I've only now come to appreciate how handsome this era of the Toronado was. I think it was best-looking of the Olds-Cadillac-Buick trio. This baby is really one of the best-looking personal luxury coupes of the time.

I bought a 1984 Olds Toronado new. The car was very solid and quiet. The interior was plush. The big shortcoming was the anemic 307 engine that only produced 140 net horsepower; the car could hardly get out of it's own way. The maple red paint didn't hold up on the roof, trunk, and hood surfaces (oxidized) , eventually requiring a new paint job. But other than that I drove the car for 13 years before selling it in 1997.

My folks bought new Olds every 3-4 years and bought 98s the the Regency then they had a 78 Toro and 2 1980s Toros-1981-1985. No problems with any. The engine was adequate and at this time it really wasn’t bad considering some of the engines on the road but yes it could’ve been a little bit more powerful but these cars road so nice and they didn’t break down. They needed the 350 engine.

that was the norm back then as far as low performance engines I had a 85 grand marquis and it to was rated at 140 hp . I replaced it with a 92 crown vic that had the 4.6 rated at 210 hp, which performance was much better. still low by todays standards now you can easily get over 200 hp from a 4 cyl naturally asperated.

@@renj6531 I bought (new) a 1976 Mercury Grand Marquis with the 460 4 barrel carb and dual exhaust. It lacked the performance of the earlier 460s (I had a 1971 Lincoln Mark lll with the 460 engine rated at 365 HP. But I read (with respect to the 1976 460 engine that the camshaft gear was retarded, and just changing that gear back to the pre 1972 gears you could pick up a noticable amount of pounds feet of torque. Plus, ignition timing was retarded. All that has changed now, with V-6 engines making more horsepower and torque than many of the old big V-8 engines.

At the time, I thought the 307 was zippy. They were relatively quiet engines, with much less drama under full throttle than the Ford 302 or even the Chevy 305. They were weak by modern standards. Fuel injection would have really made the 307 a much more responsive motor. Too bad GM didn't give it the love it gave the Chevy 305 in its later years.

if im not mistaken that 3 spoked wheel was an upgrade. i think the standard was the same one featured in the delta 88

i always thought that the front end of the toronado from this generation was kind of funny looking compared to its other 2 siblings. just largely color keyed. 1985 was definitely a transition year for these luxury coupes and full size B body Olds and buicks.

I agree with you. That section in the middle of the header panel makes the car look so funny. I love this generation Toronados but I hate that nose.
