The song is sad story about a sax player who lived life hard and did his living to the late hours of the night. He had people around him who tried to set him straight on life, but he refused it and it led to his demise. It's that simple.
Wannabe sax player
It's about a musicians life man. I can't believe you all were that clueless! You all are the first people I have EVER heard tear down Steely Dan holy shit. PLEASE STOP!
I think the moral of this story is this: when listening to any song by one of the best bands in the world, don't use an appalling, shoddily made fan video.
Yeah I was trying to be a little more polite than that but you you’re still being polite with what you’re saying because they just stepped all over one quality piece of music so will be interesting what they really think this music this is music
This is one of the best recordings ever made. So smooth.. so warm...so transparent. They lyrics are way above your heads but you should be able to hear the perfection of this recording.
They even think a stupid lyric slideshow video is part of the song.
He’s a hustler. How can you not figure this out? The lyrics literally tells what he’s about. 🤦🏽♂️
@Jeyroc 420 Gucci man Dude, it's obvious when you already know the meaning is and what to look for in the song. There's probably one person in a hundred who could figure this out on a first listen, and when you add the fan-made visuals it makes it that much more confusing. Give 'em some leeway when you know they've never heard it before. It's probably Steely Dan's most difficult song to understand.
Try a musician.
@@RockN2Country The problem is they’re trying to take everything too literal music doesn’t always make sense you don’t have to understand every word you hear music you don’t need eyes for music. Ask a blind person how much they enjoy music in other words come on not everyone can appreciate it just looking for the wrong thing all the time
It's about a dreamer, a guy who has delusions of grandeur, of becoming something he never will.
oh man yall destroyed a classic song
Your god damn right
Terrible lyric video. This song is bad ass.
Weak review bro, agree, you can tell these two have limited range. This track was too much for them to handle. Weak, I’ll never watch another review from these two.
My dad listen to them so I know all their music. But its was something I listen to at the age. But we went to see them live year ago. I was excited to go. But holy crap...it amazing. The sax player was awesome. Happy I went after!
Dont focus on the visuals. Its a fan made video.
Yea, especially when the visuals are stick figure cartoons
i have never given a dislike before on any reaction video...That being said, if you focus on some video that someone made, and clearly has nothing to do with the music, your musical reactions are pointless....If i wanted to see reactions to homemade video's, I would be watching those type of reactions...Do yourselves a favor and listen to the studio recordings until you gain enough experience to listen to the musical composition...This is just my take on it...Of course you will do whatever you want to do, it is your channel.
Exactly some idiot made video that has nothing to do with Steely Dan.... this song is considered a masterpiece by most people that understand and appreciate music
LOL! we watching a reaction to some random homemade video. i think that's where we went left. LOL! They need to do it again and just stare at the cover.
@@kidpoker007 this song has always been a favorite of mine, I could get lost in the musicality of SD for hours!! Their reaction, especially hers, was very disappointing and juvenile in my opinion
@@GranFelicia I completely agree. Made me angry. So childish. Move on to some rap or something. Steely Dan is to sophisticated for her ears.
Bill Burr videos are easier for her to understand... stick to that.. let's see what Jamel is up to...
I’ve never clicked dislike on a video before I watched your reaction to this song. This is embarrassing.
You don't have to figure out everything, just listen
I would be curious to hear a song that she puts together and what it would sound like probably bubblegum ‘ cause man she didn’t understand deep-thoughted lyrics
The credits are a who's who of brilliant session players. This is a fantastic song sung from the perspective of a dissolute playboy who sees himself losing it all and knowing he's only got himself to blame. If Alabama is renowned for success, then surely his epic failure deserves to be commemorated. It's a tragic song about a man watching his life burn down.
I have no problem with either of you liking/disliking music, even music that is far too sophisticated to appreciate. But, as others have said, do not take the video or the lyrics too literally. Being a music critic may not be your best choice for a career path.
wow ya'll want to react to music..you all are reacting to the video.... Steely Dan has some of the darkest lyrics set to the most exceptionally produced music in the music industry
That was the most disrespectful reaction video I've seen.
Y'all are being too literal...You need to understand metaphors and abstract language of poetry. For example; "Die behind the wheel" doesn't have to mean actual death!
Apparently y'all haven't heard Jazz or people who can plan an instrument rather than scratch discs. Miles Davis ring a bell? Charlie Parker? And what about bass and drums? Like how the hell do you dance without drums? Maybe the words don't make sense to you but you two could hold each other and dance naked to that shit. They only earned BANK making the music they made. And they happen to be some of the best composers and musicians on the fucking planet.
Embarrassing. Not coming back. Talib Kweli, MF Doom, De La Soul, Pharrell, Kanye, Ice Cube and a host of others admire the true artistry and grooviness that Steely Dan represent. You mock it. Smh
Naw - it takes time to get it - it will haunt them
It's a beautiful song. You don't get it. Are you drunk? Or just...
Skip the videos, get the lyrics and listen to good copy on good headphones.
Right
If you cannot react then don’t do it, please in favour of music.
You didn’t get it, is not always bout lyrics it’s bout the music
Peace
Your faces said it all. Translation: different = trash.
Pathetic, right?
Consider yourselves lucky that you are even listening to SD instead of trashing it you sure have a lot to learn about music , and a long way to grow up .
Honey:: Music isn't for the eyes::Relax: Feel the groove and ride mama* This joint has a hot pocket..Don't waste it by over thinking
This is one of the best songs ever recorded by one of the best bands! You should just listen to the song instead of laughing through the video.
I am not sure what you all think of this classic , it 's trippy and weird? Giggle , giggle. You all are definitely confused! No shout out here!
Talk about closed minds
It takes time
Steely Dan's not everyone's cup of tea, but a lot of folks really like them. Those are the viewers who'll be checking out a reaction video, and will not look kindly on the trashing of a favorite artist and song. So that's what's behind the negative comments and votes. The lyrics were influenced in part by 70's football, the famously-winning University of Alabama's Crimson Tide, a name that amused the writers (per songfact.com) as a grandiose name that had become synonymous with 'winners', and Deacon Jones, a strong player for the Rams and Chargers known for his big personality and aggressiveness. Their point being, if Crimson Tide can mean winners, then the song's protagonist daydreams about amping up his own game, and not just being the boring, nerdy, nobody loser that he is, but he'll master the sax and the 'Big-L loser' lifestyle of a jazz musician, drinking Scotch whiskey and dying behind the wheel, and he'll be a 'Deacon Jones-sized' loser, 'Deacon Blues'. But, if you're not plugged into the 70's culture in which the song is written, and don't look up the lyrics and discussions of their admittedly-obscure meaning, then the colorful imagery of the poetry, set to an iconic light jazz theme, probably just comes off as 'weird', I guess.....
Spoon feeding real music to these two is a total waste Jeezs!
STEELY DAN IS A COMBINATION OF BLUES,JAZZ AND ROCK. THE PLAYERS ARE MOSTLY SESSION PLAYERS. THE CHANGES OF TEMPO AND TIME SIGNATURES IS TOP NOTCH. TRY AL DEMIOLA "CHASING THE DEVIL DOWN A SPAINISH HIGHWAY. INSANE GUITAR WORK.
Did you leave caps lock on or something?
Wow. I know Steely Dan is not for everyone but y’all did this one dirty. Calling something “weird” a couple of dozen times is not really a reaction worth sticking around for. React to the music and ignore the fan video that has nothing to do with the band. It was an especially bad video but has nothing to do with the song regardless. Not sticking around to hear anymore.
This is exactly why I hate reactions to visual lyric videos...it changes how people interpret a song... listen to the song! Thumbs down.
I am stunned by this reaction. Maybe the video is somewhat weird, but ignore that. You are playing a song that is about the music. This music is pretty straight forward when it comes to Steely Dan. Listen and enjoy the beauty of it. The lyrics are also straight forward for Steely Dan. I think you were a little too stoned to do this reaction.
A really classy song with two reactors, too busy watching the video and not using their ears...
Stick to simple, unchallenging stuff would be my advice... Seem like nice people, though
All the best with your channel ❤️
The dude felt it - women generally wont .....who would want that, for their sons, or husbands ?
What are you guys? Baked? don't try to dig into much. relax enjoy the music.
You guys don’t appreciate a great classic
When you just don't comprehend talent............................................go back to hip hop!
You disrespecting artist of this caliber? When great bands listen to music they listen to Steely Dan.
They were perfectionist. They never left anything by chance. How come that all the lyrics are very "strange" or whatever. Both of them were (are) intellectuals. Even the name Steely Dan comes from a novel called "The naked lunch." You americans, should be very proud, that Steely Dan were an american band. (Project.) Cheers!
Steely Dan is incredible. The best of the best musicians, and a great collection of hits
I thought you were supposed to react to the song. Not some random fan's video. He was speaking about the stereotypes of being a musician.
This is a classic song and the lyrics are made to be a little surreal and in a blues type of way. This song never had a video . It’s a beautiful melancholy track that if you’re a musician you would appreciate. You really have no clue how influential Steely Dan was . My high school band played “ Peg” which is on this same album and it has surreal lyrics as well. You guys are in over your heads . Look up the making “Aja” and how many great musicians that played on it . Don’t take the lyrics literally just chill and listen.
This video was not made by the band, it was made for RUclips as a sing along. Best to close your eyes when listening to Steely Dan.
He's a HUSTLER bruh! No boppin or vibin?! This song is a mood. It's deep but Steely RnB smooth as hell. Don't trip just feel
Too many interruptions... Can't subscribe. What's with the giggling?
Two sins: you listened without headphones and stopped before the song was finished :)
They laughed and giggled through the whole fucking thing. The chick thinks she's real cute. I got news for her, she acted like a complete idiot. They should lay off the grown up music
Wow...The most disappointing reaction video I've ever seen to one of Steely Dan's iconic tunes. It's clearly over their heads..
A lot of today's younger folks listen songs that has lyrical content that is so literal and obvious...Nothing there with any wit or that inspires any thought...
So glad I was born in the early 70's!
I've seen hundreds of these videos and this is only one I've ever given a thumbs down because of Jai and her not understanding what she's listening to and reacting to the dumb video that has nothing to do with the great classic song.. WOW!
Ya'll takin plenty LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLssssssss on this one!!!
I would HIGHLY encourage you both to buy Steely Dan's Greatest Hits album and just sit and listen to it several times over several days. It will change your life. It was the greatest fusion of jazz and rock and roll ever. The level of musicianship is off the charts and the songwriting is genius. PLEASE ignore the videos linked to their music until you're familiar with their tunes. I'd LOVE to see a reaction video from you both for their songs Josie, Do It Again, Reelin In The Years, Any Major Dude, or Aja. Pick any two or three. You can't go wrong!
This was a bummer to watch ... thought ya'll were gonna get into it and really appreciate it. Smfh
Steely Dan should always be listened to with a lyric video. This video was not produced by the band but rather a fan.
Jai tried, but like Eve drug Adam down, the constant belittling of the song by half not understanding poetic lyrics made both of you look bad.
Is it about the music? I guess not.
Well first of all the video with this is part of the issue. But as others have said Steely Dan took things to a whole different level in terms of "popular" music. The fact that they are still played regularly and continue to get new fans all the time says a lot. But frankly some people are not able to fully grasp what they where trying to create. This is sort of a sad statement in terms of younger people not being able see anything but the literal words, and find meaning beyond just simple concepts. "I didn't miss nothing" lol sorry you missed it all.
A song about the psychology of a jazz musician. To really understand it all you need to be of that world. One example” I take one last drag before I approach the stand” The stand is the bandstand or stage .so he takes a last toke before getting up to play . “ sue me if I play too long “ refers to taking too long a solo etc etc etc
Stopped before the redemption.
Lady So RAP says something....really
Great band. Try peg, FM, my old school, Reelin in the years, do it again etc.... They are very talented and soulful. Tks guys
Yes they are...out of reach for some especially if your not familiar with that 70s type laid back stoner's vibe lol
This is such a mournful song. Love Steely Dan
I love this song
You guys missed and ruined the entire flow and meaning of this classic song. It s about how he lived his life, free and unapologetic. Up all night playing music that he loved, drinking whiskey and making love. Its really very simple
This is a poor reaction. No headphones and too much focus on the video and not the music.Try Black Cow or Kid Charlemagne. These guys have been heavily sampled.
You are listening to some of the best musicians that have ever existed and recorded music. the visuals kinda ruin it for me as I just have listened to this music for over 40 years...just put headphones on and listen. It paints the picture and story for you. Thanks for reviewing
Different, called talent
It’s probably above your pay grade 😊
This is Steely Dan. Their main focus was jazz. But it ended up coming out more like pop jazz back in the 70s and 80s. Most of their songs are about satire. He's talking about how musicians are singing their songs doing they're thing. But then get behind the wheel and died in a car accident because they drink all night. So it's kind of like a satire type song. With some Jazz soft rock pop rhythm in it. I know you see my picture and I'm wearing a cowboy hat and I love Steely Dan great music to Make Love by.
Perfectly said......was sorta dissapointed that the point was missed and kinda dissed at the same time though :(
I don't think I've heard great music called "weird" since my 45 year old mother heard Jimi Hendrex for the first time back in '67
Friends told me about this reaction vid. Now that I've watched it I agree with them. You guys have no idea. Why watch a video, when the song is the basis of the reaction and gets basically ignored. Lay off the more cerebral songs and groups, you don't possess the intelligence, to pass comment. Please stick to.nursery rhymes, more your speed...unfortunately you both come accross as being simple minded, sad.
Wow, It's such an easy song to follow lyrically. How were you so silly and off base. Think before you speak.....
Do some research and get back later. She missed the whole concept. Use your brain sweetheart!
Keep doing random hip hop, do not challenge your gray matter. Very sad!
The video is not good for the song. The song is awesome and tells a story. You need to read the lyrics and understand what the writer is talking about. Every song has a story and you have to understand this story like any other to appreciate it. Every up beat song isn’t fun or energetic just like every slow song is romantic or sad. This song has a deep meaning you just have to slow down to see it.
Yeah this was a seemingly drunken uneducated reaction to one of modern music classic songs
Hope you guys have learned a bit
This was an honest reaction video. She didn’t dig it …so what…not every band is for everybody.
The video relating to this song is, as you said, NOT an official video approved by the artists. That said it is one persons interpretation to the lyrics of this song. As in the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" that can also be said of song lyrics. Steely Dan have an almost unique way of writing song lyrics. Some phrases are cryptic and most certainly cannot be taken literally. I am neither a poet or a song writer so I cannot speak specificaly to the meaning of the lyrics in this track. I have seen numerous interviews with both Fagan and Becker and they are very illusive as to song lyric meanings. They have expressed that interpretation be left to the listener. So, we may all have different takes on the lyrics of various songs by Steely Dan or any artist for that matter.
Aja by Steely Dan is on my top 10 greatest albums ever made list.
For me, Steely Dan is always about the music. The lyrics may or may not make sense. But some people really hate Steely Dan. It's okay.
I"ve never disliked a reaction video but that was pathetic. You're not even listening to the song. The video has nothing to do with the music, it's just someone's bad video. Clearly you have no idea what you are talking about. The musicianship that goes into Steely Dan's work is unmatched. Definitely over your head. As the saying goes, if you have to ask, you don't get it.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that I red that Alabama`s college football team needed a name, so the came up with Crimson Tide. Whatever that means. But that is also the essence of this composition. It is not about the name. It is about the contents. From all perspectives of life.
Steely Dan is intellectual poetry that kicks ass.....dont do it if you dont get it!
Get headphones and listen instead of yapping !
Remember that movie Clueless? 😂
Steely Dan has that same effect on me. Don't know how else to explain except...they're different.
This entire album will put you in a trance if you're not careful.
It's a great song by a great band, ignore the video it was made by a fan
I bought the album when it first came out. The meaning of the song is simple and obvious. The first time I heard it I knew exactly what it is about. It's an homage to Jazz musicians. Black Jazz musicians, in particular. I had to stop watching this because it just got more and more stupid.
Can’t you tell what kind of wheel it is ?just listen to the song ... I mean listen .
this was a very juvenile response to a fan made video - you completely ignored the music. I've never heard anyone make fun of S.D. in all my 54 years in this world - until now. truly disappointing
There is nobody. And I mean no one who would "smash the like button" after a review like this. The only reason why people watched this is because they are Steely Dan fans. Not fans of yours. And then when they get here you trash it while not really giving it a chance. I know everything isn't for everyone. But GD. Out if all the reviews I watch this is at the top of the weakest review I've seen. You have no control over your girl, and you are too silly to realize that you found a gold mine in Steely Dan. You would have gotten 1,000's of views by giving it a chance.
This man "Deacon" is a cool cat musician...he is a stereo type of the small time career musician with all the vices and weaknesses of a regular human being...this is a portrait peeps...Ty guys...great react
Losers are called Deacon Blues! At Alabama games if the visitors lose they play this song for them. Check out “ hey 19” that will twist your mind.
Actually Deacon Blues would be the headmaster of a college's woe had you dropped out to follow the life of a musician.
The artist did not make the video. It has nothing to do with the song. The Alabama football team dominated college football in the seventies. Winners. He's a loser and has chosen Deacon Blues as his name. Judging the song by the video is wrong. Jazz influence in r&b and rock was new in the seventies. The "die behind the wheel" is a metaphor for his tragic life.
Love you guys, but this is considered the highest level of jazz/Pop music, along with much of the Steely Dan catalog. Frankly if you don’t have a jazz background and believe in staring at strangers’ videos while hearing new music, That’s a big red flag!
I wish you had not used this particular video, you were so distracted by it. And I think you were naturally trying to match the video to the lyrics at first, and there's no match. Not everyone loves Steely Dan, so that might not have made any difference. For me it took a few listens, and I know I'm not alone. But this video didn't really give you much of a chance.
Steely Dan was the '70s avatar of living the seedy disco nightlife. Think of the song that way as you listen to it.
Wow that was too disrespectful for me to ever think about us subscribing to you guys well thank you for that because you made it a little easier but at least you did actually put this song on but then go on to completely insulted you’re not from me.
Peace love and joy to you and yours
WOW Jai!! Don't put a number one hit song down just because you don't understand it. I would say millions of other people did understand it and why are you looking at that dumb video and rating a great classic song over a piece of crap video. I think maybe you should stick to watching Bill Burr videos they are easier for you to understand.. I usually love your work but this video is a big thumbs-down because of Jai not understanding great music.. don't you understand a fusion of jazz, rock and blues.. I guess it is kind of hard for some folks.. thank God for Bill Burr videos!..
No offence, but I sense It's not that the song is weird, it is that you just don't get it .
Steely Dan they're for a reason alive the last 50 years.
@@2cawwa2 I'm not surprised since English is not my mother tongue. 🤔
This ain't your thing. Steer clear of Steely Dan. It's too deep for y'all. You'll never get it.
Confusing video images with the song is a rookie mistake. Songs that are initially challenging can sometimes become one's favorite songs once they're more fully absorbed.
It's all about being his own man/person. "I want a name when I lose? he doesn't give a damn what anybody thinks. He's is going to be what he wants to be!! It can take a while to pick up on Steely. Keep listening until it clicks, and you'll never look back. Enjoy.......
come back to this. this song is worth watching again. this song is the hardest saddest song there is
