    Something special about cassette decks for me, the look, the fluorescent VU meters moving, the clunk of the cassettes as they go into the transport mechanisms, the soft eject mechanism. But I was an 80s kid, so I did grow up with tapes. I have a Technics RS B33W cassette deck and never had any issues with it since buying it 2 years ago.

      Thank you ! Watching vu meters, fluo , real needles or leds is fun , i don’t understand why they never put them on CD players is the aesthetics would be fantastic. Most cassette decks just require regular maintenance and maybe a belt , but as long as they are used they will run. Sitting idle is what kills them

Nope, didn't work too good as the freakin' noise drowned out the music or I hadda have it so loud it was uncomfortable for me and other pissed-off straphangers. It did work well while travelin' on Amtrak. My Walkman 4 had inputs for two headphones so me and my girl could listen together. 12:17 "The double flywheel also causes higher W&F" - if that is the case then your unit must be defective because the main idea of a dual capstan mechanism is to reduce W&F. Both the 880 and the 1100 have Nakamichi / Sankyo sourced mechanisms. But the 1100 was the TOTL and intended to better the 880 in any respect.

    • @cassettedeck-walkman-repair
      @cassettedeck-walkman-repair  11 дней назад

      @@mihaischitcu1917 the dual capstan is needed to improve the tape path which is needed for 3 head decks to ensure proper azimuth, but more moving rotating parts also are causing a bit more w&f
      The 880 has the same sankyo transport with DD motor as the 1100 (and the naks ) but the single motor is better for w&f than the motor + belt + extra flywheel
      And the 1100 is indeed better in some aspects but not mechanically , and the difference is 0.005 to 0.01 % w&f measurable , the 1100 is the same as the naks but w&f the 880 is better

    • @mihaischitcu1917
      @mihaischitcu1917 10 дней назад +2

      @@cassettedeck-walkman-repair Your particular 880 may be better than your particular 1100 but this is not the case in general. "the single motor is better for w&f than the motor + belt + extra flywheel" - again, not generally true, especially since they use different diameters for "diffused resonance". The dual capstan design's main benefit is the isolation of tape tension variations as it comes off the supply reel and through the cassette guides from the tension around the heads. It also provides near-constant tension throughout the length of the tape. This in turn mainly benefits flutter and head contact. "Proper azimuth" is generally not a direct consequence or factor. Dual capstan designs are not directly associated with 3 head designs. There are many 3 head single capstan drives, and some 2 head dual capstan drives (mostly Nakamichi)

      @phaenius 9 дней назад

      @@cassettedeck-walkman-repair Companies spent a lot of time and money in researching and implementing the closed loop dual capstan. Why'd they do it if it added more w&f? Maybe after all those years, decks get out of alignment and if not properly tuned, this system can do worse than single capstan transport, but when it's working as it should, it's clearly better.

    • @cassettedeck-walkman-repair
      @cassettedeck-walkman-repair  9 дней назад +1

      @@phaenius it clearly has some benefits , like a more stable tape path and more stable azimuth. but everytime i compare (and compared) the single capstan DD motor Sankyo transport to the same transport with double capstan/flywheel the single capstan outperforms the double mechanically (W&F) . now dont get me wrong, the differences i am talking about won't be audible but they are certainly measurable . and the reasons why i pick the single 880 over the 1100 is cost (2 head machines are typically cheaper than 3 heads) serviceability (no capstan belt on the 880) the sound quality in on par with the 1100 and the mechanical specs. back in the day I also found that, for example, KX-7030 runs better (lower W&F) with the left pinchroller disabled , basically making it a single capstan machine. i will see if i can do a test with the 1100 and the 880 , compare and even make the 1100 a single capstan and measure before and after

    i want to refer that having three kenwood decks all record with a higher quality , not a single deck from nakamichi as i have all top end models . Since at least 78 they do record with a higher quality but that one was in a cheap system from the 80´s , don´t know if it was sold separated . A friend of mine had at home bought by his father a total plastic compact system with a even worst looking cassette deck but one day i played a cassette from him thinking it would have been recorded in it´s old Crown 70´s system who was very good but no it was recorded in the even worst looking kenwood deck and it sounded with a higher quality of sound not that high the level of recording as it didn´t had rec level(that one at least that as it) but with quality , kenwwod always surprised me for it´s cassette decks and a receiver i had in the 70´s with timer also a turntable and speakers, that was really good ,i even bought for my car in mid 80´s a radio cassette player from kenwood, that was so good that i only took it from one of my old cars in 97 when i bought cheap a new minidisc car audio from Sony. Sorry but there is not such a thing as good double cassette decks, my opinion only ,i had a Sony that recorded in both decks but that was it, allthough if i had seen that i would buy it instead of a SONY, YAMAHA at least it´s a good brand in everything they do ,i had motos ,hi-fi system from the 70´s all was fine, still have it , the control amplifier is not audiophile friendly because it as all functions one could imagine it´s a C1 ,i think, one can level all sources as it as for each input in the back a litle volume knob , the K-540 still have it working but in black. see the kenwood 880 HK or similar was a surprising good deck and with the Amourphous heads fashion of the 80´s with calibration was sold till 96 with a 1000 reference and open/close instead of eject, the yamaha from the 70´s it even as "designed by...." signature deck?is it?you´re right the post 2000 decks are garbage but there are tascam decks with a higher quality of sound it´s a professional brand from which brand? am i thinking of TEAC?also great the Z-5000 is amazing good and the 6030 (semi-professional )and V-7000 are very good. That Marantz exists branded Harman-Kardon and Philips, as this last brand owned the previous ones and Philips that i know of since late 60´s till today had a great hi-fi quality including both brands refered and Grundig also had some components with a very high qiality including fine arts, owned by philips also ,that marantz or harman kardon or philips as they existed with the same design sounded like late 70´s or 79 F series from Philips wich is still very good today ,i still am using my 79 F series system, only 79 after they decreased a lot the F series or in 1980 when all brands decreased their components quality, the next Yamaha i´m not going to talk about it as it as auto-reverse, also i see you using a pre-recorded casettes and no one i ever knew bought them only in holidays so one can hear a just released Lp like me since early 70´s till today but 7 and was in holidays when i did it ,some even sound very good but with the years they destroy themselves i think polydor made them good but i was playing a the who Lp in cassette the first after the drumer died and and rewinding it it broke, the second i bought was also real good sounding but in early 80´s in a minute would dirt the play/record head ,was the first Boston LP, the 90´s 7030 from kenwood is amazing good but some have a problem that when it´s playing it stops for no reason i think it´s related with the counter like some older AIWA decks that a belt was conected to the counter and the stop at the end of the cassette was when the counter stoped ,i might be wrong as mine was stoped and now is doing that but i didn´t had the time to check it, it´s related with the auto-stop system maybe. About the play trim it´s handy but the 90´s flex from pioneer worked better, the yamaha with amourphous heads i did had good ones that one could notice improvement in sound using the Amorphous heads but when played in a regular decks normally the model under the high´s have a kind of vibration only in the high´s ,this refering to pionee CT-959 and CT-979 and CT-93 also the Denon DRM-800a(very good ,but coloured sound and no calibration but love it anyway,after they didn´t make them this good again but good anyway) with the DRM-700a(89)not using them amourphous heads i notice recorded in the others a distortion on high frequencies, the 1100 was the younger brother from the 90´s of the HK-880 like i refer ,as i have the 7030 and not the 9030, because i bought the 1100 with more modern fatures but all were good, about AKAI i thought they were the better recording tapes after in 1970 having a new version crossfield X-165D that works perfect today and later bought a 78 GX-4000DS sold till 82 or 84 the open reel deck but i had the GX-630D and the GX-9 , and in 92 i bought as a second deck maybe that one GX-32(others also bought them in the 80´s)

    Yes, the Marantz SD-60 is same as Philips FC-60; the Revox C-115 adds balanced I/O but that's the only difference. I concur that the transport is very good for a middle-of-the-line 3-head deck (mine, originally for Japanese domestic market, still runs flawlessly with original rubber). But it's an ergonomical nightmare, especially for people with imperfect eyesight and dexterity. The main controls are too small and awkwardly placed. In real life I'd rather use a junior Yamaha (I still have model K-340, similar to your K-300 but without bias adjustment). My favourite Yamaha, however, is the 2-head model K-960, aka k-1d in Japan. Decent transport and superb looks - a transition from silver 70s to black 80s with a nostalgic green fluorescent meter.

    That KX-1200 looks identical to the K-1020, with the exception of the KX-1200 having a wireless remote control and the K-1020 having a wired remote control.

    I just found your channel and immediately subscribed.
    I have a JVC KD-V6 I bought new many years ago. Unfortunately, I think it needs belts, and the left channel doesn’t work. When turned on the level meter shows a steady signal, but no sound. I bought a service manual but I feel trying to repair it is beyond my abilities. Sadly, no one here in the Dallas area is doing cassette repairs.
    Thanks for the great video.
