Two great players (RIP Mel) performing a classic! Did anyone notice, when Mel accidentally dropped his guitar pick, Buddy caught that and instantly handed him another pick without missing a beat? Seemingly a little thing, but it points up what a class act Buddy is. Great moment within a smokin’ performance.
I grew up as a kid next door to Mel, and even after he moved to Austin years later I would see him play at Antone’s, and in San Antonio on St Mary’s. We played golf all over Austin area, and in ‘89 he moved to Kitchener because he said they loved him up there more. I was blessed to visit him many times, and Ms. Angela. Memories I will always cherish, and take with me when God calls me home. Rest in eternal peace with God, I miss hearing you and your dad play back in the 60-70’s. Just a great blues guitar player.
Thank for the documentary Philip! Listening to the Giants;,Mel,Buddy,SRV, always gives me a great pleasure "On the outskirt of town" in rain or shine.👍👍 Fan from Hungary
I lived in KW for a couple years in the early 1990s and had the great fortune to see Mel play every Wednesday (or Thursday?) at Pop The Gator club, an upstairs awesome dive just off King Street. When I moved to Guelph in 1993, I found out Mel played Fridays at the campus bar of UofG. My wife took me on our first date to see Mel - she too had been a fan. Mel was a tremendous player and gentleman who influenced A LOT of people. I feel lucky to have enjoyed his passion so many times. RIP
Wow. Extraordinary! 2 masters practising their craft. I don't think I've heard a better version of this classic. Mel Brown was held in high esteem by many of his more famous contemporaries including Buddy and B.B. King. Just look at Buddy's face when Mel starts to step it out on that big Gibson to confirm that. RIP Mel and thank you for the gift of your wonderful music. And thank you Philip for posting this!
I used to love seeing Mel Brown play in Guelph when I lived there. Great to see that he got to play w/Buddy Guy- I always wondered if Mel was ever going to get his due attention. Loved his guitar tone & playing. Mel Brown-RIP.
mel brown and the homewreckers..... man that was the time when kitchener ontario had the great blues venue pop_the_gator (owned by mel) we saw buddy play there with 100 other lucky people
the kids might not appreciate Mel because he does not play loud . But he is a genius and one the greatest guitar players ever . He is doing so much more with this basic blues number than i ever heard before
Oh Yea, the best house band ever! I will never forget one of the shows I saw there in the late 80s. Mel and the standard house band+Buddy Guy+ Kim Wilson on vocals.
