  • My interpretation of The Day Begins & Dawn, which comprise the first 4 tracks of The Moody Blues’ second Album, “Days of Future Passed”, released in November 1967.
In September of that year, The Moody Blues were asked by their record label to record an adaptation of Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 as a stereo demonstration record for a newly created division. Instead, the band chose to record an orchestral song cycle about a typical working day.
The album is cited as a precursor to progressive rock music.
Some critics remarks regarding the album include, the band "created an entire genre here." David Fricke cites it as one of the essential albums of 1967 and finds it "closer to high-art pomp than psychedelia. But there is a sharp pop discretion to the writing and a trippy romanticism in the mirroring effect of the strings and Mike Pinder's Mellotron." Will Hermes cites the album as an essential progressive rock record and views that its use of the Mellotron, a tape replay keyboard, made it a "signature" element of the genre. An influential work of the counterculture period, Allmusic editor Bruce Eder calls the album "one of the defining documents of the blossoming psychedelic era, and one of the most enduringly popular albums of its era."
    The Moody Blues:
    • Mike Pinder - mellotron, piano, tambura, vocals, (including spoken)
    • Ray Thomas - flutes, percussion, vocals
    • Justin Hayward - acoustic & electric guitars, piano, sitar, vocals
    • John Lodge - bass, vocals
    • Graeme Edge - drums, percussion, vocals
    • Peter Knight - Conductor, arrangements
    • The London Festival Orchestra
    The Day Begins:
"The Day Begins" (Peter Knight & The Moody Blues)
"Morning Glory" (Graeme Edge) [Unlisted track]
    Dawn:
    (Intro) (Peter Knight) [Unlisted track]
"Dawn Is a Feeling" (Mike Pinder)

The words of "Graeme Edge", who just passed away yesterday(11/12/21) at 80 years old. He will be hugely missed. He was the ONLY member who was in the band from its conception until its end....his passing BEING the cause of the band's very final end. Sad.

I'm sorry to take so long to get back to you. This is Ralph, Nick's lifelong friend. Nick passed away two and a half years ago while dancing with his fiancé. It was a shocking and unexpected loss. Though I do not have access to his account... I try and answer appropriate messages. He and I went to see the MBs 5 times and he went to their concerts more than two dozen times. He was a musician, playing in coffee houses, but he loved the MBs more than any other performers. He had one more video completed and was just cleaning it up when he died. The video was Nights in White Satin. I'd looked at some of the preliminaries and it would have been his best content ever. Thank you for appreciating his creativity and his love for the Moody Blues... --Ralph

My personal email is ragnarook@hotmail.com if you wish to communicate privately. Ralph W. Emerson is my privacy driven nom de plume. I've always been surprised that Nick's MB videos did not go a bit more viral than 6-12 thousand views. He loved framing an imagistic interpretation of the journey of the lyrics and melody and it was great to sort of see the Moody's music through his mind's eye. It's a very different perspective to experience Visions of Paradise with just the music and stationary pictures of Justin v. watching Nick's version and watching the images. Because it all began with silence, then there was the subharmonic wave that formed time and space. Have you ever listened to the first sound of the universe? Rather plaintive sound with no subharmonic hum... that’s because it was moving beyond the lonely little sound, the subharmonic wave was forming time and space. Here, listen and be in awe of the sound not heard... awe be praise and beauty and has no fear...
