My friend works for many government departments as a contractor. Her projects last years sometimes. She’s a self employed contractor. However she is expected to work full time hours, doesn’t get paid on public holidays, gets no annual leave and is paid gross. Her government employers would absolutely insist she’s not an employee.
And she can claim her home as an office her Motor vehicle expenses tc and significantly save tax. not to mention take on extra work or work when she pleases
She usually can’t take on extra work as the contracts often preclude it and the fact that she’s expected in the office 5 days a week also does. Yes she can claim that. She also has no paid leave, loses income on public holidays when the offices are closed, gets no Kiwi Saver etc etc.
@@marcusnz232 shecan do kiwisaver herself , she can contract to others if she wants unless that is in their agreement and can make a substantial tax saing -pros and cons. For people working from home its a very good situation.

Wait until the old retired guy who does your garden says he is your employee and you have to pay him annual and sick leave. Sounds stupid. It is stupid. Just like this idiot Uber case. They are independent contractors. If you want employee status become a taxi or bus driver.
Brooke is such a huge disappointment. She needs to ban unions and protests, employees bullying bosses. Also reign in recruiters forcing them to show salary in adverts
Van Veldon is a silly little 31 year old who has never employed staff or contracted contractors. How the hell would she know? What experience has she got? Shes just a priggish sanctimonius university kid just adding another layer of beaureacracy. In the real world these tests whatever way they are structured are as leaky as a sieve. Why do we pay these self righteous uni politicians ?
It use to be much simpler if you could prove a pattern that didn’t change, it was deemed you were a full time employee.

If he works solely on your property, that’s an employee. The old guy is a sole trader who contracts to various customers.
@@Winstonsmithsalias Just like an Uber driver. He's not a personal chauffeur, he's an opportunist for hire.
Shortly to become employees, similar to couriers.
The IRD decides who / what is a contract arrangement to
Yes but only after the government sets the laws.
