I never post comments on RUclips, but I felt really compelled to do so here because I connected so much with what you guys spoke to about body image. Camille hit it on the head in speaking to the fact that we all tend to grow up without paying particular attention to how we look, but that can change in an instant somewhere in early adulthood for a variety of factors. I know that for me, this instant was when I first started college and all of the sudden there were what seemed like an infinite amount of people surrounding me to compare myself to. I workout regularly and strive to maintain a healthy diet, but even now I still find myself beginning to obsess over calorie counts, etc. sometimes and I have to remind myself that my personal goals are exactly that, personal, and as long as you feel good and enjoy what you're doing then there's nothing to worry about. Just wanted to drop this here and to thank you Julie for including this issue in one of your episodes!! Hope you're healing well and can't wait to see how far your Pursuing Health initiative takes you, its a fantastic idea! :)
oh my god, can you two just start a podcast yourselves and gab all day every day about crossfit and life and and any and all related albeit tangential topics? LOL I really loved and appreciated your conversation about body image because that IS such a thing for women, potentially even more so than for men (though i don't deny men can and do have body image issues as well). i've never been one to obsess over my physical appearance, though i've certainly been victim to its pressures in one way or another. since reaching a certain level of crossfit (which is quite low in the grand scheme of things) i've come to be rather happy with my body's appearance. and less so for the aesthetic appeal of less body fat or bigger muscles, but because it is an outward reflection of the hard work and dedication i've put in to making it so. furthermore, i don't work hard at my fitness so that my body looks good - the reward is being able to do an unassisted pull-up; "master" double unders; squat, clean (& jerk), and snatch (maybe one day, lol) my own body weight - basically lifting a human over my head, not just once but multiple times in a row over the course of 10 minutes; being able to lift heavy boxes at work without anyone's help and getting a kick out of my male co-workers aww when they realize I'VE GOT IT; throwing something hard and accurately; running after a pop fly as hard as i can and catching it; running around the bases faster than expected --- all of these things, whether they happen in the gym, on the softball field, or in every day life, are the things that make me want to continue pursuing fitness. having strong muscles is but a bonus. to feel that i am in control of myself and can interact with the world around me more confidently is why i do what i do 3 times a week.
Great podcast. Two of my favorite crossfit athletes. Both intelligent, hard working and beautiful. Great point by Camille: It is through people that are different and think differently that the world evolves and reaches new heights.
