An Honest Review of the Genesis "Last Domino" Tour. Sigh...

  • In this video I discuss the disappointment that was "The Last Domino" tour by progressive rock band Genesis. Genesis is one of my favorite bands of all time but Phil Collins' diminished vocal ability pretty much ruined the show for me.

I didn't read your review and don't need to. However, I agree with whatever you said. How can a band as huge as this sign off with making a complete arse of themselves on stage? It's unbelievable. The guy can dance, the guy can't sing, he just sittin' there sellin' his thing - and I ain't buyin" I'm really disappointed they would even think about doing this.

The London shows just happened, I went to all three.
Night 1 Phil needed to warm up - got really into it half way through the gig.
Night 2 he was hot on the first half but it faded after Duchess (sorry of that's some form of spoiler)
Night 3 was emotional from start to finish. Not one dry eye in the entire room. The final send off.
The band promised one last tour. They delivered.
Are they a collective of 70 year old men? Yes. Is it a miracle to even have seen them perform? Yes.
I waited 15 years for last week end. I have to say, it was worth the wait.
If anything - I've learnt something from these gigs: our bodies break down, and we lose the ability to do the things we once could, but music is forever.
I'll carry those nights - this tour, no matter the opinion to my grave as I was there at the farewell of one of the greatest bands of all time.
That comes above all quality if you ask me.

I’m a huge Genesis fan and I always wanted to see them live with my son and this tour made it happen. I was very happy to see them and they sounded great. Of course they are not in their prime anymore and Phil cannot jump and run around the stage like he used to but so what? For us die-hard fans, it’s always great to see them on the stage.

I can respect your opinion; but when you upload the video on RUclips for all public to see, you will hear all sort of different “opinions”.
I mean think about their age and look around you. Do you know anyone in their 70’s doing what they do? On the world tour since last September, getting on/off the plane, deal with jet-lag, rehearsals, on the stage for over two hours for each shows. At least I don’t know anyone that tough in their age group.
Most of us fans knew Phil’s conditions before purchasing the ticket. I don’t regret a minute of paying for the show and will do it again.

It's was completely different when immersed into the live production vs watching a crappy video and hearing crappy audio. Were there misses? Yes. Did any of them spoil it for me? But watching it and hearing it on video is pretty brutal because it presents the audio objectively. With all that being said I would still love to see them if they came anywhere near Florida but of course they’re not going to do that because they apparently hate the south as was seen from their last tour in 2007

I 100% agree with you man has a huge fan of Genesis and Phil Collins. Phil was one of my idols who inspired me to play drums coming out of high school. His music inspired me for many years and his live promises were absolutely breathtaking. But phil is at a point now to where he barely can't even sing or hit a high note if he wanted to when I saw a clip on RUclips of Phil doing his famous tambourine dance at the last Domino tour I nearly almost teared up because he looked like he was falling apart especially due to the fact that he used to be on point with that dance back in the day. I mean the man is 71 now and he already looks 95 if anything so should I have called it quits back in 2007 when he was still agile and energetic. But of course legal troubles alcoholism and near suicide drove him back to doing shows again. It's really really sad in my opinion to see one of the best Prog bands to ever exist turn into a nursing home show for the elderly.

Johan eights I feel the exact same way my friend. When I saw some clips on RUclips it was absolutely ridiculous like I said Phil looks terrible and he really shouldn't be out there. I'd rather live with the memories of when Phil was great back in the seventies and eighties and nineties instead of looking at him now where he can't even walk that good.. And like you said he looks like hes 95 years old. Just terrible and sad and it sucks when your heroes get old and frail.
It happened to the drummer alan white from yes who just passed away recently. He was 73 and he looked horrible in the last few years of his life an absolute shame he was a great drummer. He was in a wheelchair and he lost weight and looked terrible. You should know when it's time to step down and realize it and go out with some dignity. Some people age well and some don't unfortunately.

23:30 My goodness, “Invisible Touch” was tuned down a FOURTH (five semitones, or five “keys” as you call it). HOnestly, this is heartbreaking to watch. And I now understand better than ever why Rush (one of my other favorite bands) called it quits in 2015 - when Neil Peart (RIP, he was already ill at that point though this was kept quiet) could still with great effort play flawlessly. He simply decided that he was no longer able to perform at the level their audience deserved.

I completely disagree. While Phil's vocal ability was diminished, HE was incredible, in my mind better than ever. I left the concert feeling inspired. Phil's been through A LOT, and I was impressed that he, Tony, Mike and co. were able to pull off these performances at such a high level. I believe that the band is performing for all the right reasons, and I wish them nothing but the best. Will I buy the live album? Of course not. (I really doubt there will be one.) But for me, sound wasn't really the point. It was more about the performance and seeing these guys one final time. And Phil gave an amazing performance, particularly given his current constraints.

I can imagine it being sad for a lot of people but I totally disagree on the word ‘embarrassing’. And I think we should not compare this show to their earlier shows. We KNOW they’re far from their prima but the show in itself is still great. Also, I think about the word sad in a different way. This tour showcases the inevitability of time. For the people who has performed all their life it’s hard to accept that part of their life is over, but it’s inevitable. I absolutely adore the fact that Phil is passing on, or at least trying, the sticks (and the music) to his son, which is also a beautiful gesture fitting in the ‘inevitability of time’ thought. All in all I think 2007 would have been a great final farewell tour, but as the band members say, they didn’t feel like it was a final farewell. So to let them have this final farewell, and close the book in London later on, is a great thing to have in my opinion.

I was at a 2019 concert in Hannover, Germany. Of course, I also recognized the decline of his voice, but voices are changing, and Phil is kinda old now, so it was not very suprising that he didn't reach the level he used to. Also, it depended on the song: While "Another day in paradise" sounded really good, the Genesis classic "Land of confusion" which he also played sounded not that good. And yes, when I compare some songs he sang in older live appearances, it's obviously not the same anymore, in example comparing "Against all odds" from the 1985 Live Aid version with the version of the 2019 concert. But to be fair, he used to be a really good live singer back then, and he was okay when I was there. I am also glad that I saw him. Greetings from Germany! :)

You make some valid points, but I disagree. This is the band saying goodbye. Full stop. None of these frontmen from this era can do what they once did. Maybe the dude from Styx and Jon Anderson from Yes. Billy Joel is an absolute joke nowadays, even Peter Gabriel can do it anymore. I am a professional singer and teacher of singing and I like to use an analogy of a major league pitcher. There are only so many fast balls in the gun. That applies to high notes. At first it was disconcerting seeing him singing slumped in a chair-and not a very comfortable looking one at that-but his spirits seemed to be good. I would have loved to have caught a show on the tour. Maybe it’s not The Last Domino. If Phil’s back and leg issues improve, who knows how he will feel about hitting the road again. I saw them many times going back to Earls Court London in 1977, and the last show I saw was the 2007 tour in Amsterdam which was outstanding. Phil was brilliant on the Turn It On Again tour 2007 running all over the place, the deterioration in his health from 2007 is quite shocking. I didn't go to the Last Domino Tour, as I knew it would be like this. The last tour just wasn't the same too without Chester and Phil drumming together (even though Nic is a brilliant drummer, and did a good job). One of the classic Genesis songs live was Afterglow when Phil would bring the song to crescendo, and go back on the drums with Chester for the massive outro, it was just so flat on this tour and didn't work at all. If fans want to see some classic Genesis, Steve Hackett is still touring and doing all the Genesis classics with a superb band. We all wish Phil well, but feel it would now be totally impossible to get the Classic Five lineup back together ever again, as Phil cannot drum anymore, and the sands of time have gone too far. I agree with you sadly, but we all with Phil well with his recovery.

I went to Chicago to see them, got some 5th row floor seats. I grew up listening to these guys and hadn't had a chance to see them yet. Yeah, Phil didn't sound very good but I expected that and I still had a great time being there. Very grateful that I got that last chance to see them live. It was one of my bucket list items, see Genesis live.
But objectively speaking, yeah it was a sad performance by Phil. This is a tour that, if you went to the show and are a massive Genesis fan and already knew his voice sucks now, you would have loved being there. It's not a tour that anybody will enjoy watching on RUclips.
You got the feeling at the show that Phil was still really enjoying doing one last tour for his son and the fans, he seemed very appreciative of all the people that came out and had a blast interacting with the audience like he always had. He was getting very emotional at times.
But I agree 100% that the setlist is super stale by now. I wanted some fresh stuff. This isn't 1992 anymore, almost anybody who was at the show was an old-school, long-time fan and they wanted more deep cuts instead of the tired old hits that are just... okay songs. Not great songs. If they were going to just give us the same old stuff, I at least wanted In The Cage like they always did, but I suppose Phil can't do that anymore.
I also would have rather had NO BACKUP SINGERS, that's such a weird thing to see at a Genesis show. I'd have rather Phil sing the lines poorly or even skip notes he can't hit entirely than have backup singers.

And invite Peter, Steve & even Anthony along for the ride for a classic 70's set. Also invite Phil's other son Simon to help with lead vocals on the 80's/90's stuff with Phil doing the songs he can perform the best & then all on stage together for the final part doing a best of the eras set. Just my ideas but boy it would have been good to hear Peter belting out "Watcher of the skies" "Back in NYC" & "Supper's ready" again & Steve's classic solo in "Firth of Fifth". But this last tour, with Phil in such poor health, and poor form, was just not something I wanted to see, or hear. To pay to see him in such a frail, desperate condition, unable to stand, unable to sing, was just wrong to me. And without Chester Thompson, that was another reason to skip it. I would rather watch my Live at Wembly DVD, my Live Over Europe 2007 DVD, or listen to Three Sides Live, and remember how great Genesis were, and Phil was. I'm so glad I didn't go to see them, pay all that money, endure a terrible show and pretend I liked it afterwards. Last time I saw them with Phil was 1st July 1987. Wembley Stadium, 1st night of 4. Let _that_ be the memory. Their career peak. Not their artistic peak of course - but their career peak. It's obvious from the lukewarm audience reactions that it was an expensive endurance test. I wouldn't even have seen them in 2007. Or even 1992. They were already past it by then IMO.

I saw them back in November in Toronto. I must admit then when I heard about them doing the Last Domino tour I cringed myself. Not so much because of Banks and Rutherford, but mostly for Phil as when he was doing his solo comeback tour in 2019 his health had declined further and the tour had to be cancelled.
The reason I went was because I never saw Genesis and always wanted to. It was a once and a lifetime experience and a big part of me knew I would never have the opportunity to do so again. It was the best day of this past year for me as I felt the show was like being in a time machine travelling back to my childhood.
As much as I wish I could disagree with you in regards to Phil needing to stop performing, I know it would be foolish to do so. I was nevertheless happy to see him perform regardless and he wasn't as bad as I expected him to be. I really loved the lighting for every song they did and Rutherford, Banks, and Nick were amazing. Wish I could have been there in London this past week to see their last show.

But music is his life and doing concerts is his passion. I agree with you, that his voice is thinner now and obviously has less range. You can blame him for that. But you shouldn't blame him for having fun and enjoying himself.

Phil and Genesis were the soundtrack of my life in the 80s and 90z. I saw both live in Washington DC. Best live performances ever, ever, ever and I’ve been to tons of concerts. Sadly, Phil has deteriorated so quickly and badly that he is not able to perform. I thought the 2007 Live in Rome concert was good but Phil was losing it then. Drinking himself almost to death really destroyed his body. You are right about this concert being a huge disappointment. Sometimes people aren’t self aware and don’t know when it’s time to quit. I still listen to Phil and Genesis daily and watch Live at Wembley all the time. That was their and Phil’s best concert ever. Sadly Phil looks and sounds like he’s 91 even though he’s 72 and the same age as Mike and Tony. I prefer my heroes as they were and not as they are today. Thanks for sharing your feelings.

I SO wanted to see him, having not seen him prior for 6 months or so. We asked at the funeral home but they said the autopsy work (the poor guy was only 43 when he died! So he needed an autopsy due to younger age. His father had died at 45, his grandfather also at 45!) and length of time that had passed that he no longer looked 'good' so we (his missus and me) weren't allowed to. His missus at one point goes to the toilet/bathroom. The second she went out the room i was trying to prise the coffin lid up, knowing that the sight would be horrendous. When his missus returned she then did the same, trying to prise that lid up! Lucky for both of us the lid had been screwed down.

I loved Genesis since first hearing Foxtrot just before the release of And Then There Were Three as a 13 yr old into The Stranglers & other new wave / punk in the singles charts but I loved the sheer strangeness of the Genesis music & you couldn’t tell what was gonna happen on the album next . I’ve since watched the concert in Poland with Ray Wilson singing and it was a stripped down version of the band doing some older tunes which I thought worked . Obviously nobody else did. If they ever needed to re generate the memory of Genesis it would’ve been to have Gabriel on vocals - the pre 76 material obviously. Of course Pete has wanted nothing to do with them on stage since his life depended on it 40 years ago - & considering he’s made a decent living since 1975 & disowned Genesis as “ his schooldays “ he surely can’t deny how without his past he may not have got him half the opportunities especially during the upheaval in art pop music in 1977 /78. They tell everyone they’re “ all good friends “ so how can PG sit in the crowd during one of the shows in this tour ? He must’ve felt uneasy what with his being such a perfectionist 🙄❤️

It's been a while since you posted this vid but I have to comment nevertheless. It's pretty sad to see Phil in this state. I'll give you that. But he still gives his all and he is able to move a whole audience whether they have to tune the songs down a whole step. Yeah, his voice is not the same. It will never be. He is in his 70's and he has a multitude of health issues. But he still sings with emotion. You still feel young Phil somewhere in there. I didn't see the show, nor have I ever seen Genesis live ever, but I fucking loved the show. It's pure nostalgia and the people love it. I think your opinion is a little over the top. I think your opinion is more like insulting Phil, using terms like "morbid" and shit. He still gave a fucking great performance despite all of it. With our heroes getting older you’ll need to get used to this. “It’s time to retire” doesn’t cut it because many of us would prefer to see a compromised of our heroes than not see them at all. You say “if something is not good”. You really don’t think the 2021-2023 tour was “good”? Or are you watching these shows focused on the flaws? It’s about so much more than that. It’s about a gathering of artist and audience, perhaps for the last time. I found the last tour to be quite beautiful and I feel that your thoughts are quite harsh. You criticize the chair? Really? They should have gone out on a high (When In Rome - despite the dodgy visuals). Thumbs up from me for your suggestion of Chamber of 32 Doors or The Lamia to replace the boring Carpet Crawlers and dislike of Domino - though I like Fading Lights. I've loved Phil over the years and can't understand why he did this - did Tony need an even bigger house? Has to have been about the money. The bull I read about him or the band needing money is from the uneducated. Genesis’s manger and Phil solo manager are the same. Tony, Mike and Phil are friends who care about each other a lot. I would imagine these tours are more about keeping Phil busy so not harming himself. Any fan of him or the band would absolutely know what state his in and the limitations. I do not remember anybody forcing anyone to buy a ticket. Maybe the people who are going to these shows just want to say thanks and goodbye to their favourite band. In my case their music has got me through serious dark days, if I ever get to the show at the O2 I really would not care if Phil came out and mimed, I will have a banner that will say “Thank You”

Saw their show in Detroit. Although Phil was sitting down and his voice was not what it once was, it was an incredible concert. Very happy i went.

Watching a RUclips video made on a crappy android is unfair. If you saw Genesis live in their very last concert in America at Boston TD Gardens like I did, then you might have a leg to stand on. So in future if you feel the need to review the live performance of a band - then pay the $%^7ing money and go to the actual show. Oh, and I thought they were fantastic.

Yeah its sad to hear a review like this about also my fav band, but in honest truth i have to agree with you, I watched as much of the shows as I senses could handle, a friend went to see it live, apart from the huge cost for tickets, he enjoyed it! For me It's a bit like watching a fav film in awful quality, you were used to seeing a 4k version but now and got a video copy x 6 generations down.
More than anything I felt sad for Phil, I am not sure he really wanted to do it, but I think the pressure was enormous, so he did his best, which honesteslty wasn't best enough. All the critique added here is pretty fair, even if some does sound harsh, it's because it's sadly true.
I still love this band like nothing else, maybe The Beatles, just them two bands, but I struggled with the whole last domino tour.

I flew all the way from Israel to London to see the march 25th show.
I have to tell you my expectations were low. I saw Phil in videos in the last few years. I knew he was not his old self. But I just had to see them live. It was my last opportunity.
And boy was that a great concert! I really enjoyed it a lot.
Sure Phil is not what he was, but the show is not built solely on him. The whole production was awesome. They knew they were old so they adapted.
Phil was very funny, talking a lot to the crowd between songs. did a few crowd games with us, it felt very personal.
Sound was amazing, music was awesome. video behind them and lighting also.
You commented on the video about how the lighting and stuff looks - you were watching the wrong video. The angle from which it is recorded doesn't show the lights correctly at all. the lighting and video were awesome from farther away.
You can see this was done by true professionals.
It was the best show I've ever been to.
So maybe it is worse than it was at their peak. But it was still very awesome.

Even Jonathan Davis had a fancy chair to sit in when he did his solo tour in 2007.

I agree with you on a lot of points. I am a big fan and I want to point out a few things. After the 1990 performance in Knebworth of Mama (which is GREAT... if you have not seen it, please do), Mama was down at least one key in the start of the 1992 tour (which went right after Hold on My Heart, but it sounded great), it was dropped for a week after the infamous Tampa show where they did only two songs, brought that song back in Boston, and disappeared completely. When it reappeared in Boston 1992, they did it back in the original key for whatever the reasons were without Hold on My Heart - and jesus christ, he struggled!!! He probably lost confidence in doing it and had it dropped. When he came back to do it in 2007, it was down around two keys by this point - but it was ok IMO. He at least COULD sing it with some passion. It probably would have been better to show that instead of the Birmingham NEC 1984 clip in this video to explore the diminished ability.
With Tonight Tonight Tonight, it was down at least two keys starting in 1992. I remember when I first heard this in the mid 1990s on a live album, I agree that it felt weird. By 2007, it was down a key further, but again, he could at LEAST sing it.
Domino...I love the song! 1992 was the last great version of it. 2007 sounded too weird with a lower key, but again, he sang it solid. I just don't like the way they presented the sound on that. This last tour - 2022, it's not good at all.
Invisible Touch now ... yuck. Again, a song I loved for years. NDY sounded too low. This is even half a step lower from that! When I saw this tour in DC, I felt like I was listening to a campfire version of this song, not even the real thing.
I think Genesis should have used backing singers by around the 1986 tour. By around 1980, they were more overdubbing of Phil's voice as the backing vox too and I felt the live efforts of Tony, Mike, and Daryl sucked. They are by no means backing singers and they knew that. They even went as far to mix out Mike (or Daryl?) in In Too Deep on The Shorts live CD. Listen and compare that to the Forum 10/15/86 show version from Concert Vault and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. If you listen to any live release from Genesis, they are mixed down as low as possible.
If you ask me, the last real tour for Genesis was 2007. This Domino Tour was a trainwreck and a horrible way to say goodbye. Furthermore, Phil said around 2015 that he would only do another thing with Genesis only if he got his son on drums. His exact words. That rubbed me the wrong way because it came out later that he basically kicked Chester out of his band and Mike and Tony had no choice but to follow suit in effort tour make the tour happen.
In the big picture, this was nothing more than a modified 2007 tour with the selection of songs they played.

i donno.. in my estimation phil didn't really lose his mojo until around the early 00's. there are rare performances he did with the band around that time where you can really hear the first signs of his vocal diminishment, In 1992, in my opinion, Phil was still in almost peak performance.

@@DancingwithGhosts it can be argued that vocally he started having real problems in 1986. In his case, he managed to work his way through the limitations when some people can't. With 1992, I say the first few shows, Dallas and Houston, were the best ones. My problem with that tour is his voice sounded like it was rubbing against sand paper. Too rough. I like 2007 because his voice was consistent and he still had something despite the lower key.

@@goodbyenormabrando1421 part of it was all the steroid injections he would have to take when his vocal chords would get blown out.. that shit wears down your body over time and that's why he's so frail now

@@DancingwithGhosts he actually sounded stable by around 1994 with no key changes happening while on tour. No injections AFAIK either by that point. When you listen to the beginning to end of the tour in 1995, you would be hard pressed to find much difference. It seemed he really wanted to do songs in their original key since day one but then it seemed by the IT Tour, he had to realize the limitations over time - and sometimes unfortunately during a tour, you will find that out. Even the title track was lower than the original album version when the tour started in Detroit. AFAIK, that was the first time he lowered anything. When I read his book, it was the steroids that were the main player only for the IT Tour. Tours after? Not so much / he didn't elaborate.

it sort of goes like this for me - IT Tour - many key changes / dropped songs. Evident struggles too.
Serious Tour - some key changes / dropped songs. Struggling not very evident most times. In fact, Take Me Home got more exciting as the tour went by.
WCD Tour - key changes on some songs during the tour. Sounded raspy most times and singing phrasing of certain songs were being changed to accommodate the lack of ability.
1994 onward... pretty much the same show after show - even if you factor performance quality of new tours like 2017 - onward.
But one thing to mention ... 2016. I was there in Miami. He sounded great! Just a little over a year later by NDY... oh my god.
