ABOUT VAN NEISTAT:
A pioneer in digital filmmaking, Van Neistat made his first internet video, The Holland Tunnel, in 2000. He went on to collaborate with New York City artist Tom Sachs, directing a series of short films shown at the Guggenheim Museum in Berlin. Van has since directed dozens more films for the Tom Sachs Studio. In 2010 HBO aired The Neistat Brothers, an 8-episode series of short videos made entirely by Van and his brother Casey Neistat. Van Neistat’s directorial debut feature, A SPACE PROGRAM, co-written by Tom Sachs, premiered at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival and opened in theaters nation-wide in spring, 2016. In 2018 Neistat Directed the short film Paradox Bullets, co-written with Tom Sachs, narrated by Werner Herzog, and starring Ed Rushca. In an episode of the Neistat bros, Van recorded just before he and his first wife ended their marriage. In it he says to the camera words along the line of "this is sick!" meaning filming that event. He leaves the camera out in the hallway and goes inside...and eventually becomes single again. This might be a similar vibe. Not to throw shade but the Neistats Bros we have come to admire are open with the rocky nature of relationships. Their parents, themselves. We take heart in their wild and fierce natures to produce some of the best content. Whether it's flying around the world, flying in ultimate luxury, using what appears to be wizardry in holding disparate parts of sprockets and cogs together, or journeying inward to examine the limitless nature of the soul, the Neistats not only work hard, but seem to live hard. For their truth, they are amazing storytellers. I hope they still revel in their capacity to love.

I need a kidney but can't find a donor, can't find a job, never got to have a child due to the diabetes that's taking my eyes and kidney. The sun came up though and I have a lovely spouse, and a new home in learning how to fix. I hope you can still find the beauty while in the thick of it. Much love

Every day is a best day. I have multiple lifelong health issues that have given me the gift of living as if there is no tomorrow. Making it to 25 was an OMG moment. 40 was a “holy moly I made it to 40!” 50 blew my mind as cancer decided to enter the chat and I beat it. I’m now 56, too stupid to slow down or quit and living as I always have, like every day is a gift, tomorrow is not promised. I live by two mantras: Never Surrender and my favorite, borrowed from the late racing driver Jeff Krosnoff, Stay Hungry. Chin up, eyed forward, tomorrow will be better because you’ll make it better just by existing in it.
I listen to Lemmy, Ace of spades brings me out of it. “You win some, you lose some….”

This is so relatable. I'm currently going through a tough time at uni. I maintained a perfect grade throughout high school and college and now currently failing a class. I feel hopeless and have a lot of doubt but after watching this video I feel a bit better. Everyone is waging their own battle and fighting their own demon. Keep going Van! Whatever it is, it not gonna suck forever.
Hey man. I have been there before and my advice to you is just to give it your best shot. Focus extra hard on the class you are failing and try to get a deep understanding of the material and spending extra time studying the material And don't get too down on yourself - just give it your best shot.

Van, because of you I picked up a copy of Shop Class as Soul Craft, built my own cabinets for my photo studio, and found spiritual meditation and therapy in the realm of fixing and building my own stuff. While the last thing I ever needed was another hoodie, I could not help myself but buy one of your's in hopes you get your studio one day. I proudly wear it in TriBeCa, across your brother's old studio, to the gym, and even at the old Chinese Hardware store around the corner (you know the one). We all go through our trials and tribulations. Lord knows I went through mine in and after the military. Better days are around the corner and through these videos, you are helping countless others experience their better days. Much love to you Van.

Make of it as you wish again my advice would be don't waste your energy on complaining about this. I am sure you are really good at something in life and I'm sure it is not this.
Figure it out and make something out of it that makes you proud you'll be surprised how happy will make you but I won't lie you. To make something truly remarkable it is F*** difficult and requires a lot of sacrifice and mostly you feel like shit all the time but once you cross the threshold of pain and suffering there is an instant when you get to feel happy for a brief moment & that's it, then you start again and repeat until you die.
there you go, the secret to a good life there for you.

Van, I'm 60 years young, at about 35 years is ..."when everything falls apart"... happened for me. Somehow you've got to embrace "gratitude" (Louise Hay helped my spirit)... "any port in the storm" ... also helped.

You will find brighter days ahead Van. I was diagnosed with cancer at 30 years old. Life is like a roller coaster with ups and downs. I have been in remission for about 11 years now. Just know that you will make it through and come out the other side.

Sometimes I feel a similar vibe. I moved to the US from Russia 2-3 years ago and now live in Florida. I run a little video production company but my business goes very bad since I moved from LA. But what I do is learn. Learning everything about money and investing that I can find here on RUclips or through the pages of the book. That's why I started my youtube channel to improve my language and life. And youtube creators as you Van, are inspired so much. Thank you for that!

I feel like with the recent full moon phase we have all been experiencing, a major shift is in effect. I live just outside of Morgantown, West Virginia. To know you went to West Virginia University makes my heart really happy. I haven't left this god forsaken place. The seasons are ever changing, just like the daily weather. I have traveled within the united states, but I haven't made it to Aspen or the shore lines of California.

You don't know me and I don't know you (much - outside of your work here and otherwise, I mean) but I just wanted you to know that I'm going through some pretty awful *$%^ myself right now and, you don't know this, but when I happened to open my RUclips feed, saw your thumbnail and watched this very raw, generous and authentic expression of your experience right now... it made me feel better about what I'm going through because it made realise that I'm not alone experiencing something painful right now even if our reasons for that pain might be different... I'm also an artist and know how hard it can be and how much courage it takes to present something like this so I just wanted to say thank you for your honesty, your vulnerability and, as we used to say at my old art school, for your work.. because the value it brings to its viewers is the united catharsis and understanding of shared pain that we all experience in our lives every now and then for various reasons... ... ... I also have video diaries of myself experiencing moments I wanted to remember and capture in much the same way you seem to have in 2009 and wanted to say it's inspiring to see you utilise your vlogs, as it were, from that time in such a meaningful way... which also gives me pause for how I might use my own, maybe, someday... ... In any case I just wanted you to know that though it may feel like it, you are not alone and because of your work, I feel like I am not alone either. Thank you.

I understand. I often feel trapped too. Dreaming of freedom, of having as few of my strings attaches as possible, to just move with my own flow. I've recently been caught up in daydreaming about my mind being transported back to when I was a kid, a teen, and reliving my life differently, knowing what I know now, skipping all the parts and people where perhaps good lessons were once learned, but that otherwise we're dead ends and unnecessary now. Where could I be now? I accept that where I am is where the universe thinks I should be, but I sometimes still can't help daydreaming, still can't help feeling trapped. But I also know, that why freedom seems to taste so sweet, is because life is sometimes such a chellnge. Without that challenge, the sweetness of freedom would also disappear. I've come to think that everyday family life is like hiking up a mountain on a rainy day. It's a tedious frustrating grind. But when you get to shelter, stretch your legs next to a fire with some well earned food and a book, you suddenly realize the value of the struggle of the day. It's what gives the sweet rest its meaning. You had to earn the rest to be able to enjoy it. Likewise, I try to remind myself that it's by earn my freedom through the struggle of everyday family life, that makes it taste as sweet as it does. It's too counter intuitive to be grateful for it. But at least I can make myself understand that it is so, and surrender.
Thank God for the Spirited man. This film spoke to me when I needed it most.

As soon as I heard the opening of the song I knew it straight away. Springsteen has lifted my life in more ways than I could ever say. I'm always glad that I found music that speaks to me, some never experience that at all. We all go through it, but that doesn't make your "it" any less important. Sending strength.

Brother, this is how I been feeling last couple of months probably due to being home for the last 1.5 years because of covid and pressure and stress from work. Lost my dad this year and haven't been the same. Overwhelming amount of feelings. I have days, not just crying softly, but, literally wailing in the shower so kids can't hear it. Feel sad and down most days. Self esteem is at an all time low. Only thing that keeps me going is my faith in God, believing that I have his blessings and he has great plans for me and my family, so I keep praying. It's tough but we hold on until another day and week and month passes. Keep moving forward brother and know that this too will pass and we will be stronger because of it.
So sorry for your loss, your father must have been amazing, I hope you can slowly find Acceptance and find solace in the love of your family. xox
