I myself learned too that they helped the first portuguese king to conquer Lisbon from the moors in Iberia during the reconquista, I was never taught this! I loved learning about them! Perhaps in the future there will be more videos about the Normans!
It's so sad that most people's knowledge of the Normans is, "1066, William the Conqueror" - and nothing past that. Always love to see new videos about them, the peoples who built the foundations for modern Western Europe are not given nearly enough credit.
After reading a fair amount about them I got very interested in their history! I might do a couple more videos about the Normans all across the Mediterranean!
Its good research and reading: The Normans provided much support, chaos, and opposition to the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium). Everything in that 'Normanorum' text rang true.

I did DNA -familyresearch, and as far as I know my mothers ancestors came from south Småland. And my MtDNA showed that I had a lot of ties, 30-40% hits were in N England. This means that far back in time, more than a thousand years we share a common female ancestor. I am related to f.ex. operasinger Christina Nilsson from Småland... Rollo was a Norwegian viking by the name of Rolf, known as Gange Rolf (Walking Rolf). He was expelled from Norway by kong Harald Hårfagre (king Harold Fairhair) because Rolf engaged in domestic viking raids. He was not executed by the king because his father was an earl and a friend of king Harald. This is quite well documented in sagas and scripts by, among others, Adam of Bremen, so the claim in the video of scarce sources is quite questionable.
So almost all of my extensive English genealogy work has led me to nothing but Norman, a few Flemish, and a few Scottish family names which, other than Scottish, all originate in Normandy area but remained in England from 1066 until the 1600s when they came to America. I’m astonished to find I test as having no English ancestry but lots of Germanic and Scandinavian ancestry along with some Scottish ancestry. Is it possible that these families managed to only marry amongst eachother and maintain a Norman ancestry differing from the English population for 600 plus years and manifest itself on my genetics tests as Germanic and Scandinavian? I was always told I was German and had no knowledge of the English origins and find it pretty astonishing if so many lines managed to be a distinct ethnic group living in England for so long. They were all prominent aristocrats and descendants of William and Rollo which I’m sure is common, but I can’t imagine many have so much English geographic ancestry without the genetic ancestry of English

There was no shortage of women in Scandinavia. Vikings had wives *and* mistresses to whom they were loyal and fiercely defensive. It's a myth that Vikings were rapists, too, concocted by Victorians in their Sagas stories to instill xenophobia in the British. Scandinavian children are taught to hold their heads up high, whenever anyone starts accusing Vikings of being rapists. Only one in 33 British men have Viking DNA, which also debunks the myth.
@@KnowHistoryold English survived for 200 years after the conquest. English was already changing due to the Danes. Old English in Scotland didn’t experience the Norman conquest but it still evolved into Scots. I would blame the Angevins for all the French in English.
Quite a disappointing video considering that nearly half of it is given over to advertising your video war games... Added it which, the Normans also extended their influence to Ireland, particularly the South-east of the country. Strange you didn´t include that fact when showing their outreach into the UK. Note, I come from Norman stock!
A very small amount of the video was assigned to the sponsorship, hardly half. The norman invasions of Ireland were after this story. Look at 8:40, it CLEARLY shows Ireland having extensive norman settlement. Are you refering to the later map that specifically shows the Kingdom of England? Why would that map include the Anglo-Norman Irish?

I hold a grudge against the Normans for 1066, for the destruction of the Old English language.
On another hand, it's thanks to that that English is so intelligible for many other European languages! Have you heard of Anglish?

Viking is not a race, but an occupation and a way of living on the sea; rape is NOT "uncool", but a crime - also in the medieval times.
