Thanks for this sign-off from Reno. I thought WIS-TV in Columbia, SC was the only TV station to use John Wayne at sign-off.

This is a full KOLO-TV Sign-off, than the partial one on the Reno Clips page, and not any Translators are Broadcast on Channels 70 through 83 anymore, due to other allocations with other UHF frequency translators being shown in its sign-off. Gray Television is the parent company of KOLO-TV.

      WIS-TV is a sister station

You're right on kyndle hewett, and Gray Television Group, Inc. merged with Raycom Media, Inc. earlier this year. And Gray Media Group, Inc. still owns and operates KOLO-TV Channel 8 in Reno, Nevada and now KVVU-TV Fox 5 Henderson-Las Vegas, KPTV Fox 12 Oregon and KPDX Portland-Salem-Vancouver, KTVK 3 and KPHO-TV CBS 5 Phoenix, and their sister stations in Colorado and other TV markets.

How come the screen went into black mode at 4:41 anyway?

That's when the transmitter was turned off and the picture went to snow.

Would anyone know what kind of color bar generator KOLO used in those days?

Wondering if Verdi, NV is named after the composer of operas - who never would pronounce his name the way the announcer did.

K12IX in Austin is still around
K49CK in Stead is a newer translator

No, those translators with channels 70-83 are no longer broadcast due to other frequency allocations.

Highly unlikely. These days most frequencies are used for cell phones, other communication or even digital channels.

Especially in Canada--I know having seen some Canadian TV sign-offs on the web.
