BCNR just played a few shows for the first time since Isaac left and it still sounded absolutely fantastic! Some other members did the vocals and it sounds amazing
Shocked to see so few King Krule recommendations, absolutely essential in terms of modern British experimental rock. Mind-blowing stuff pulling from everything from post punk to jazz to triphop. Highly recommend his last 2 albums Man Alive and The Ooz.
if you haven't heard them already you need to listen to godspeed you black emperor they are a staple of the the post rock genre and have arguably one of the best discographies of all time
If you haven’t already listen to some stuff by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Lift Your Skinny Fists and F#A#infinity are some of my favorite post rock records and they’re mind-altering. AFUT has a lot of Godspeed influence sonically in some passages
I think aside from them coming from the same scene, Black Midi and Black Country, New Road both make music that's very obviously (even on first listen) incredibly technically impressive music, but their songwriting and vocals can be more of an acquired taste. Black Midi definitely took me longer to get into though, largely because Isaac writes and sings in a very emotionally bare way that's easier to connect with, whereas here Geordie is largely goofing off, crooning and doing goofy voices. Highly recommend watching their KEXP performance, one of the best performances I've ever seen. And I agree, Morgan Simpson (the drummer) is absolutely astounding, probably the member I end up paying the most attention to. Oh yeah and please do Car Seat Headrest's Twin Fantasy, you'd love that!
Geordie definitely has a lot of fun and goes into different characters but I wouldn’t write it off as just goofing off. It’s obviously REALLY different from Isaac’s style, but I find there’s a lot of charm in Geordie’s storytelling and weird worlds that are unique for every song. At least on this album, Schlagenheim is more just fucking around lol
Please do black midi's debut record Schlagenheim! It's very raw and less sonically diverse than Cavalcade, but also very strong. Similar dynamic comparing BC,NR's two albums. Also, highly recommend Squid's Bright Green Field! Another amazing record from this post-brexit post-punk wave
I BEG you listen to Spiderland by Slint at some point, I literally can’t stop listening to them at the moment and seeing as you liked bcnr so much they’d probably be perfect :)
Spiderland is in my top 3 of all time. Often at 1. It's incredibly good. I still can't believe how unique its sound is and how it makes me live the album
the drummer of black midi, morgan simpson, also played the drums on the intro track, outside, on the terrific injury reserve record from last year. they also sampled a black midi single on knees. the two groups have been touring together recently, and black midi is dropping their new album on july 15th.
You REALLY should listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s “Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven”. It’s considered a classic by many, you can even hear their influence in BCNR’s music.
Man, i have to say i just noticed but damn JD your audio quality on these videos with headphones is crystal clear bro, love it. Great record, amazing band, if you haven't done schlagenheim 100000% recommend!
Loved this reaction, Cavalcade is definitely an offputting experience on the first listen but it grew on me tremendously. One album I would absolutely love for you to listen to is Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes. It's an amazing indie folk album, everything about is gorgeous from the melodies, the atmosphere and the lyrics.
On first listen, cavalcade absolutely blew me away and made me feel like never before, it was one piece of mind-blowing instrumentation after the other, I sat with my mouth open on the train. It wasn't off-putting whatsoever but I can understand
Listen to Squid as well. I saw them live late last year and they're honestly maybe the best live act I've ever seen (up there with Muse live although different type of music). Saw Black Midi live as well but Squid clinched it for me. I'd recommend starting with their Town Center EP though. They've been compared a little bit to LCD Soundsystem but a lot more punk energy and more energetic. Arguably my favourite of the BCNR, Black Midi, Squid post punk British trinity at the moment just cause of their dancability although really depends on my mood which of them I prefer.
Hi Jon, Would you consider reacting to Spiderland or Twin Fantasy? Spiderland is post-rock and Twin Fantasy is slacker rock. They're both 10/10 albums imo. Also, Bright Green Field by Squid is another great British post-punk album that came out last year.
Squid is another UK band in the same wheelhouse at the moment - they released their debut record in 2021 along with Black Country. Some insane post-punk stuff going on right now
Something by Swans would be unreal. To Be Kind is amazing and notably received a 10 from Fantano. I’m certain you’d love it - though it is 2 hours long haha. Their album The Seer would be another great listen, or some of their older stuff like Soundtracks For The Blind.
LOVE seeing you get into the Windmill scene (named after a venue in Brixton that was a starting ground for both Black Country, New Road and black midi. Echoing the Godspeed You! Black Emperor suggestions - I think this is a reductive comparison, but I sometimes call Ants From Up There-era Black Country, New Road "Arcade Fire You! Black Emperor" - two very clear influences on the sound. And a great album from this year, Big Thief's Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You - really beautiful, folky stuff.
Really glad you made this channel, I found your stuff back when I only listened to hiphop but in the past couple years with this post-punk movement, rock has really stolen my heart. Black midi’s LP3 Hellfire will be releasing on July 15 this year and having heard almost all the new songs live, it’ll be their best release yet.
Some others have recommended Twin Fantasy by Car Seat Headrest and I agree that it scratches some of the same emotional vulnerability itch that Isaac’s lyrics for BCNR did.
It might be hard to grasp having only heard Cavalcade, but its actually way more understated and jazzy than their other album Schlagenheim, which is way more noisy math rock and in your face, and personally, having heard Schlagenheim you develop a better fondness for the singer than on Cavalcade- Listening to each of them compliments the other! Obviously i think that should be the next reaction then, because it would pair really well with this video :)
I've seen one or two other people mention this but I would definitely recommend Bright Green Field by Squid to kind of finish a sort of holy Trinity of this British post punk revival. There also many more newer great post punk acts such as Shame, Bambara, and Protomartyr.
Props for including Protomartyr. I’m surprised no one else mentioned them considering they’re arguably the most essential post-punk band of the last decade.
@@nathan4u it's crazy that they're still as generally less known as so many of their contemporaries. they're truly in their own lane and only getting better. would be incredible if Jon reacted to Ultimate Success Today or Relatives In Descent
Some recommendations since you asked: Schlagenheim - Black Midi Spiderland - Slint Man Alive! - King Krule Bright Green Field - Squid Hellfire - Black Midi (When it releases in July!)
I would love to see Schlagenheim, Black Midi's debut record. I would also love to hear your thoughts on Teens of Denial by Car Seat Headrest, thats one is easily one of of my favorite records of the 2010s. I think it would definitely resonate with you
Here’s some of my favourite rock tangential albums over the past few years. I’d never seen your previous reactions before but I love this new channel and your style of reaction. Cheers cobba. Jeff Rosenstock - Worry (US) 2016 Amyl and the Sniffers - Comfort to Me (Aus) 2021 Really From - Really From (US) 2021 Chubby and the Gang - Speed Kills (UK) 2020 The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention (Radiohead) 2022 PUP - The Dream is Over (Can) 2016 Blake Scott - Nitcham (Aus) 2020 Tropical Fuck Storm - A Laughing Death in Meatspace (Aus) 2018 Horsey - Debonair (UK) 2021 Otoboke Beaver - Itekoma Hits (Japan) 2019
Love this channel JD. I love the main channels content too but this content reminds me of what drew me to you in the first place, seeing a music lover's mind blown on first listen to great music
Man, if you loved Dethroned you're gonna be blown away by their other album Schlagenheim. It's got a similar thing going on with the mix of styles, but the overall sound is much more in line with Dethroned
I think Squid's debut Bright Green Field would be a great next album to check out. It continues with the same meld of post-punk and experimental rock with their own unique spin. In my eyes it was one of 2021's best albums and better than both Cavalcade and For the First Time.
Just watched your reactions to 'For The First Time' and 'Cavalcade', they're quite cool! These two albums were a lifesaver for me in 2021. It's 2023, and I still can't get enough of them. I think listening to King Crimson, Don Caballero and Godspeed You! Black Emperor prepares you to listen to this beautiful gem by black midi. If you're reacting to these stunning albums by black midi and Black Country, New Road, I think you outta react to a masterpiece that paved the way for this trend 10 years before. I'm meaning 'Hidden', the other wordly sophomore album by These New Puritans that took art rock to another level.
I'd love to see you become acquainted with Richard Dawson and I think his album "2020" would be the best place to start. Incredible storytelling songwriter, creating modern fables with his extraordinary voice and unique playing style. Once heard, never forgotten.
Would love to see you check out their debut Schlagenheim, absolutely insane record. Bright Green Field by Squid is also a worthy album to checkout as well. However my pick would have to be Swans. Definitely a more experimental band, who have existed since the 80's, but have gone through multiple member lineups and soundscapes. The trilogy of The Seer, To Be Kind, and The Glowing Man, is one of the most insane music listening experiences I've ever had. Heartily recommend, only if you can stomach the 2 hour album lengths.
You’ve got to listen to deathcrash!! Their new album came out earlier this year and they’re roughly associated with the BM/BCNR scene. Honestly such a stunning record I think you’d enjoy it
I know everyone’s already said it but listen to the debut black midi album if you can, it’s as good as this one in my opinion and also squid is a must listen if you are enjoying this so far. I’d start with the ‘town and centre’ ep
I love this album so much, I'm personally more of a fan of the debut though, definitely check that one out. I also second the guy recommending the new big thief album, AOTY for sure
It would be a great idea to dive into Black Midi's first album Schlagenheim now that you've heard this. It is much more stripped back and aggressive but still just as impactful IMO. They also have a new album called Hellfire that is releasing on July 15 which will be a great reaction I'm sure. EDIT: I would also love to see some classic rock reactions like Aja by Steely Dan or Remain In Light by Talking Heads if you've yet to hear them.
Don't feel bad for not emotionally connecting with the songs like you do with BCNR, I don't even know if its possible for anyone to connect more emotionally with Black Midi than BCNR purely down to their mode of operation, lyrical content and delivery. (People can certainly prefer BM but that's besides my point.) BM can sure as hell make you feel just as strongly in a sense of phwwaaa, this is really good, this is beautifully composed and arranged and technically mind blowing and intense but I don't think it's designed to scratch that same traditionally 'emotional' itch. It's like the difference between Radiohead and Meshugga. So don't feel like you're missing out and maybe don't wait to 'unlock' the emotion behind the songs because i'm not sure it will ever come. One thing I would say black midi do unbelievably well when it comes to their lyrics is their ability to portray vivid imagery. I don't think i've ever imagined a more crazy, unique or vivid scene than the one in John L. But anyway, this 'being taken away somewhere' sensation you touch upon in the video, that's the sensation I would continue to delve into, as well as unpacking all the instrumental layers and unpacking any sense you can from the chaos across each listen. To continue down this rabbit hole you've got to listen to Black Midi's first album Schlagenheim or Squids Bright Green Fields next. I also think you would really enjoy ...Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stoneage if you fancy a change of pace for a bit.
I'd love to see you react to "Sinner Get Ready" by Lingua Ignota if you could. It's a pretty horrifying listen but it's also very beautiful. I'd recommend having a little look at the context of the album before going in to get the most out of it
I'd love to see you react to king krule!! You'll love his stuff, a bit of indie, jazz, and post-punk with a really unique voice and noir-ish aesthetic. He's got 3 albums at the moment and i think they're all fantastic. Loving this new channel, I'm here for everything u got in store!
Here we go. Schlagenheim needs to happen now - probably would've been better to go Schlagenheim into Cavalcade but I'm not complaining. As for suggestion, let's just go with a real heavy hitter off rip: Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F♯ A♯ ∞ , the debut rom '97, followed by Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven from 2000. Two masterpiece albums back to back, honestly two of the greatest musical expressions of the last 50 years. They came out the gates fully-formed.
BCNR just played a few shows for the first time since Isaac left and it still sounded absolutely fantastic! Some other members did the vocals and it sounds amazing

Please Do their previous record Schlagenheim! Love your work 🙂

Now it’s definitely time for Bright Green Field by Squid to complete my holy Windmill trinity of 2021.
Beyond everyone's great recommendations thus far, I'd also point out Crumbling by Mid-Air Thief, an astonishingly dreamy neo-psychedelic album

EDIT: I would also love to see some classic rock reactions like Aja by Steely Dan or Remain In Light by Talking Heads if you've yet to hear them.
do Idles Ultra Mono next, its their best album imo, fire reaction and great channel, keep up the good work
tight knit community TBE
Like Clockwork is so fucking good
@@jens2049 Ain't it just, the music videos are top notch too
I'd love to see you react to "Sinner Get Ready" by Lingua Ignota if you could.
