  • In this 2nd part video I talk about why you should use different wedges for the Stan Utley method of chipping. You will see once you choose the correct loft how much control you will have over your golf ball. I also explain how you can use this same technique off bare or tight lies.
Remember there are loads of my videos on RUclips so just type in my name and subject and you'll be able to watch them at your leisure.

After practising Julian's latest chipping video I played 9 holes & my sand wedge chipping was great.
I was much closer to the pin & only had 14 putts.
My arthritic left knee limits me to 9 holes. For the half round my handicap would have worked out as 12.
Not bad for a79 year old with a drive of only around 160 yards.
I only wish I could have started to play golf with Julian's coaching.

A very helpful video with clear advice & interesting explanations of why Julian's methods actually work.
I remember things more easily if I can understand why they work.
I prefer to know the reason why I am doing something.
Trying to remember different types of shot without knowing WHY ,just leaves me confused & it is even more difficult when playing a match.
    Julian recommends us to PRACTICE.
He will be the first one to admit that he works & practises & does NOT rely on his natural ability.
    Thank you Julian.

    Julian
I love your demonstration of Stan Utley’s chipping technique. I have his book and have studied his RUclips videos as well. There is much to read about fast twitch muscles in golf as well as other sports and activities. Unfortunately mine only show up in the short game ( the dreaded four letter word in golf…yips)!!! My question is how do I eliminate this awful affliction? Do you focus more on a shoulder turn, arm turn or using your hands in the chip swing? ANY advise would be very appreciated!

Hi Michael, many thanks for your kind message and I know the feeling that you’re having with your chip shots, not nice. Have you tried left hand below right if you’re alright Handed Golfer? Like Matt Fitzpatrick. I found this works really well as I have suffered a similar feeling over the years. Ultimately, we have to do something completely different to change the negative emotions that come with the yips.

@@JulianMellor Thx for your timely response. Yes I have tried left hand low and don’t really like it. Interestingly I have tried your full swing off and on starting with Brian Soarks and never found the results I expected. Yesterday, however, I found that turning against a firm left leg ( I.e. not letting my weight move over my foot) was an “Eureka” moment for me. My ball striking was crisp and consistent. My confidence level has soared (at for 24 hours!) and I look forward to the range. Perhaps this will help with confidence in the short game as well. My suggestion to you would be to incorporate the idea that the back turn not cause your weight to go “ over” the back foot into your videos. If I’m out of line I apologize. Please let me know what you think.
      Thx

@3:37: I love it when my opponent is just off the green, with a fair amount of run to the hole, and he pulls out a sand wedge or lodge wedge. It means I will win the hole!

I was playing on Monday and watched my opponent do exactly the same thing with a disastrous result. Simplicity is key 🔑

Many thanks. This is one of my major letdowns around the course. So much so I resort to the putter much to everyone's horror. Always sculling the ball so will remember this for tomorrow's game.

@@JulianMellor I played my best average golf last week so I can only remain positive, but yes will get on the practice greens beforehand to give it a go and find out what the speed of the greens are going to be. It's just been hard rain up in the Nottinghamshire area this evening.
