In this Broadcast Award-winning, BAFTA and Emmy Award-nominated entertainment show, Taskmaster tyrant Greg Davies (Man Down, Cuckoo), with the help of his loyal assistant Alex Horne (The Horne Section and the show’s creator), sets out to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five hyper-competitive comedians.
Comedians that have risked life, limb, and dignity in the hope of making the Taskmaster proud so far include: Frank Skinner (The Frank Skinner Show), Mel Giedroyc (The Great British Bake Off), Romesh Ranganathan (Asian Provocateur), Hugh Dennis (Outnumbered), Sally Phillips (Bridget Jones’ Diary), Rose Matafeo (Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner 2018), and Russell Howard (The Russell Howard Hour). Unaware of what awaits them in each wax-sealed envelope, only one competitor can become the victorious owner of His Royal Task-ness’ golden head and be crowned the next Taskmaster Champion.

The tidbit about Alex not being friendly on camera makes Acaster refusing to say hello even funnier. Love it.
Oh, has Acaster done this ultimate episode yet? He should
Need a Bob Mortimer one, too
Was it Sarah and Jamali in S11 that complained about the face-heel turn from lovely-chat-over-lunch Alex to all-the-information’s-in-the-task Alex?
@@erinford8138 It's quite strange to have these particular people confused but I'm also not sure which one it was.
It doesn't say say hello to Alex on the task
I think the yoga balls began a fantastic Taskmaster tradition of lateral thinking and creative solutions. Kudos!
It was a clip of which that pushed me over the edge to watch the series.
It pretty much changed the whole show. Later tasks were written differently because of this. Richard and Tim made the show what it is today because of how they did the tasks.
Absolutely, unfortunately the writers of the show (tasks) have done a lot to remove that lateral thinking with all those sub clauses as he mentioned.
He is one of the responsibles of making what Taskmaster is today
@@Mike__B Alex adressed this once. The issue is that a lot of the contestants have watched the show, so if you do a similar task today, everyone knows "the trick" and it's not as funny and surprising anymore.
The behind the scenes is really appreciated. From the description of what it is like waiting for a task to happen, to the rabbit in the hat drama, it makes me want to watch it all over again. I'd love to hear Richard's take on Morgana's extra points for the season win.
I don't think any other contestant has done more to improve this show by their presence. Richard wasn't just one of the most good-aligned contestants, but he made Taskmaster a better show just by being a part of it.
Nothing makes me happier than knowing that Richard O and Jon R are still mad about that rabbit task ten years later and will probably be mad about it until the days they die.
That Series 2 cast is so great, I wish they could have gotten 10 episodes like later series did. Richard's lateral thinking really expanded the game, too!
Hats off to Taskmaster RUclips for letting Richard Osman voice his opinion on the scoring of the rabbit task despite denying it was unfair! Stuff like that you only see in the comments sections or other channels if people are actually butthurt about the situation, but I'm slightly genuinely surprised that Taskmaster youtube channel lets their participants say what was on their mind when they first encountered the tasks despite controversies
Oh, it's lovely. Same on the podcasts, imo. Glassdoors, here.
I will say he is technically wrong- they DID do it again at least once, where Jo Brand read Greggs mind for like 8-10 points in an on stage task.
But I do agree, the one that irks me was Champion of Champions 2, where the final stage task is all or nothing. They obviously did it for the drama, but I maintain Liza Tarbuck was robbed. Liza goes into that round with 14, and Richard Herring (the winner and next closest competitior) goes in with 12. In a normal situation, Liza is expected to get at least one point, meaning Richard would need to get 3rd to tie, 2nd to win on normal points. If i remember rightly, it comes down to Liza and Richard in the end, so she should have won.
@@345tom This is incorrect on the grounds that Richard was the only one to successfully advance past the first round of the live task, meaning if that task was scored like every other task, Liza gets AT BEST 1 point if not 0 and Richard still wins. Look at the last task on Season 16 for a comparison.
I adore how seriously Richard takes it, but aslo how he is aware of that and appreciates everyone and the whole experience. He's a great producer because he really cares about the concepts and details.
6:58 I'm glad Richard acknowledged this, because that's my thought process every time there's a long list of caveats on a task too: "Richard Osman got us here" 😂
Rhod Gilbert didn't help matters either.
I dunno, i think it was just the natural direction of the show as it became more famous, more contestants knew what to expect.
Sarah being a good example of this (always checking under the table)
I just don't like it when they do clever lateral thinking and it gets shut down
@@KyleBaran90 That's part of rule#1 of the show: Greg's word is law. If he thinks something is lazy or dumb instead of seeing it as clever lateral thinking, then that's what it is, doesn't matter what it seems like to the rest of the world. It's frustrating when you really disagree with the way he sees things, but is also what makes the show what it is.
Other people have done similar and it has developed over time. I don't think he can take all the credit.
About half way through this video, I realized that I hadn't stopped grinning. This show, and the people they have on it bring actual joy to my life. Well done, cast and crew.
There has actually been at least one other time during a live task where you can get one genuine point for every completion of the task. “Reading Greg’s mind” when they had to guess whether there was a picture of a laminator or a horse.
My mind went there, too! Didn't Jo Brand get around 20 points for her uncanny ability to read Greg's mind? 😂😂😂
I think she didn't end up winning the episode though
That one wasn't as bad though because there were more episodes so the dodgy scoring could be made up for more easily, and as someone else mentioned, Jo didn't even end up winning the episode.
@@iliketrains3495 Also I wouldn't want to risk angering Jo by quibbling that point when she clearly has The Powers
Also, there was a lot more cheating going on in that task. Loved it
Nice portrait of Richard in the background, the blue really makes him shine
he's snuck in some House of Games set dressing!
So glad someone else noticed this. And it was the first series with patatas
This man traveled from England to do a book signing a block from my house. Clearly still giddy. He looked at my name and said oh man I thank you tre. A 3 letter name for an autographer is mind blowing. We had a chat and I told him how much I appreciate his travelling to meet me. September 2024... harrisburg pa. Thank u Mr osman and thank u taskmaster. Thanks for introducing me to british comedy.
I’ve made my animal crossing island into a Taskmaster island, and I have two exercise balls and a yoga mat on one hill, and a shopping cart on one side of a river, and a grocery bag on the other side of the river
Omg drop the dream code
Genius island idea
Richard wrote the book on lateral thinking in Taskmaster. He was also always really supportive of the other contestants, I know that isn't always the most entertaining thing, for instance, Ardal picking holes in everyone else's attempts 😂
The Richards were great. Osman. Herring, ardal was really exhausting and generally unfunny imo.
@@ConroyMatheson Ardal being a menace 😂
Richard Osman did actually start out a bit like Ardal, but it didn't last long - I think it was after something like only half of the first episode he was being supportive and defending his fellow contestants 😄
do people not like ardal? he was hilarious
@@partlyironic I think he was given as an example of someone being very entertaining. I found him hilarious too! He judged it well, it wouldn't have worked in some other lineups.
Richard was a great competitor to watch, and even though he was on one of the shortest seasons, he's left the most lasting impression on the show with all the added complications in tasks since the Yoga Balls. I also really appreciate the producer's insight he gave, since we can't really get that from other competitors.
Richard, your series is one of my favorites! Don't sell yourself short. You were just as funny as any of your fellow contestants. (Well, maybe Joe beat you out. Barely.) Thanks for doing the show and thank you for coming back for the ultimate. ❤
The funniest thing about this video is that Richard just walked over to the TM house, from his own house, which is just down the way.
Fun Fact: The location of the shopping trolley task which Richard didn't know, is actually Amersham which he references in his poem to the mayor of Chesham.
yeah but he doesn't give two fucks about that...
Series 2 is the shortest but it's unquestionably the most iconic and is truly responsible for taskmaster becoming the incredible show that it is now.
*joint shortest with the 3rd series
Richard can say his legacy on taskmaster is the clauses in every task, which is a fair point, but I would argue his actual legacy, based on the last rant, is the phrase 'wins X real points'
That phrase was used in Series 9 "Horse or Laminator", right?
@TMAMovie to my knowledge it's how they've referred to any task where real points are offered, including that one, presumably because Richard is right, the wording was confusing
9 years later and Osmon still can't help himself but to hit us with some facts and c-bombs.
"I'm not thinking this is the masked figure behind the grassy knoll. This is the rabbit heard round the world". 😂😂😂
I didn't know Richard before Taskmaster, and he was my favourite contestant for series 2. Loved how he approached the tasks.
When I wanted to read more books, I saw the Thursday Murder Club books. My memory of Richard in the series and that positive vibe that I associated with him, made me buy book one. I'm now on book 3. It's brilliant. Just the kind of thing I like to read.
Honestly, if you like Richard Osman, you need to watch Richard Osman's House of Games!
@@susanboon4605 great shout - and lots of TM contestants (and Little Alex Horne) have been on HOG too!
Agreed, I've read all the books of Thursday Murder Club so far. They're such a treat. Looking forward to the movie as well 😁
@@susanboon4605 but they have messed up the episodes that were on YT, and now you get a series of all the contestants doing the same thing, which is super annoying
Series 2 put TM on the map for me- combination of contestants was exemplary. Lots of iconic moments including yoga balls.
Ah, yes.
"Well, thank you, John.
F**k you, Alex!"
😄
Yes, that group of contestants was phenomenal. And let's not forget Katherine's recruiting help for the yoga balls! Asking for help was her lateral move several times.
You were absolutely fantastic. Especially the walk through, turn to camera, and say "I'm Richard Osman". Classic.
His big-brain plays with the darts betting and the exercise balls still live rent-free in my head today and I love it :)
"Good luck with the books." - Greg Davies
It's strange when one of the most clever people in tele and a quiz show host says: "Being clever is a zero-sum game."
Wow, this is an incredible BTS. Thank you for this Richard and kudos to the team for letting him publish the gripes about the rabbit task.
I’m the Taskmaster fan in the house, but my mom loves Mr. Osman’s books, so I forwarded this clip to her. She loved watching him toss a trolley!😊
The first time I saw the yoga mat task, as a fellow linguist, I was so happy to see that my reasoning for the validity of Richard Osman's attempt was backed by Susie Dent. In my 15 plus years in my field, I've never felt so validated! 😂 The "on the top of that hill" part can definitely be understood in two ways, one in which it is a prepositional phrase for the entire sentence and one in which it is a determining factor for an element of a sentence member (in this case, the prepositional phrase "on the yoga mat" with "on the top of that hill" being the determining factor for the yoga mat, meaning "place the balls on the mat you find on that hill"... meaning, the mat doesn't have to remain in the hill, it's merely a determiner for that particular mat, so that's the only mat that can be used...) which is what linguistic juggler Osman also realized and used to his advantage! I genuinely found it brilliant, and I often use it in my lessons when teaching grammar.
Disappointed the video didn't end with Richard eating the egg and clapping his hands.
There's footage missing at 8:30 it just cuts to a black screen
also lol at Richard still being salty about the Rabbit task
He's not wrong though. This and Mae Martin's pineapples bothered me and I know it is just a show and not a big deal but still...
@@mingiinimene3335The pineapples were fine but I’m still as annoyed about the rabbits as they are.
@@mingiinimene3335 The pineapples really aren't that big a deal; even if they hadn't been counted Mae would have still come second in that task, so it was a difference of one point in the end
Katherine also violated the rules of the task; she manipulated her hand from the starting position so that she had full mobility of her forearm. The task specifically stated that the belt had to remain where it was (it said wrists, but it was wrapped around everyone's forearm instead).
I completely blanked on that so I had to look it up, but Catherine got 15 points from that task (Jon and Richard got 4 and 7 respectively), and Catherine won the series by 4 points over Jon. So it really did make a difference. That being said, they could've done what Catherine did: seeing Doc and Joe take off the hats and stuff the rabbits in instead of trying to catch them earlier
Richard is a man who has done many things, but I think it's beautiful that arguably his greatest achievement was carrying a mat down a hill
a legacy for the ages
Whenever I'm trying to convince someone to watch Taskmaster (which I do with annoying frequency) I show them the Balls on the Yoga Mat task. It's the perfect gateway task for newbies.
I show the "open the briefcase" from champion of champion 1, because every contestant had a completely different and funny approach, from Josh's nerdyness to Noel's complete destruction.
I show the "make the biggest tower of cans while going to shake Alex's hand every 10 seconds introducing yourself to be from a different country". 😁 Love learning about which tasks everyone uses.
@@JudyCZ That one's fun because of Aisling's freak out in the studio. My other favorite is "Get the Basketball Through the Hoop Without Using Your Hands, "
I show them the Hugh Dennis and Mel Giedroyc - the Blind folded obstacle course with instructions in a foreign language task. It's great fun, but doesn't give too much away.
He got me at "this little... grit in the oyster". The slow rage build.
Nice touch as always - this time the pictogram on the wall behind Richard.
Richard lobbing the shopping trolley is the first thing i think of about him on taskmaster, I thought he bossed the throw!
Him talking about trying to outsmart the taskmaster reminds me of David Mitchell talking about Bob mortimer stories on would i lie to you
You can really tell how much TV is Richard's natural habitat in this, when you compare his talking to camera to the other Ultimate Episodes ❤
The eye protector sign behind him was one of his best prize tasks
It wasn't a prize task, it was the "take a picture of something that looks like you" task
@iliketrains3495 oh yeah thanks
He's absolutely right about the rabbits, biggest injustice in Taskmaster history.
I'm so glad Osman realizes how much his subversion of the Yoga mat task has changed Taskmaster. I just hope he also knows that it's 100% for the better, watching contestants come up with clever work arounds for tasks has been one of the greatest parts of watching the series over the years. Combined with the arms race to restrict said work arounds.
19:30 That's show business, Richard. Hope you got over it. It was absolutely amazing for your fans to watch!
totally forgot it was only 5 episodes! Might have to rewatch from season 1 again 😭 I'm excited to here more about the logistics of the Mayor of Chesham task, I always wondered how that was and how other people's attempts would affect they Mayor's reaction to the people after. It's just hilarious, the dead silence and everyone watching the contestant in a random conference room lmao
Richard!!! So many firsts for the show and it's always a joy to see him in anything really. I enjoyed seeing him outside of a hosting role when this series came out! I love that they brought in Suzie Dent's opinion and everything to get to the most fair verdict.
I think everyone on that series has been on 8oo10CDC multiple times, except perhaps Doc Brown (?), so bringing in Susie Dent was perfect.
Richard blowing up the bed is perhaps the reason it's not always "your time starts when you read the task". If true, he has set more than one precedent in TM history.
it's so great to see contestants from early series drop by! :')
Richard holding a grudge this long is great. Fight the good fight!
No mention of "eat a whole banana correctly,"? That was my favorite Osman moment.
Damn Osman is so descriptive and well spoken here. Love it.
Him chucking the trolley is one of my favourite TM moments
'Richard Osman throws a trolley into a canal.' sounds like a show Alan Partridge might pitch.
Richard and Jon are totally correct that the rabbit scoring was outrageous and that Alex and the Andys should feel ashamed and apologize every day.
Jon, Richard's son?
More than 5 points? They did that with Jo Brand and the horses didn't they?
I have to be honest, I was really disappointed that Jon or Richard didn't win S2.
Nah it was fine and a great way of raising the stakes at the end, everyone still had equal chance of winning didn't they 🤷🏽♀️😊
@@TheYorkRose If that's the case, why don't they do something like that in the end of every season?
Such a beautiful and smart person! Love you Richard ❤
When I think of this series, the task that sticks out to me is Joe begging not to have his dignity stripped of him on the hole in one.
Impress the mayor! That’s such a hilarious task! 🤣
These are so great. When I saw the latest one was Richard Osman, I knew it was going to be good, and I was not disappointed.
Richard’s choice with the yoga mat and balls is the clip that made me fall in love with TM.
To be fair, a lot of us are in love with Susie Dent.
Really like this “Behind the Scenes” take. Thanks, Richard!
Never forget Richard Osman and his son, Jon Richardson
"Richard Osman, and John, Richard's son"
The only reason I'd be interested in any kind of fame is because of Richard, I want a chance to do Richard Osman's House of Games. He's one of my favourite TM contestants.
I love Richard… he’s very funny on everything he does… I’m a big fan of his.
Me too. He's always so calm, well-spoken, intelligent and decent. He's fabulous.
Rabbits wasn't the only off scoring system. Frequently the all or nothing rule is applied. That is how Liza lost the CoC, she got 0 on the live task. Soooo... more anger directed towards alex.
When there is an off-scoring its made clear from the start. The rabbits scoring system came out of nowhere.
Sometimes winner takes all makes sense if the format of the task will only ever have one winner (e.g. find the vinegar), but if it's just for drama/they could change the task to make 54321 work then unghh
In the episode where Richard's kids were in attendance, he scored only 5 points throughout, which is the second-lowest episode score of all time (tied with Charlotte Ritchie in the Series 11 opener) and the lowest score without any negative points. Oof.
I was just watching the (Festive) House of Games week with Jon Richardson on it earlier today! Richard is such a charming guy, he sells himself short in terms of being in front of a camera. He might not love it the way some people do, but he sure knows how to speak and think on his feet. Hard to believe that series 2 came out 10 years ago.
Series 2 is the most underrated season of Taskmaster. Everyone talks about series 5 or 7 but this one was the absolute best to me even for its short duration.
Wonderful break down Richard. Just wonderful. Thank you.
Interesting to hear how much more stressful and less enjoyable it is for non-comedians / non-performers. We've heard comedians say while doing their worst that although they were mad at the time, in the back of their minds they were happy that it would be good TV. New Years Treat makes a lot more sense now.
Kudos to Taskmaster for letting Richard Osman air his grievances about the rabbits. I'm fully behind him on that one.
If I ever meet Richard Osman, I will tell him
"congratulations on the yoga balls on the hill"
Richard Osmans yoga ball task made Taskmaster what it is
They have done another live task since that didn't score 54321. In series 9, there was a live task that involved correctly guessing which card Greg was holding. Jo Brand got nearly 15 points for it.
Richard!! What a legend! Loved how you went into detail about how you felt in certain moments.
The end of the task stated that the balls only needed to be on the yoga mat. It made no mention of where the mat had to be.
3:02 - Are we sure that Richard created his ultimate episode? He sounds very much surprised here.
Presumably they work together with the producers to choose their ultimate episode weeks or months before filming. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he doesn't remember which ones he chose and isn't aware of what order the filmed tasks are going to be presented to him.
Wouldn't surprise me if they film 10ish iconic tasks and pick the best reactions from the contestants to make these vids
@@MinekEzQM He probably picked tasks because they showed whatever he wanted to highlight, but didn't necessarily remember exactly what he scored.
3:55 the most TM thing ever is to take the time to edit out any cameras and crew members from this angle aha
they might have just got him to do fake unpausing of the laptop from an over the shoulder high angle a few times so that they could edit those in wherever and superimpose the paused footage onto the laptop, so they're only doing that (the laptop screen edit) and can have everyone else & gear out of shot for those pick-ups (so no-one/nothing else needs editing).
I admit Taskmaster was my introduction to you. Then I discovered your books, which I LOVE! BTW, I really like the beard.
I love Richard Osman! I’m addicted to his books because of his wonderful humor and brilliant mind!
Richard Osman is one of my all time favorite Taskmaster contestants.
He was back then and 53567 series later he still is
Channelling the grumpy old man energy, good stuff
Not to put any more fuel on the fire, but Katherine didn't keep the belt around her wrists either
Osman is such a pro host x-D
*"Richard Osman."* - _Richard Osman_
18:55 People consistently hate when Alex says “everything you need to know is on the task”. It used to simply amuse me but now I’m starting to understand why they hate it.
It's why there's never a need to feel sorry for LAH, he brings it on himself by deliberately putting their backs up lol
Should have included you (Richard) downing the raw egg then leaving with your cup of tea. Classy moment
Richard Osman, brilliant, thanks for sharing memories of one of the best series in TM!
I loved that season and Richard was probably my favorite. None of them were bad.
You were awesome! You made me watch Taskmaster
When I first watched the episode with the balls and yoga mat I thought exactly the same as Richard. Nowhere did it say take the balls up the hill and place on the yoga mat up there. What he did was a perfectly reasonable interpretation of the task. Well done Richard, stick to your guns 😎
This was great!!! It was only 5 shows and that was the season that sucked this American into UK TV! Lets bring them back!!!
I love this and I love how honest Richard is about what REALLY happened
They actually did do the "potential 20 point task" in the future with the Horse or Laminator task in S9
19:36 😂 thank you for explaining your feelings here.. i got to understand your feelings
Thank you, Richard. Loved the series 💙🌻💙
I didn’t realize the rabbits were so controversial
My theory on the rabbits task is that Alex added the 'points per rabbit' stipulation in last minute to prevent Richard from being guaranteed the episode win, as he had a 5 point lead over Katherine who was in second place. There's been other occasions where this sort of this thing happened, such as winner-takes-all stipulations put in to stop a runaway winner (Noel in the jazz-words) or to help an underdog out (Paul Sinha in the 5-syllables).
When the contestant's turn is left as the last one during the rundown, it's either what Richard says that they absolutely nailed it or, especially if it was Bob Mortimer, they did something bonkers.
