Heaviest Death Metal Song? Symbolic

- Heaviest Death Metal Song? It just might be Death's "Symbolic." Symbolic is off Death's 1995 record of the same name. According to front man Chuck Schuldiner, the song is about losing the innocence of youth....a HEAVY topic indeed. Is it really possible that Death is heavier than Cannibal Corpse, Meshuggah or Thrash giants like Megadeth and Metallica? In order to find out, we watch a live performance of Death's Symbolic recorded in Los Angeles in 1998. Decide for yourself and post your opinion in the comments below. Get on Chuck Schuldiner's level with my full music theory course below. It's the best way to reach level 666 fast muhahaha!

Death was an example of how deathmetal can be very individual and creative. No one sounded like them before, no one has since. It is what every band should aspire to.
decrepit birth - diminishing between words is the only album ive heard that sounds like death
@@hbc431 Chemical Breath - Fatal exposure. Sadly enough that band was grossly overlooked. i guess mainly because the second album values was a serious step backwards imho.
I feel like on Symbolic they had everything: emotional leads, heavy riffs, technical skills when they're needed and the most important for me: the melody. I would say it was prog death mixed with melodic death and I love it.
in my opinion, death's most heavy song is Flattening Of Emotions no doubt, the amount of riffs and badass vocals make this song perfect. You should review this song too!
This song live hits on a totally different level. It gave me chills
to me their heaviest song is Born Dead, the riffs...
Suicide machine, see through dreams, and leprosy are also quite heavy
Altering the Future , my guy
I agree, Flattening of Emotions set a level of heaviness that I for a long time thought nobody could overcome. But Human in general is crushing and amazing.
I wish I can play like that while singing. Crystal Mountain is next shred.
Nah. Do Flesh and the Power It Holds. That solo is insane.
@@Brandon-dy8us true
Oh yeah, the Sound of Perseverance album. I also like the Bite the Pain.
After practice I’ve reached the ability to play all of death, it’s just dedication you can do it too!
Crystal Mountain is the only Death Metal song I like. Therefore Death is my favorite Death Metal band, but I hate Death Metal. So, yeah.
Symbolic just blew my mind the first time I heard it. There isn't a song on that whole album that is even remotely uninteresting or boring, due in large part to the fact that that album was the one they spent the most time writing. That and TSoP were Death's peak, and then there's The Fragile Art of Existence...
Just started listening to this album after finding out chuck worked on that piece /band ( as guitar ofc & some songwriting ) with Tim Aymar ( the vocals in Control Denied ) which also lead to me t discover Tim Aymars other band Called Psycho scream, no sign of life is one of their first songs ive heard.
@@riffreaper Just checked out No Sign of Life, and I'm very impressed! PS seems very underrated.
NEVER a day passes that I dont listen to death and or play Chuck's riffs.
I have a friend who is a Chuck doppelganger. He plays guitar but doesn't listen to Death and it makes me sad.
Death, the reason I picked up a guitar. Chuck was a revolutionary
Death’s music always calms me down.Death’s music sounds to me like the ocean, mysterious, vast, deadly, dangerous and peaceful at the same time. 🧘♂️🤘🎸🌊☮️🕊✌️
Ooooh I like thaf
I love Death so much. Such a unique band
My death tattoo tingles every time you mention chuck...no homo...
Flesh and the power it holds, and Scavenger of human sorrow opened up new worlds for me when I first heard TSOP. The drums are so jazzy, the bass is so groovy, and the guitars and vocals are so piercing, it just sounds demonic and so very metal! cheers brother! Thanks for the great music theory lessons!
🤘
Support metal, not rumors!!
Right on brother !
Hail Schuldiner! One of the biggest losses in the metal scene ever. What a legend 😢
In the '90s, big bands like Megadeth and Metallica reduced the hardness and complexity of their music and released more radio-friendly albums, while bands like Pantera, Slayer, and Death did the opposite.
Especially Death deserves to be in a very interesting position. Human and every album after it has intensified depth in the lyrics, searched for the different, produced works that are layered and not easy to digest.
It's really respectable. Chuck is truly a genius. There are orchestral versions of some Death songs on RUclips. I recommend everyone to listen.
Just got into Death, and definitely one of my favorites is Spirit Crusher. It primes you with the opening riff, then just sweeps you along with its heavy metal caravan.
A personal favourite of mine is the song “Spiritual Healing”
Spiritual healing is the best death song but worst death album
Morbid Angel’s Summoning Redemption crushes.
Chuck will always be my fav guitarist
I'd love to keep seeing these Death reaction/analyses! Love Chuck's music and lyrics just as much!
Unbelievably iconic band for the metal world chuck was legit a genius
My favorite BC Rich Stealth fact: the two most prominent users of the BC Rich Stealth are Chuck Schuldiner of Death and Jim West from "Weird Al" Yankovic's band (he used a Stealth in the early and mid 80s, including an appearance on the Merv Griffin Show where they played I Lost On Jeopardy! and where Merv announced that Jeopardy! would be returning to television).
And Derringer?
The Cars Elliot Easton had a bich also a fun bich fact
Didn't Jeff From Slayer play one too for a little while.
NO ONE tops the Almighty DEATH ... But MESHUGGAH is a close second I.M.O.. (DESTROY ERASE IMPROVE ERA) I was lucky enough to see them MANY TIMES and talk with Chuck Before He passed ..He was just SOOOO down to earth and an AWESOME guy ...As well as an INCREDIBLE Talent... R.I.P.
His guitar playing is incredible! His guitar is also very different. No front pickup, no selection switch, no whammy bar. He'll just bend a note two steps.
Shred, you should do empty words sometime. That has a haunting intro, and killer body!
he could stop belching too
And also a very short scale, too! Shorter, than Gibsons, if I get it right. Brain May also has a very different signature guitar with a short scale.
@@EM-zj1xm Brian Mays guitar is very unique, nothing like a serial produced guitar. He built it together with his father from different things that was avialible like wood from an old fireplace for example.
Chuck Is one of the greatest musician ever lived
"Do you remember when?
Hero's were so real
Their magic frozen in TIme"! RIP Chuck. Your legacy will live on forever. Frozen in Time.
Chuck was a genius. The guitar, the vocals, everything’s amazing. Death is a legendary band…
I love playing Symbolic on the guitar. The whole album is alot of fun, and great for getting out some aggression
Thanks for the chuck content shred I appreciate it. I think Human is his heaviest album because the production value was much higher than spiritual healing but he was still using marshall jcm back then. He switched to the valvestate before symbolic and got that classic midrangy tone, shredding soaring melodies, but the tone on human is very dark, bassy and cavernous, exploring the underworld. I think vacant planets or together as one are my favorites off that album
Amazing song. Symbolic, Pull the plug, Flesh and the power it holds are amazing as are many many many Death songs. Live in Eindhoven 1998 is the best. That show’s audio is clear. Everyone is at their maximum. Chuck is a power house through the whole show.
Maybe not heaviest, but definitely up there. Personally I’m in on The album “Scream bloody gore”, I think that album has some contenders. Also, Immolations “Legacy of decay” has got some awesome heavy tracks too with a lot of variety.
You're a trip man. I like you lol. Good reactions with awkwardly cool personality.
Interesante análisis!
you should check "flesh and the power it holds",interesting song
I love hearing about death and Chuck as they are very inspiring to me as a musician
Shred- you have helped me re discover Death. Thanks! Forgot how good they were.
Any chance of Prong or Fugazi on the channel?
I love Symbolic! imo their best album. Without Judgement is my favorite Death song and Crystal Mountain and Misanthrope are just great. Also has good production, which compaired to their old stuff makes it way more fun to listen to.
Scream bloody gore was also a banger
4:54 Chuck casually scratching his nose like its "no big deal"
Seeing Richard kill those drums, it's so strange hearing him do Ethel and Rusty on HS. Like how can that be the same person?
Fun fact this was if not first one of few shows starting in this lineup. Dynamo that year was their third show in that lineup :D.
I'm loving your foray into Death, definitely check out more! I seem to recall a 95 Tokyo show having a really tight lineup and it was recorded, but I can't remember if the sound quality was even as good as the LA and Eindhoven live recordings. Still, you should take a look at that if you want more Symbolic stuff live; it's the only live recording I know of 1000 Eyes for example. There are also a few videos from a 98 Chile show, I recommend checking out Bite The Pain or A Moment of Clarity from there.
I just learned how to play crystal mountain and i gotta say it was a chore for sure. Totally worth it now cauee i love playing it. When that tap part goes into the solo im on level 66.
I really never gave death metal any thought. I like heavy hardcore music but I must say this video of Death and you breaking everything down it made me feel the emotion. It’s exhilarating for sure!
Great Vid. Could you make one on the Empty Words performance?
Thank you for this one
I remember when I learned this song as a teenager, from a cassette :P
Might just revisit this album, need some cool riffage chops!
I wish you had picked a live version of the actual band that recorded the Symbolic album to review due to the 2nd solo. The 2nd solo that was recorded by Bobby Koelble is incredible..but the dude who was playing in this video, Shannon Hamm, had a really hard time with it. Like you said, he kind of Kerry King'ed it'. On paper, the guy who recorded it and played guitar on the Symbolic album is a jazz professor at the University of Central Florida. Needless to say, the guy shreds.
The lyrics to this track and rhythmic changes make this such a powerful song. Unbelievable
Definitely any song off of HUMAN is the heaviest material they made.... Granted it might not have as many tempo changes or dimensions as Symbolic 🤔 However 🤷🏻♂️Hard to top Flattening of Emotions 👌
My favourite band ever! Chuck was a genious!!!
Dude, you have to check out Necrophagist's album Epitaph. If you love that harmonic minor, diminished, pedal point neo-classical shit. But death metal. A masterpiece. It's right up your alley.
*Death was, is and forever will be the best death metal band ever. Chuck was a genius playing, writing, singing, composing....the man was the greatest. The Chosen One. R.I.P.. Symbolic is the best album in my opinion.*
I gotta say Open casket imo... Good video Thumbs up!
That Opening Riff 🤘🔥 *mwahahaaa
If you have Symbolic as th3 heaviest death metal song I'm thinking you haven't listened to nearly enough death metal
What tracks/albums do you have in mind? Just curious
For real, heaviest song in Death would be leprosy in my opinion. In all of death metal, I can't really say.
@@jehanzebshahzad6579None So Vile and Pierced From Within - probably the two heaviest albums ever recorded
gay ahh albums
Good morning my Friend!
I've always thought of Death as a thrash band more like Megadeth than Cannibal Corpse who is truly death metal. It would've been cool if Dave Mustaine and Chuck Shuldiner could've hooked up. Chuck added a lot of class to every project he ever worked on!
I love so much that is palpable that you’re a huge death fan as I am long life Chuck
Should I sell my soul? Or just drink some wap juice? (Whoops, no wap juice today, not enough power then)
After years and years of DM songs, Left hand path from ENTOMBED is the best DM song of all time.. The song have everything you can ask from a DM classic. Fast furious grind slow midtempos atmospheres with keys nihilistic lyrics and crazy/sweet solos. And a great intro
Kickass song, that starting riff is very catchy.
Awesome
YES I love this one symbolic was my first riff I learned from this band and my favorite riff to play from their catalog
Shred you really have to check the studio track, the 2nd solo is played by Bobby Koelble with a 29 fret guitar (here its played by Shannon Hamm with a 24 fret and its not as good as the original in my opinon)
He (Bobby) uploaded a video on his yt playing all the symbolic solos he wrote and its really worth checking out, a truly overlooked/underrated guitarist
Bobby Koelble is an absolute master of the instrument. The few solos he played on the record are all insane, as are the ones he played live both with Death and Death To All.
Flesh and the power it holds next please!
“Shred, you pick that twang-box farley tolerable!”
Schuldiner was n.1 t's the only death metal band I listen to for a reason. The music is not just heavy, it is also good from an emotion POV, it makes you shiver. Take for example Lack of Comprehension. Shivers every time. Can't compare to anyone else. Everybody else write good death meetal songs, these ones are better though. Long live Chuck, always be loved and remembered
Such a fun song to play. I can't play it and do the vocals at the same time, though. 😆😆
Symbolic, as good as it is, isn't even the heaviest Death song, let alone the heaviest death metal song.
And it's not death metal. As a matter of fact, Chuck hated the term.
It's awesome to see people read and watch music like this
I absolutely love Death, Chuck was one of the biggest influences on my guitar playing & music writing. RIP Chuck 🙏
This was my very first extreme metal show i went to i was about 15 years old seeing death for the first and last time r.i.p. chuck
Chuck can write symphonies full of emotion, next you should watch Pull the Plug
Finally somone who recognizes the ultimate greatness of Symbolic! Wha hahaha..whenever I bring up the top ten metal album of all time Symbolic, dudes are always bringing up the earlier album thats good...but doesnt touch the perfection that is Symbolic. Bwah hahahah
Goddamn that rocks.
Symbolic to me sounds very relaxing 😌, like heavy metal meditation music.🥰🌊🧘♂️🤘🕉🎸
HATEWORK by Morbid Angel.
Easily one of Death's best, but my favorite track off this Symbolic is actually Empty Words. My favorite album is Individual Thought Patterns and that is a definite
I would've picked 'Misanthrope'. That chorus riff is filthy! 🤘
Even in 2023 Symbolic sounds fresh ❤
Fuck yeah!!! More death plssss
Great band
DEATH is my #1!!! Every album is an amazing piece of f*cking art.
I still get the chills every time...
The heaviest Death Metal song title goes to Infecting The Crypts from Effigy of The Forgotten
Is this guys voice the one I hear in all of my RUclips ads?
Yes!!!
Zombie Apocalypse by Mortician
Death - Flattening of emotions
Ad a Dglgmut, Arsonist, Disease Injury Madness, by Between the Buried and Me. Those have some heavy dirtyness.
Chuck legendary
From @0:56-@1:29 that sounds quite a lot like andreno.....chrome harvesting
heavy, riffs , melody .. best band of death metal
I like how there is Chuck... and then there is the other guy... lol.
Does Shred like Trivium? Hopefully one day he'll make a video. Matt Heafy has a very similar style close to Chuck
Listen Death is my favorite death metal band of all time but i think Lashed to the Slave Stick by Nile is the heaviest death metal song ever written
Where The Slime Live - Morbid Angel
Didn't realize before. But that other guitarist really flubbed up that second part of the solo. lol
Yes
I don’t know. I always thought Souls To Deny by Suffocation was the heaviest death metal ever recorded. The riffs and drums and franks vocals. A masterpiece.
Symbolic is a great song, but I'd say that Cannibal Corpse and Dying Fetus heavier bands. Cannibal corpse is brutal for the sake of being brutal in their sounds and speed and Dying Fetus is brutal with technical playing.
Dude From Skin to Liquid by CC has got to be one of the heaviest songs of all time. Something about when they add those wicked fast tremolo parts at the end of the riff Is fucking brutal
@@tommygalusha I haven't heard the song before, I'll check it out. Scourge of Iron isn't their fastest buts it's still pretty heavy all the same with those chugs.
Heaviest death metal song of all time? In terms of both sonically and content-wise? “Father You’re Not a Father” by Immolation
You should react to dissection
