- San Francisco is home to many of the nation's most iconic landmarks and a gateway to some of the greatest wonders in the United States including the last remaining redwood groves like those protected by Muir Woods National Monument.
But 28 miles off the coast from San Francisco lies an unknown jewel. Abused and exploited since long before the days of the California Gold Rush The Farallon Islands have become a haven for wildlife and a beacon of natural healing. The waters team with seals, sea lions, blue whales, grey whales, orcas, and great white sharks. The skies filled with nesting sea birds. Between May and July there is more life present near this island that any place we have visited.
If you travel to San Francisco, we'd highly suggest a visit to the Farallones as well as a trip to the Muir Woods.

This is such an amazing video with great captioning. Thank you!!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching and taking the time to share your experience!
Nice video 😀 and finally nice weather at the Farallons 😀
Excellent video!! so much information too thanks/ two hours is a long way on the boat not sure i am up for that glad you took us out there this way... we knew some of the history and wildlife stuff but not nearly as much as what you give us here thanks so much ... waving at you from the other side of the Bay we are in Berkeley/ hope you had a nice time around here!!
Glad you enjoyed it! It's quite an adventuresome ride. Waving back at you. Any trips lined up for the year?
@@HomeInWildSpaces this year we're staying local, and on Fire- lots of short trips to the desert and our "big trip" is 8 ngihts in the CA desert/ we also have a 3 night backpacking permit for Yosemite in august. we've actually been to the desert quite a bit all winter as well just nothing video worthy
greetings from hayward as a fishermen i suggest you make the trip just pick a calm day and take sea sick meds
I’ve always wanted to go to to the Farallons to the see Great Whites up close.
Ditto. I had hoped to spot a great white on our trip, but not on this occasion. I hope to return some day and fulfill the dream.
I know there bad thing involved in chumming and baiting a shark but since you can't do it in California waters it's hard to find white sharks for cagediving where in Australia, NZ and SA you can do it all day and the boats will swarm with white sharks!!
Great video!
Thanks! So glad you enjoyed the video. It was a terrific way to spend a day.
@@HomeInWildSpaces greatly shot and edited! I learned so much from your video. So neat that wildlife has this little oasis not far out of the San Francisco Bay.
To those really interested read Susan Casey’s Book “devils Teeth” nothing better on this subject.
We wrote an article on the Farallones and quoted Casey a few times. Excellent resources. Thanks for the tip!
Hey I have that book. It's awesome
Very nice :-)
Many thanks! It's a remarkable place.
This video amazes me. The Farallones are known worldwide as a great white shark breeding ground with the same female sharks coming back year after year. There was only a cursory mention of sharks at hte very end.
Very true, but since I did not capture any footage of great whites, I chose to focus on what I could document. Hoping to get some great white content up some day. Thanks for the feedback!
What boat charter did you take?
We went with the Oceanic Society aboard the Salty Lady.
Beautiful video, bad sound
Sorry for that. Thanks for watching!
Great White breeding grounds in those waters.
We haven't heard that sharks breed here. But the definitely frequent these waters.
More like a feeding ground in the fall and early winter months.
@@HomeInWildSpaces yess there are huge Great Whites in those waters. Never put a toe in it
My work boots are under the GG bridge. Bad CG tradition on your last patrol to toss them. Hopefully that’s discouraged now. 🤦🏼♂️
artificial reefs help water life
We hope so too. Although, if the event has taught you to be more careful about the trash you leave behind and to take better care of the earth, then the act of throwing your boots overboard may still yield a net positive result.
But we agree. We hope that tradition has ceased.
If they were not made from plastic what is the harm they will biodegrade no big deal.
Better then the medical waste and 💉 floating around
Better hope your boat don't sink there, you would not catch me in a boat or a plane in that area, Nope no way.
Very true. Definitely not the best place to get stranded. The good news is that as treacherous as the Farallones can be, there are relatively few shipwrecks.
