This is interesting, but what about the Vandal sacking of Rome? This is what truly made "Vandal" a negative word. This was in 455, 45 years after the Visigoth sacking of Rome. (The Germanic tribes were industrious. But likewise, two thirds of the Roman army were now made up of Germanic auxiliaries.) Emperor Valentinian's widow, Eudoxia, was forced to marry Petronius, who had killed Valentinian and taken the throne. Eudoxia's daughter had been betrothed with the Vandal King Genseric's son, but she was now forced to marry Petronius' son. Eudoxia asked the Vandals for help. The Vandals sailed for Rome, knocked down the aqueducts, and made Petronius and his men flee. A Roman mob stoned Petronius to death outside the city. The pope asked the Vandals to go easy on the city and they agreed. They didn't burn and slaughter, but they looted for two weeks, and took some Romans as slaves. Eudoxia and her two daughters were brought back to Carthage, where they were treated well.
I actually have no idea how I let that slip, maybe I can do a small video just about that sack as it is quite interesting, no promises tho! That was probably the most unvandallike sack of a city I've read ahah the amount of self-control they had to not burn the city was quite impressive!
I have the impression after reading Gibbon that the Vandals earned their vicious reputation while they destroyed virtually every city in Hispania, massacring as many Romans as they could find. But by the time they reached Rome, they were relatively tame, accepting the Pope's deal to be allowed to sack what of value was left in return for sparing lives. They made Carthage the richest city in the world outside of India, and thus it was imperative to reconquer or 'liberate' it and transfer that enormous pillaged wealth to Constantinople.

They play an incredibly important role in the history of pre Islamic North Africa. Many of there local traditions still persist in Tunisia showing there influence has lasted a bit.

In 428 AD, Hippo Regius (Annaba in modern-day Algeria) was besieged by the Vandals for 14 months. Saint Augustine, the bishop of Hippo Regius, died during this time, and in 431 the city fell, and it was reduced to ashes, all but the cathedral, which escaped, together with St. Augustine's library.
Unfortunately, it is being reduced to bread crumbs again.

What do you mean the rolling sands and arid lands of North Africa 😂😂😂. North Africa was Rome's breadbasket, the climate is not different than say Sicily, or Southern Spain. We have mountains, forests rivers etc. The vandals probably hunted boars and deers in our woods.

It’s amazing how many German kingdoms existed after the fall of Rome. Ostrogoths, Vandals, Visigoths, maybe even the Frankish empire, it’s quite amazing how any of them didn’t make it.
Well, all of these kingdoms were similar in structure: The population was largely Latin speaking and Roman. The Germanic element was concentrated in the elites. With Ostrogothic Italy first invaded by the Eastern Romans and then the Lombards, Africa succesfully captured, Spain taken by the Arabs and the Franks conquering neighboring kingdoms, the Germanic nobilities were pretty much liquidated. The Franks did survive tough. Lombards were in control of Northern Italy until the Franks invaded in the 9th century (or so).
Some survived in one way or the other, the Frankish kingdoms eventually evolved to become France and Germany, the Visigoths served as a founding myth for the Spanish monarchs until very recently and the Anglo-Saxons changed the British Isles forever. They had their times and evolved throughout the ages, it's wrong to say they didn't make it, they just evolved with the times! However, saying that a modern French person is a pure-blooded Frank or anything like that is simply wrong as well.

I'm from the north west of Tunisia, our region is berber, and there are vandals mixed with berbers, we have entire tribes and families with blond hair and colored eyes in the region who have vandals ancestors.

Im Tunisian from el Djem famous for its Roman amphitheatre. I have blue eyes and so did my grandfather. In our village 10km from el Djem we have more families with blue/green eyes. I always assumed it to be a sign of Berber origin but who knows it could also be mixed with vandal genes? My grandfather looked like an Eastern European or Balkan people.
Many Vandals intermarried with Berber people so they probably have millions of descendants today.
Bro we north africans naturally have light eyes and light hair, some of us have dark hair some of us have light hair, i’m a moroccan and in my city it’s rare to find people with brown eyes. How did the local North Africans dealt with the vandals ? You didn't mention that , did they form some sort of alliances or were they in constant fueds due to Vandals being foreign.
From memory most simply accepted the change in rulership, essentialy the Vandals replaced the ruling caste and the majority of the population didn't real care about who ruled them as regardless they were still stuck paying taxes.
The neighbouring peoples did as they did with the romans, raid, trade and serve as mercenaries depending on circumstances.
From my research, other than some religious disagreements, nothing special happened, the population pretty much accepted the new rulers and for the most part, there was not a huge societal shift, just like @litd said above!
They fought and won several battles against them, taking gradually their territory

9:23 Correction what you meant to call the religion of both halves of the Roman Empire is “Nicene Christianity” not Catholicism since East and West haven’t split off into the Great Schism of 1054, so Catholicism wasn’t a thing yet. The Vandals did practice Arian Christianity though and hated Nicene Christianity for labeling them heretical. Nicene Christianity was the mainstream branch of Christianity largely practiced by the late Roman Empire and eventually due to language, culture and politics by the 11th century would split off into the Latin Catholic West and the Greek Orthodox East.
The distinction is messy and there's not a certain time at which the term catholic can be applied, but the term was widely used to refer to the Roman centred See long before the great schism. The Great Schism was just the final, official seperation of East and West, yet Catholicism as a unique part within this greater pre-schism church can definately be pointed to as a distinct thing. It's not as if the schism happened and the term 'catholic' came to exist, the difference between east and west was brewing for centuries prior.
To make it messier, Catholic could also refer to the whole Nicene church, that being the state church of the Eastern Roman Empire and the church of Rome combined. Hugely messy and confusing. Cyril of Jerusalem specifically refered to the "Catholicos" to differentiate these christians from other christians who did not follow the Roman state church.
Finally, even if these people didn't specifically use the term catholic to refer to themselves (it was complicated), we can still go back and apply the term to the church that would go on to become the definative, independent church under the Bishop of Rome, and historians do all the time - especially when you contrast it to the Arian christians who were definatively not part of this 'proto' catholic church. Still, the term works and is accepted among historians as an identifiable way to refer to this institution.
So yes, you are right, but also, so is using the term catholic. Possibly it's confusing and can conflate the modern church with the 'proto' catholic church?

Arid land? North Africa mediterranean coast was, and kinda nowadays, a fertile land producing lots of crops. In fact the roman province of Africa was the granery of Rome, and it was also direct competence with the province of Baetica in the production of olive oil. If youve never beeing there, its much less arid than many parts of Spain, for example, or Sicily.
Can you please cover the history of the Caucuses mountains ?
The Avar and Vainukh tribes and so on.
Do we know more specifically where the Vandal regiment was stationed?. I have only ever been able to find out they existed but nothing about their placement and what they did after that.
Just wanna add that Catholics in here is Chalcedonian Christians, the west and east split hadnt happened yet. Many german tribes adopted arian sect after the chalcedonian banished them outside the empire. The sassanid side with the arian, and let them have their pope rule from around baghdad. This is also one of the reason why they move further east, to hejaz, india, turkic lands, uyghur lands, mongolia and eventually chinese han lands and sumatra (indonesia).
Its interesting how a banned sect in rome eventually made their brush on the recent history by moving north ( I assume the roman saw germania and dacia as north, or maybe west) and east.
The nestorians still exist in india (split between 3 community iirc, malankaran one, syriac one, and charismatic protestant one, this one is weird tbh). In syria and iraq among the assyrians. And in nepal (the protestant one)

@@KnowHistory Same here man, I felt close to them and fascinated on how they managed to exist in such small community, without priest or even in hiding for most of the time. Look up the Mar Thoma community if youre interested, its a community of christians in south india who claim ancestry to the first indian converted by St. Thomas himself. Its being split into eastern orthodox, latin, nestorian and protestant (charismatic and anglican) churches. But they all had the same essence, Syro-Indian, their believe might different from churches to churches but I cant blame them, they hold out alone for 2000 years, sometimes without leaders, just existing is already a great feat. My people (sumatra) lost christianity back in 9th century, before the latin and german brought it back in 17th century.

@@ACIron-en6ij yeah, most of my "nerd" friend always forgot that the great migration isnt just a german migration, alans, roxolani, and sarmatian have settled around kiev, as for the alans they splintered into a couple camps some settled among the germanics (huedi vandals), the venedi (slavs) also moved to around kiev some even suggested have settled among the Iazyges. The magyars have move into kazakhstan today (well some people suggested that proto magyars were moving in 300-500ad).
But hey atleast the alans had a good run and still have descendants in georgia and russia. Unlike the iazyges whove been a client state of rome for a long time and just went poof from history, either got conquered by germanics or slavs, or just fall back into the stepps once again.

I'm not sure the demographics of North Africa too far, but you also find very 'european' looking people all over the middle east. Many Palestinians have blonde hair and fair skin, and many Iranians look like they could be German. I'm not sure if the Vandals actively made a huge change here, but it's surely worth researching. :)

Wend likely comes from "Veneti", this has caused a lot of confusion in the past as the words appear related.

And most people believe that if anything germanic people took lands from slavic people. In this case it's just not true. The Vandals and Goths moved away mainly because of the huns, while the slavic people were pushed into those regions by the huns. At least that is what I think happened. After all if you look at the region of origin for slavic tribes, they are definitely in the way of the huns. They probably were enslaved by them. And they probably used those slaves to settle the regions that then have been left by the germanic tribes that left.
