  • Some bravely look over the edge, to miniature Sun-bound automobiles hundreds of feet below. Some gaze upward and feel themselves infinitesimal under lofty peaks. Yet, others pay attention to nearer vibrancy-a flowering high garden among glaciated mountainscape.
    If anybody ever needed justification to visit the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem" that is Glacier National Park, the Highline Trail would be easy persuasion. Connecting Logan Pass and Granite Park Chalet in 7.6 miles, it transports hikers through nonstop precipitous ledges and cliffs. Near halfway, the spacious pass adjacent picturesque Haystack Butte suffices as prime lunch rest.
    There is no spot untouched majestically. Those vistas-down, up, every which way-reveals the finest traces of one-time glaciation. Formerly numerous, there are now merely two dozen icy masses tracked by the park. Highline Trail users can even attempt a strenuous jaunt reaching an overlook of Grinnell, Salamander, and Gem Glaciers, and the geographical wonder that is the Continental Divide.

    Route: Highline Trail-Garden Wall Trail
    Type: Point-To-Point
    Distance: 9.4 mi.
    Elevation Gain: 1,586 ft.
    Location: Glacier National Park, Montana, USA

    My Thoughts:
    The drive up "Going-to-the-Sun" had already enthralled my senses. Still, I mentally prepped myself, as though having been honorably invited into a secret space. I started visualizing colorful shades blooming at my feet; I imagined being wonderstruck of massive peaks.
    My suppositions turned true-some unknown steward had ensured a special excursion for this guest. Inspiring sights appeared in abundance. Dazzling wildflowers generously decorated my route. Narrow ledges peppered spiciness into my casual stroll.
    There WAS one serious hiccup. "Had my host planned this test?" I pondered while inching upward to the Grinnell Glacier Overlook. My second time (on video, now)-vastly contrasting to the clear sky, dry ascent prior. I stood upon the frozen Divide eventually and reported the ordeal to inquisitive attendees. "Every rose has its thorn," a convenient cliche I quietly reflected afterward.

      You're welcome. It was entirely unexpected. I had cloudless, dry conditions during my initial hike.
      If you'd watched with the subtitles on they'd enhance the segment because I clarified further what was happening.

      @@TheOutboundMind pretty awesome stuff. Also highly recommend the UPK to boulder to hole in the wall to brown pass section, in terms of stunning scenery that is right up there with the highline trail/garden wall. Also, might be cool to add chapters for such a long video, so people can jump to certain sights if they want

      @@henrydyke552 "Video chapters" as a feature is not compatible with this channel. That's essentially promoting skipping to certain parts or the highlights, while my videos are meant to reproduce the hiking experiences in totality. Furthermore, shorter, highlight videos of many places I've visited are readily available on RUclips.
      The "Great Northern Traverse" is 59 miles with 96 road miles afterward; Kintla Lake-Bowman Lake is 35 miles with 20 road miles. Both are intriguing and include the section you've referenced.

      @@TheOutboundMind yes both are backcountry permit only which is a little bit of logistics, but both are stunning and both lack good exposure/content like yours because of how remote they are. But, they are both crown jewels of the NPS backcountry system, alongside "the North Circle" in Glacier also

    The Outbound Mind??? More like the Outta Yer Mind. LOL Holy cow! I thought Angel's Landing was dangerous. That doesn't hold a candle to this hike, and that before the snow. And Angel's Landing has cables to hold onto. That was sc-a-r-r-r-y! Even though I knew you made it back (obviously LOL), it was still gut-wrenching, much like it was the first time I watched the ascent of Angel's Landing, which has taken eight lives, the last I heard. Has anyone ever fallen to their deaths on this hike, meaning the overlook side trip? But the views were stupendous, especially at the chalet. Thank you so much for the views and panoramas you included throughout. While I've only seen a handful of your hikes so far, that was by far the most clipping of conversations I can remember. Again, thanks for your full silent (except for nature) hikes. It takes me more than one sitting to get through your hikes, though, which is totally fine. They're a great escape for this old codger who won't be going on any of these kinds of hikes anytime soon (or later). Plus, Missouri doesn't have anything close to the kinds of places you take us to. Alas, no national parks anywhere close, except the Gateway Arch National Park, which doesn't count because it's in the middle of huge city. And I don't mind your fast pace at all. Again, thanks.

      I haven't heard of any deaths. That overlook trail is manageable under dry, calm conditions (you can see from my photos that a lot of people do make it up there). However, I agree it's a level up from Angel's Landing.
      I wouldn't count Missouri out just yet. (Hint) you might recognize an interesting locale featured soon.

      Which "top" are you referencing because the Highline Trail from Logan Pass to Granite Park Chalet is relatively flat? The only place close to a highest point is the optional Grinnell Glacier Overlook.

      @@TheOutboundMind The Grinnell Glacier overlook. The hike up to it. Once we arrived at the top, it was worth it. But the first 300-500 yards back down were really scary for me. The wet slanted rocks and slim path next to a cliff was freaky on the way down. Was just curious on your take

      @@smitty923 My answer to a hiker's inquiry on the filming day was: "the views up there are worth it but they're not worth dying for." In the video, it's evident that there's nothing to halt a slip/fall down that slope-it'd certainly lead to a serious injury or death. I wouldn't attempt unless dry or adept with that kind of terrain.

      @@TheOutboundMind I wish I turned around also as I saw you coming back. When I was at the foot of Tempest Mountain my phone completely run out of battery which is my only source of navigation which is irresponsible of me 😔. I could not find my way back the section where we need to bushwhack towards Phantom Trail. I was stucked in the mountain till Tuesday afternoon till a couple of hikers who decided to camped out before going up to FTD and Granite Peak. They help me find my way back. arrived my car around 11Pm Tuesday and I was stuck since Sunday. I got out the mountain with a minor wind burned. Nature is absolutely amazing but we have to obey the rules. But anyhow nice to met you at that section. Your amazing endurance mountaineer.

    • @TheOutboundMind
      @TheOutboundMind  2 года назад

      Wow. It's very good to know you made it out after that ordeal. As I've advised: if anyone wants to have a long mountaineering career, don't rely on downloaded AllTrails tracks, GPS, or other hikers. One should have broad knowledge of the terrain, directions, and landmarks BEFORE setting out. Being self-reliant is also crucial.
      I didn't return on Tuesday (mainly because of other plans). However, after the Sunday attempt, I'm now convinced that using Phantom Creek Trail-FTD Plateau isn't an efficient way to access the mountain. Additionally, I don't think this time of the year (i.e., the weather) is good. Instead, I'll likely return sometime in September to attempt summitting, but via the Huckleberry Creek-Avalanche Lake route.
      If you want another chance, you're welcome to come along. And since we'll be going together, I'll help you summit. You can reach out via my email "theoutboundmind@gmail.com" to discuss further.

    Hey there!
    Odd question, since it’s not shown here but what tent do you use? I met you in Australia, hitchhiking from Uluṟu, and I remember being impressed with the tent you had :) I’m looking for a tent now and thought I’d check which one that was!
    Cheers

    • @TheOutboundMind
      @TheOutboundMind  2 года назад

      I remember. For that trip, I was using the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1 with footprint but WITHOUT the tent body. Instead, I added a Superlight Solo Bivy from Mountain Laurel Designs. Additionally, I swapped half of the included stakes for lighter titanium ones.
      Current, I'm trying an MSR Zoic 1 but without the tent body, as well. Instead, I use the Fast & Light Body. Plus, same bivy and stake swap.
