ELP was always so, so far ahead of its' time. From The Beginning is a very mellow, simple song, yet quite good. Don't forget about TARKUS! Hahaha!

Oh Tarkus....Thoust 21 minute run time will not intimidate moi!! I think it has the most votes on my ELP list, so it has to be soon!!

First time seeing them live--and it's from a '97 concert?? Jeez...Can't wait for you to see what we all got to see (I saw them twice in '74) back in the day.

Yea, next live I do from them will be from the 70s, if I can find good footage. For sure the big advantage of more recent is much better video/audio quality...

If you want to see some really crazy stuff, search for "Rondo live in Zurich 1970". Find the one that is 18:12 long. Keith absolutely abuses his Hammond L100 organ to get some of the strangest sounds you'll ever hear from an organ. Also Carl pounds out an amazing drum solo.

Let's see I saw them in 1971 when yes opened up for them I saw them in 1974 for the Brain Salad Surgery tour I saw them at the end of 1976 when Journey opened for them I saw them twice in 1977 and finally for the decade in 1978 and they broke up shortly thereafter however I saw them after they reformed several times in the following decades however the 1970s were the shows that were really important to me because they were the leaders of the pack at the top of their energy and creativity and I always say if you haven't seen them in the seventies especially the early seventies you haven't really seen them at their best😮 the standard in musicianship by which all other groups were measured by back then😮

Ah, Greg Lake. One of the premier voices in rock music. And this is one of the songs that most acoustic guitarists learn.

Nice!!!! Definitely an amazing song. Only got to see them once in the 90’s. There’s a live ELP (I think from California Jam from 1974) where Keith Emerson plays a grand piano that lifts up 50 feet in the air while spinning!! I remember watching Cal Jam mainly for Deep Purple.

    • @retroreactions....

I guess it's inevitable that Keith would go digital eventually. Nothing wrong with that. I'm just expecting that fat Moog at the end.

The first song I remember from ELP, was this song, way back in 1973, and I went out and bought the album. Greg voice here, is thicker sounding, because he's older now. I believe Greg was in his early 20's when they released this song.
If you REALLY want to see them RLP when they were at the Height of their Supergroup Status, then you need to see ELP perform Pirates - Live In Montreal, 1977. It will blow your mind, as to how musically talented they were. Here is the link to their Emerson - Pirates - Live In Montreal, 1977.

I wish you'd listened to the studio version. Much better. Greg Lake actually does a triple layer of bass, acoustic, and Lead guitars and Keith's adlib at the end is much better.
