calls in the coming months. Both cars have Mocha Leather too 👌
The fact that the gearshift has disappeared does not cut costs. It is one of the elements of the future that awaits us. Electronic systems replace everything step by step. At some point, they will also replace the steering wheel, which will disappear whether we want it or not. It's just a matter of time. A few dinos like us will complain, but most will quickly accept this fact ... because there will be more space inside, it will also be safer etc. It is also about browsing advertisements (tiktok / insta / YT) and shopping while driving. Unfortunately, the decisions have already been made some time ago and the work is going full steam ahead whether we like it or not. All large concerns are working on autonomous cars, and practically all of them cooperate in this area.
So glad I ordered my G20 330d when I did, would have been gutted if I'd waited to have that horrible screen and that new gear selecter and having to choose a different engine. Not to mention BMW's pricing and apr rates going through the roof.
Gear selector is ridiculous. That screen though modern is not something that impresses me. Aren't we spending enough time in front is screens? lol. The car is certainly great though.
@@nab5018 Absolutely, I can switch lever into sport without looking, I don't want to go ferretting for a silly tab button. Not a fan of the screen as Joe says it's fiddly to do heating controls with a touchscreen.

13:13 - yeah, and as soon as you put in in Drive, the right rear exhaust flap closes. I own this car and I hear the same closing sound here. Why it's only open in Parking and Reverse? WTF BMW xD + you have to use Iconic Sounds: ON all the time. Otherwise exhaust flap does not even open at all. WTF_2 ??
personally, i think the pre lci m340 just has a more elegant look to the front bumper. This version of the bumper just looks too much like a Toyota Corolla, not a big fan of this grill.
Excellent as always Joe. I bought my M340i in Dec 2020 and it was manufactured in November. Yes mine has the mild hybrid. Love it and cant think of anything else when the lease is up in two years.... other than the touring version
voice control is good - this point needs emphasising - so one does not need to fiddle very much with buttons - in my opinion touch screen not a problem at all and one has the control wheel too. The mild hybrid makes gear changes instant and seamless. The old gear stick was ugly and one does not need it with the superb auto and one can use paddles. The new shifter is in fact very easy to use - it takes only a few drives to forget about the old stick shift. The mild hybrid makes a big difference. The G20 LCI is a big step up for this car. It is quieter, provides more urgent responses and is a very classy upgrade. Last I think the run flat point is exaggerated. Punctures out in the wild? No thanks. Buttons for radio and for demister etc still there - one can add what else one wants to the shortcuts. It is much more practicable than you say
The lack of buttons is splitting opinions. I thought about it before ordering an LCI. I came to the conclusion that I haven't had buttons on my phone for years so go with it.
@@biddyboy1570 well said, seems like that's a lot of cars reviewed online. I hear the same from the MK8 GTI infotainment, gets crucified in reviews but owners say it's tolerable. No car is perfect, a GTI/M340i have so many other positives to me, I can live with certain things

A bit of changes here and there that might not appeal to everyone. Me personally think this LCI has too much apparent cost-saving going on especially when they increase the starting price for all their models by a lot for 2023 in US.

Hey Joe! I am sure there a lot (or maybe the most) people out there who prefer the look of the saloon/sedan! Its totally fine to mention your personal opinion but you should declare it as your opinion 😉
Coming from a BMW E60 owner, is it really an issue for these latest vehicles not to have old style of having too much hard buttons for various in car controls? I do not own these latest cars but I've been in some of them a lot and I appreciate their voice commands especially while driving. That hey BMW would always do as I command and I've never been disappointed. Let's not be afraid of change, today I don't hear people asking why did cellphones become a touch screen and huge than before. Maybe my comment is irrelevant, but let's not get way ahead of ourselves. BMW has been getting a lot of flak for the styling of its cars in recent years, but I'll go against the grain and say the M340i is a seriously good looking car, both in saloon and estates versions. That said, I do agree that BMW should've retained the tactile buttons for the climate control & other most frequently used functions.
Havent heard any bad about the 3 series styling of the G20 just the M3 and M4 models. M340i is an undeniably good looking sedan.
The thing that I hate about removing the gear stick is that you can't just push it to the side and use it to shift +/- gear at all. I like using that as the paddles goes around with the steering and not column mounted
If you pull the toggle back into D, it will go into M/S mode. Essentially the same resulting as flicking the gear stick to the side.
@@alinsarhos3230 it will go into M/S, but then how to shift gear up and down with the tiny tab, like this? 😅 ruclips.net/video/CM76f7nChSU/видео.html
I think he means actually using the lever to go up and down the gears which this version doesn’t look like it allows you to do that anymore.
I only got that after the second comment . I rarely used the gear lever itself. Mostly the paddles.

Same, crazy that I have amg gt r fully specd n I enjoy driving my 23 m340i more
how about a year later now? do you still love to drive it every day? any issues?
@@usaf2011 still my daily, zero issues, absolutely love it.
First of all congrats on your new M340d 🎉
Bet its a blast to drive on the highways. Overtaking with so much torque is a godsent experience…
You have no idea how much I wanted to get me a powerdiesel like the M340d 😢
Thing is diesel is so expensive nowadays here in the Netherlands.
Got the i instead. Its amazing, but I would get a powerdiesel anytime over a petrol powered car if fuel wasnt as pricey as it is.
How is the sound in the LCI? Do you notice much sound over the speakers?
I hated the screen when I first saw it but now the more videos I watch the more it grows on me🤣🤣🤣🤣
What color combo do you have?
I've just posted a comment about I've been waiting over 1 year for a M135i to be delivered. Yeah ill have a brand new car when it arrives but will have an out of date idrive system! Its funny because the M135i was one of the first BMW's to have major changes but yet it seems to be one of the last ones to be getting the new idrive 8 system?
Agreed, so dissapointed with the 8series lci. The screrns make everything else seem outdated
This exactly! I find the taillights of the G30 LCI amazing to look at. Definitely the best of all BMW's at the moment!
@@denziokruize9059 thank you for keeping me sane lol. I feel like it’s a small detail but does so much for the design
Agree 100% about the screens. This new model looks terrible.
By far the best in its class. LCI model improved ever so slightly but as an all round package it’s so much more impressive
New lights are matrix led… leagues ahead of the old tech swivelling lights
Interesting on the G20 LCI Alpina B3 they kept the old gear selector design...
That road when dry (and quiet) is phenomenal and a real test for a chassis / damping!
Ideally in a slightly smaller car next time Joe 😀
@@philmountain9290 they're really not
@@hovnojede010101 they really are. I do find some of the nit picking a bit much. Usually happens when a face lift comes out. The lights are superb at night dancing around the road every bit as much as the old lasers. The only issue I can find over the preface lift is a little buggyness with the spotify connection, but I suspect updates will iron those out.
Totally agree with you about the touch screens and lack of a gear selector lever.
You know winter is coming when Joe starts rocking the red and blue puffer!
Hey Joe...awesome review but honestly, what would you choose between M340i and that torque monster 340d? Best regards, Mike.
the previous interior looked sexier, less screens please
That's pricey. My 2019 440i Gran Coupe, almost fully optioned, was listed at £55k. I bought it from BMW with 3k miles and 10 months old for £31k. Struggling to understand how this 340i is now £63k new.
Awesome vid Joe!. Can’t wait for the lci m340d touring
Cheers Matt!
How do you knock the gear box in to the more responsive setting with the new gear selector?
By the time my BMW M135i arrives I will have a brand new car yet with an out of date idrive system! Waited over 1 year for it now! 🤯
Joe, always delivering with the BMW content 🔥

I agree on the buttons definitely. Shame what the companies are doing with screens to save cost
Hey Joe, the touring in the video is my new motor waiting for collection.
Trading in my M340d for the LCi.

Thanks for taking us on todays ride...
they took away the manual shift gate so it's functionally less than before, BMW was the last to have the manual shift gate on the center console so you could shift while turning which you can't do with the paddles.
The BMW m340i LCI kinda makes you wonder if the M3 is really necessary.
👍 Joe I could not agree more with your opinion on buttons and screens 👌
How many physical buttons did you press to make that comment. Be honest.

Daytime lights look like the 2014 E class , interior screen clearly inspired by Mercedes style
Had m340i for two years best all rounded car Ive driven hands down. Will be getting an Lci V soon 😅
100% there’s an inconsistent in the brakes with any BMW that has the mild hybrid tech. I noticed it first in a 520d I had and it was actually very annoying
Can’t wait to turn in my 2020 3series for this monster! I want it in YAS marina blue 🥶🔥
Dad’s new U11 X1 arrives in a few weeks hopefully so we’ll see how the new screens/controls stand up compared to his G01 X3. I fully expect a few remote support telephone calls in the coming months. Both cars have Mocha Leather too 👌
Where is this on the BMW configuration tool? Can only find 330 or M models!
Hope the lower front grille is easily removeable to get all the leaves out!
Yes Joe brilliant review. WTF the screen. RIP dials and analogue
@@smilly9 I totally understand and wouldn't bother with the LCI for it's too much unnecessary fiddly technology just for the sake of going in every other car manufacturer's direction
What’s the difference between operating a mobile phone to a touch screen! Both takes your eyes off the road! Excellent reviews 😀
I’m glad I have idrive 7. The new screens would put me off ordering another BMW.
WTF_2 ??
Thanks Joe! Love the M340i 👍
personally, i think the pre lci m340 just has a more elegant look to the front bumper. This version of the bumper just looks too much like a Toyota Corolla, not a big fan of this grill.
Great review Joe! On my bucket list after I get my bmw 335d m sport xdrive touring in about 5 years 😁
Excellent as always Joe. I bought my M340i in Dec 2020 and it was manufactured in November. Yes mine has the mild hybrid. Love it and cant think of anything else when the lease is up in two years.... other than the touring version
Does anyone know which color is that?
voice control is good - this point needs emphasising - so one does not need to fiddle very much with buttons - in my opinion touch screen not a problem at all and one has the control wheel too.

The LCI has also lost the adaptive suspension button/option. Sport & Comfort still available individually.
My GOD, you were so negative reviewing this M340i which is the only bread and butter of BMW. Its a perfect car for everyone to drive everyday. It has a mighty B58 engine which has more than enough speed for any roads around the world. M3 its just for people who likes to show off.

Thank you Joe for this in-depth video. I'm still waiting on the electric G80 i3. Can't wait to see an electric 3 Series for the European market. Not everyone wants a iX3 nor do we want the i4 with the ridiculous front-end.

Good fun watching you driving over Ranmore Common near Dorking Joe. A good road for a blast in dry weather
The buttress holding the screen to the dash is hideous. Great review though.
A bit of changes here and there that might not appeal to everyone. Me personally think this LCI has too much apparent cost-saving going on especially when they increase the starting price for all their models by a lot for 2023 in US.

Way better looking than the the current G20 and makes the M3/M4 Beaver face look even more uglier now. Why are all manufacturers tunnel visioned when it comes to touch screens. A physical button system for the HVAC is just easier and better to use. If it ain't broke...

Hey Joe! I am sure there a lot (or maybe the most) people out there who prefer the look of the saloon/sedan! Its totally fine to mention your personal opinion but you should declare it as your opinion 😉
This what the M3 should look like.
Now I like it. Now it looks more like the 5 series
This car is stunning would take this over a c63 and S4
Coming from a BMW E60 owner, is it really an issue for these latest vehicles not to have old style of having too much hard buttons for various in car controls? I do not own these latest cars but I've been in some of them a lot and I appreciate their voice commands especially while driving. That hey BMW would always do as I command and I've never been disappointed. Let's not be afraid of change, today I don't hear people asking why did cellphones become a touch screen and huge than before. Maybe my comment is irrelevant, but let's not get way ahead of ourselves. If you like old things why not stick with old things and leave the new for those that appreciate them?
Old post. I know. I do like your reviews. Thanks for these! I am curious do you prefer the current model M340I or the current M550xi? Thanks!

Tyre reviews just did an interesting comparison on run flat tyres and showed that there is pretty much no difference at all. That could be specific to certain tyres though.
