Percy does have that vibe though, it's like a "defeating darkness by embracing it" aesthetic.

Having watched the first campaign, I must say, Your comments about the bird hit hard.
I don't know how much this series will be able to adapt, but I hope it gets to THAT part.

I’d settle for getting the Chroma Conclave, but going to completion would be HUGE.

The raven totally connects, though the series may not get to the point where it's relevant.
I 100% recommend you watch the Campaign 1 character intros, and the history of Exandria (the setting which the series takes place).

The bear can't talk, but the ranger has a spell called Speak with Animals that allows her to talk to the bear, so we may hear him speak.

'The Bird' is the representation of 'The Raven Queen' the world's goddess of Fate and Death.

It's not too spoilish to point out that the bird represents The Raven Queen, a goddess in this realm who bounds together the destinies of the characters.

The Raven Queen is also the goddess of death, but not the afterlife.

I think the official "classification" of D&D is Tabletop RPG, and I consider it to be the precurser to videogame RPGs, so you're not entirely wrong comparing it to those :) also, with the blue tusked dudes, they look a lot like trolls from World of Warcraft, not sure if they are inspired by them or any other character/race in some fantasy media.

This is the best rabbit hole you will ever go down. It may claim your sanity, but it’ll be worth it.
On a serious note, since the series will be based on campaign 1, you might want to check out some of the animatics and recaps from campaign 2 (aka the Mighty Nein) since they won’t spoil you on this story, but will show you the kind of shenanigans this cast (playing different characters in the same world) get up to. Both stories have a brilliant balance of epic and emotional storylines and absurd character/situational humor.

Yes, the raven is a reference to the Raven Queen, AKA Matron of Ravens, the goddess of fate and death, BUT it has a larger meaning to Vox Machina. Anyone who has watched campaign 1 knows exactly what I'm talking about. It won't come up in the first season of the animated series, but they might eventually get to at least part of that story line.

Interesting thing, that bird is related to a god of death (not a bad guy), weaving the threads of fate to bring together these heroes, eventually making a closer relationship to the party, one of them especially.

The blue creatures with the tusks appear to be based on DnDs ice trolls, but they could closey resemble many a troll-y goblin-y creature from somthing else your familiar with. Percy (the gunslingers) bit in the opening walking away from the sunset seems to be an homage to the Trigun anime.

    Awesome reaction!
Given this is the Briarwood Arc, I want to see the first time VM fought the Briarwoods in Emon, where Percy walked towards Sylas Briarwood, unshoulders Bad News, yells out "SY-LAS!!", before unloading four rounds into him.
That scene still gives me chills to this day -- and at that point, I wanted Sylas Briarwood dead, and didn't care about what it took for No Mercy Percy to have his vengeance.
Edit: In case anyone doesn't know, when Pike says, "LIGHT 'EM UP!", and sends energy into Vex's arrow, that, ladies and gents, is War God's Blessing, which in D&D gives a +10 bonus to attack for the recipient. By Saran'Rae, Pike shows why Clerics are so good, such an awesome class to play, in game!
By the way, the word "cinematic" does not have the first 't' in the word.
    About the characters:
The bear is named Trinket, and he is the pet of Vex, the ranger. Her brother Vax is the knife-throwing rogue. Grog is the grey Goliath barbarian. "No Mercy" Percy is the gun-slinger and inventer of firearms on Exandria -- and the main villain of this first season is a vampire. Pike is the white-haired gnome cleric in plate armor, who is best friends with Grog. And Scanlon...he's a gnome bard, or musician, who, like Pike, buffs the rest of the party with spells. But she can also fight in her own right.
Never before Critical Role have I ever been so invested in a bunch of fictional characters before -- which goes to show the quality of the story-telling of Critical Role.
And the bird is a raven, the symbol of the Raven Queen, a mortal who was given the power over the transition of life to death. She is also the Watcher of Fates, which is why you see the golden thread wrapping around each character.

There is a deity in this world called the Raven Queen, which plays a certain role.

  • @elsalaiho1699

Someone's probably told you already, but the bird - meant to be a raven - (and the golden threads and stuff) are symbols/thingies related to the goddess of death and fate in the setting! Much more than that will be spoiling things, but, I think that much is ok to tell

Fun fact, this piece was originally created by Jason Charles Miller for the show. It's had many iterations including one in the second campaign where they added words. As a critter, it's so much fun to see you react to the show. You're not wrong, it is a tabletop game and truthfully this was the precursor to most if not all RPG video games.
His name is Vax and he's actually got 3 knives and we all know the phrase "dagger dagger dagger." He is the rogue. Also, yes, the bird is important. I'm really hoping this blows up and they are able to animate to the end of the campaign.
Bidet and welcome to the fandom.

I have few groups of people in life I truly adore, Bands of people I believe have made it to demi-god status.
Among those, some have become popular or famous, among them are the crew of Critical Role and also for instance the Symphonic Metal band Nightwish.
And for me it's always for the right reasons, these are highly empathic people that listen to the community and want to give their audience an experience. They choose passion for what they do their priority in life before means, like money and other things. That mentality through time makes them what they are today.
This show is going to be nothing short of spectacular, I bet it all on that.
