cassette deck and walkman repairs
Нидерланды
Добавлен 24 май 2024
my name is Rene, from 1985 to 1999 I used to repair in and out of warranty cassette decks and walkmans for Kenwood, Yamaha , Pioneer, Sanyo and other brands and with the current increasing interest in analog audio, and cassette decks in particular, I started this channel to share tips and tricks that I have picked up over the years.
I will mostly do 'end-to-end' video's about repairing, servicing and adjusting the deck from beginning to end with a lot of talking , showing , tips etc and very little editing.
If you have any questions or particular video's you would like to see just reach out and maybe I can assist ?

Maybe you can tell me the correct capstan belt size?
Another good video. Thanks Nice deck but not at the level of the kx1100/kx9010. There was also a kx4520 which I thought was better. But they are not top. Plastic Fantastic😉
@JohnFoto-m8x I totally agree !
Excellent video, appreciate your well explained video. I do have one problem I wonder if you could give me some advice with. I have a Kenwood KX 67W duel cassette deck for my home stereo that I picked up at a thrift store. The problem I'm having is when I push the power button, the until with automatically power on and both cassette decks will both start spinning at the capstan rod. If I push stop on either deck, nothing changes, the both just keep spinning on both decks. Any advice would greatly be appreciated, thank you !
@@Gauntlet1985 thats normal with these decks on power on the motor start as well
@cassettedeck-walkman-repair Thanks for your reply, glad to hear that. Personally that's the first time I've ever owned a cassette player that does that.
Rule of thumb: record 65db s/n, tape 75 db s/n, cd 96 db s/n - just buy cd’s and be happy.
On the azimuth adjustment the right or "red" channel is a bit larger than the green. Is this normal or is it just a mis calibration from the scope? The close up on the head seemed it appeared there was a little wear as there is a slight flattening on the head but even with this wear should it still be equal wear to both channels that shouldn't cause the azimuth to show a little higher output to the right (red) as the head wear should effect both channels the same?
I love my 952!
Ebay has a "Block Buyer" page I would highly suggest giving this guy a good comfortable spot there. It's people like this that ruin the Ebay selling experience. Don't let yourself get caught in this mess again selling to this "*******" my friend. Your work is phenomenal from the videos I have watched you do a very professional jobs at repairs on these decks.
thank you for your kind words !
If I buy a deck in the future, I will come to you first because of this video.

i didn't recap though D: just replaced relays only. i was told it wasn't neccessary! i'm a bit new to the electronics side and finding the right parts though, but wish to learn. how do you find equivalent caps to get and such? is there a resource i can read perhaps? thanks!

@@thembinkosidube3918 thank you !
You welcome,
No Harman Kardon?
Your opinion on the cassette deck of your choice was definitely biased 😄
Really ? 🤣
Thanks for creating this video. If I can add my specific experience is that the single most important thing to lubricate in ageing cassette decks is the capstan motor front bushing, it can make a huge difference in vibrations, IM noise and current requirement. Also it's quite often the case that I can find jammed parts (for dried hardened up old grease). The other part that cannot really be overlooked is how to properly clean the capstan shaft and how to judge a pinch roller. The capstan shaft should be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud if the oxide isn't stuck to the shaft, it makes the process much easier as it will rub instead of slipping atop the oxide dirt, if the deck has had oxide left in there for years the shaft needs to be polished with steel wool. A hard worn out pinch roller will likely give flutter to the playback, while a flat spot caused by prolonged (days, months, years) contact with the capstan rod will likely cause wow. The pinch roller must be scrubbed from side to side exactly how you show in your video, preferably with isopropyl alcohol. It can also be treated with softening and cleaning fluids that are commercially available. I notice you didn't mention anything about the back tension which in the Kenwood deck of your video seems to be provided by a slipping strip much like a VHS brake. It is essential that the supply hub offers some resistance while turning as a non properly tensioned tape will inevitably spill at the capstan. On closed loop dual capstan machines that tension is offered by the closed loop design of the 2nd (supply) capstan and pinch roller.
Nice work, just start joining your channel👌👍
@@romaanaa thank you kind person !
The Akai GX32 was my holy grail deck. Didn't look flashy either. 😉👍
Recently bought a 2nd hand Technics midi hifi SH-eh500 but the tapedeck RS-EH600 doesn't play a tape. You press play but it stops almost immediately. Previous owner said it was not used for years. If you press play it play for a second. Turn the head over as if the tape is at end of side then stop. Ans the band is pulled out a bit. Those 2 black that sticks. What you think is faulty. Thx
killer video, thanks for this. I have a Marantz PMD 360, when I got it, it was playing but I needed to clean the volume pots which got it working just fine...it crapped out the other day and now the take up reel won't run when I hit play, the speaker seemed to be going as well. I'm a little nervous to open it up because I don't want to mess it up further but this video was great with some pointers. Any chance you've taken a PMD 360 apart before? Any other tips?
Anything without Sendust Alloy heads, forget it. Anything else sounds like mud in comparison, no matter who made it.
Great video! Going to be following along on my own 125e I picked up with the same issue
Hi , I need help, I was using my old cassette player, I change a tape but one of the pinch roller is in up position, and now it doesn’t want to start play wing/turning, the roller is firmly in up position
Great video! I’m dealing with a rewind problem on a Sansui SC-3100. All belts replaced, everything works except rewind. Looks as though the torque is low in the rewind mode. Is replacing the tires on the idler wheel the only solution? The SM does not mention the size and I don’t want to make a mistake in ordering the wrong size. If you know what the tire sizes are for the two idler wheel tires and the spool tires (left & right) and can share that, it would be awesome. Thank you again!

Im looking for the Pioneer Elite CT-93.
Can you reccomend a "3 head cassette deck" that allows you to monitor tape out, as well as the input like you could in some of the old reel to reels.. thx...
Hello there, and thankyou very much for your video. I have a pioneer dc-92 that i have rescued from my attic and neither tape decks are happy. Before i take it apart and investigate could you please recommend a company that sells quality rubber belts for this in UK or Europe please. I want to sell this machine on as it is in fantastic condition after reading an article on the BBC website that stuff like this is now in huge demand?!?! Hence me going into attic to retrieve mine! The record deck had a melted yukky band in it and i have ordered a new one of these, and i am guessing the tape decks have a similar fate, but i am yet to open the machine up yet. It has been in a box in my attic since the late 80's early 90's!! Wish me luck!!
@@neiladkins6726 thank you for your kind words , in the video description i have a few good belt sources in various continents, please have a look at those and good luck with the repair !

@@mike311271 have the caps been replaced ? Those are problematic in naks

I was thinking of going with the Tascam 322 but after this video I’m looking at the Yamahas. I want to duplicate my tapes in the best audio quality. Do you think it’s worth getting the tascam or would u go with a Yamaha deck ?
@@jorgechaydez5918 yamaha all day long !
Excellent video
You mentioned that the KX--55W has the same transport as the KX-44 and some others- any idea if it matches to the KX-59W? I have been unable to find a manual for the 59W specifically, and even searching on a Russell Industries PRB Cross guide, I cannot find any confirmation of exactly what belts the 59W uses, as far as I can tell from the video it looks almost exactly the same though?
I myself bought a Yamaha KX580 Special Edition in 1998. I still have this deck and it is completely original, but it still works great. Considering the type of cassette deck: A single deck without autoreverse, I think this is one of the last seriously built decks. This has everything from Dolby: HX-PRO headroom expander and B, C and S noise reduction. This deck also has a 160khz erase frequency which further reduces the noise floor and this machine also has automatic calibration. Unique is the Play-trim with which you can bring old music cassettes completely to life. Playback with Dolby without sounding dull or pumping. One of the best features is the remote control, recording from the comfort of my chair. In terms of sound quality, this deck leaves the Akai HX27W far behind. When you consider how much better this Akai is compared to the new decks, I don't even want to compare my Yamaha deck to that newfangled crap. That's just not a fair comparison...
Hi, I just wanted to record a song using my JVC KD-W55 cassette deck, but the song didn't appear, instead there was noise. Then I tried touching the button with my hand and the noise decreased. Is there something wrong with the ground wire connection or is there something broken with other components? Thanks.
Your my savior!😊

I bought a cassette deck from E Bay last week that was checked out and tested as working. When I plugged it in and turned it on the transport was dead. Also, the right Vu meter was jumping around uncontrollably. The seller paid to send it back. You have to be careful about buying tape decks on E bay. I have now bought two tape decks that "tested good" that had serious problems right out of the box. One sent back and the other one a like new Tascam I am going to have repaired if possible as I can't figure out what is wrong with it. One tape deck a Sony I bought worked fine for about two weeks then had belt slippage. Which can happen in older tape decks. I was expecting it at some point but was a little early. So I don't mind replacing the belts as otherwise it works great.
40-50 year old gear can be a hit and misss , luckily there are still techs "out there" that can repair and service , thank you for your comments !
Great helpful video, I have Nakamichi 700, i is eating tapes, i just learn that it need idler, for many years i am not using its, right now i am using Nakamichi DR8 fantastic machine. Thanks alot for your time and efforts.
thank you for your kind words !
I replaced all of the timing-related resistors and capacitors around the Dolby B/C and HX Pro ICs in my 3-head Teac V-1050 with 1% metal film resistors and matched pairs of 5% WIMA film capacitors and Dolby tracking accuracy improved dramatically. Definitely a job well worth doing.
well done !
The last cassette deck for sale in my region worth buying was the 1998 3-head Teac V-1050 that had a fairly decent Alps mechanism in it. I was lucky enough to pick one up in an end-of-line clearance sale for £150 brand new. I believe they sold for around twice that when launched. Mine has a measured 0.045% WRMS and good tape path stability for a simple single capstan deck. After a minor reworking of the recording and playback electronics, it's flat within 1dB from 20Hz to 20kHz with a cheap TDK FE Type I tape when using Dolby C. I certainly wouldn't touch any recent Teac cassette decks with a bargepole. They're all total crap now. A 50+ year reputation flushed down the toilet. Such a pity.
So I have one of these and I am getting no audio out. The belts, while old, still spin the tape. I tried deoxit on the rca connectors but no change. Neither tape a or b get any sound. I assume this is something electrical but would welcome any advice on how to troubleshoot / where to start. Thanks!
are you sure the rca cables are good and connected correctly (line out on the deck to line in on the amp)
Thanks for the info, I'm still missing some decks. Kenwood kx 5010/9010 are also top decks👍bedankt voor de video
I have a 880hx and 5010/9010 myself. With such a beautiful Sankyo drive I also had deadspot problems. But that can be solved👍
@ dead spot op de reel motor is (helaas) een bekend probleem, suc6 met herstellen !
I will tell you I bought a cheap one that was never used in the system they did radio and record. I will tell you it sounds really good and not sure how cheap it was made but it's the best $10 bucks I have spent on a basically new tape player. CT W250. I will use this until it breaks then upgrade. I use it just for listening.
