I've heard a number of different versions of this tune but this has to be one that stands out for me. It's difficult enough to play this fingerstyle, but to slap, absolutely amazing. I know there are many bassists that don't slap or don't like the technique and that's fine but I think that it's great when a player can show variety and creativity. Remember people there's always more than one way to do anything. Say what you want, Mr. Miller pays homage to Jaco for sure but in classic Marcus Miller style!
There is 2 other versions, the one on The Sun Don't Lie studio album, and the one with Victor Wooten on some live. But yeag this is insane to play that in slap.
He's probably the ONLY one that pays homage to Jaco, or that we should even allow to try. Too many aspire to do what Jaco did, and, in the words of the great Pat Metheny, "they really need to just move on...let it go". Marcus is the exception.
I was 18 in music college. Learning TT and other tough bass tunes. Spent hrs on hrs. Now I see Mr. Miller slap TT. I'm not climbing that mountain. Love ya Marcus The Mayor of Fender Town
This man is the azimuth of bass as a lead instrument. He plays each note and phrase with conviction and precision, yet more soulful than anyone else in this genre.... A master writer, arranger and virtuoso. Hats off Marcus, you have taken Teen Town to a level Jaco would have applauded! We appreciate your gift of music for all of us to enjoy and as a bass player something to aspire to! Great post and audio - five stars! Wish I was there for this show...
This is an excellent version by Marcus Miller. His style is way more different than Jaco's, but he pays real tribute to the song and takes it to a complete different level.
I love the dark ritualistic start. You can hear Marcus talking to Jaco in the dark . With those first notes . Jaco is presently a ghost. But he is busy flying about waiting to reincarnate. He knows he is a spirit. He helps me practice sometimes.
If you play slap you usually build up a skin or bone callous from the abrasion. It's small, but it helps prevent pain to the thumb for stuff like this. If you mean for stamina reasons, take a look at people like Les Claypool and Victor Wooten, being able to play slap at the high level live
As bananas as that guitar solo was, you can still hear th crowd screaming underneath it all. Christ almighty from start to finish that was a tour-de-force of musicianship. I was in a band with a bass player used to Rave about Marcus Miller and I had never listened to a single thing the man had done that I had known of. The dude is just an absolute Phenom and I can see why anybody who has ever listened to this man playbase would go around and tell everyone they possibly could about just how unbelievable account is. I love listen to Marcus tell stories to another talents of his is that he is a phenomenal Storyteller as well, and at the time he was coming up with some of the legends that he has played with, you will never find a more concise compendium of musical stories. Bravo Marcos
One of the most difficult things for anyone to do is to honestly express oneself. To really truthfully expose oneself. Marcus Miller has taken a beloved classic written by a fellow artist that he actually knew and not only honestly expressed his musical interpretation but also shows a deep respect and love for Jaco by addressing this tune at all. The way he plays is himself. Just as how Jaco played was himself. To those who feel it should only be played a certain way with a certain style really don’t have a clue about what music is. I feel sorry for them. In their misguided worship of style and narrow mindedness, they cut themselves off from experiencing the realizations of a different approach from another musical genius. Marcus showed so much love here for Jaco, his friend and hero, that it almost hurts to watch. It actually raised the hair on my head and bought tears to my eyes. What a master! As for Dean “Crazy Legs” Brown on guitar, he is also a master of his instrument 🎸 with a unique honest approach that may make some uncomfortable which is a PLUS. I’m happy to hear that he made people uncomfortable. It proves that he was honestly expressing himself which most people cannot handle. They cannot be honest so when someone else is, it makes them shudder. Good. I’ve met all of these musicians at that time and they were like a family. All are good honest people brought together by Marcus to make this magic at that time. Somewhere, Jaco smiling every time this video is enjoyed. He knows it’s the ultimate compliment and expression of love.
I saw him recently live with Dennis Chambers and Victor Wooten and Bob Francescini, and he still does that weird dance, but it didn't seemed to make anyone uncomfortable. Although on camera it seems weirder that in real life hahaha
Love Jaco's playing, some of his fans can be a bit much. Jazz has a long tradition of musicians playing each other's compositions, it's a sign of respect.
Ironically, I listened to Jaco's original version yesterday, and to me, it now sounds like a computer on "bass synthesizer" mode. Amazing how time can change our perception of events and sounds.
Many Jaco fans really are just impressed with his overwhelming technique and locked in feel. If they don’t see MM’s re-imagining of the time as an exciting, highly creative tribute to JP, they really didn’t fully understand or appreciate Jaco. They should know that Jaco had various versions of teen town that he did in different live situations. Anyone who is stuck on the Heavy Weather version is missing it. Teen Town is about a young, fresh audacious approach to jazz. Each interpretation is SUPPOSED to be different. That’s the point.
I have to admit, when I saw this one's title I raised an eyebrow... for me, Jaco is sacred, and if it ever will be a Free Republic of Bassists its anthem will be Teen Town, "Ok, show me what you got, marcus" and clicked play prepared to worst. Well, the cat HAS GOT all it takes to play this and with flying colours! It even adacts so well to his particular tecnique, almost seems written for him. Hats off. (But Jaco is still Jaco) ;-)
Same. I love both artists, and knowing the song intimately, cringed at the idea of a slap version, but he makes it work. I mean, he is Marcus Miller, after all 😁. I think it suffers from some ‘jam overindulgence’ in the second half, though. 🤔
Marcus was gonna be Jaco’s replacement the first time Jaco considered leaving Weather Report. And when they met for the first time, Jaco told Marcus, “Oh, so you’re the black kid that plays like me!”. I think that alone is a testament to Marcus’ true ability. He even said he can play every single Jaco song
Awesome performances all the way around. Looking foreword to seeing and hearing the videos from the haters and critics because legitimate criticism is a right earned by superior skills and ability, otherwise you're farting out of your mouth.
Marcus Miller might be the best bassist today. He seems to find many various ways to play that instrument beyond efficiently! Plus...He can play practically anything Jaco played.
: ) MERCI
I saw Dean Brown in Paris with Cobham in 1986. Billy was late. What a gig. Dean is a lot more loose and dangerous now. He used to look like Doug McClure.
Alistair Rhodes Slap bass and Fretted style is Marcus's thing. Thats why its a tribute. And not a "cover" he isnt trying to be Jaco by playing Fretless
I know it's more his style. I meant more as a general comment because on the occasion that he does break the fretless out, what he plays is amazing and this seemed like it could have been a great opportunity to play some fretless
Alistair Rhodes Yeah but Marcus playing it on fretted shows a respect for Jaco's playing i think. He knows he isnt going to exactly copy the way Jaco played it on the fretless. So he might as well do his style of fretted
I've heard a number of different versions of this tune but this has to be one that stands out for me. It's difficult enough to play this fingerstyle, but to slap, absolutely amazing. I don't play bass and didn't know slapping is more difficult. However, it just SOUNDS so much better when Jaco plays this tune, I think!
Marcus always wins
Think about his rendition of weather report’s what is hip!
This is the best for me to
There is 2 other versions, the one on The Sun Don't Lie studio album, and the one with Victor Wooten on some live.

wow that guitar solo from Dean Brown was ridiculously amazing
hiram, stern inspired!
I really like how Dean's solo sets the whole band off
Marcus helping keep Jaco's legacy alive.
its a great version but not a patch on jaco's original but much better than micheal manering
Joe Zawinul was the genius writer who, together with Jaco, composed this excellent jazz-rock fusion melody
how come he can play this song by slapping.. it's amazing.
And he can play it regular-like
That is *Tap* !!!
It’s actually a little bit easier because you can use the entire hand for doing multiple things at the time
Nah this is way easier on finger style. You can cover more stings and at a faster rate than slap.
@@zal8424 no. raking makes the song much easier. its still hard af
I can't stop watching this! Marcus, Dean, the drummer, all of these guys are so perfect together.
This man is the azimuth of bass as a lead instrument. He plays each note and phrase with conviction and precision, yet more soulful than anyone else in this genre.... Holy shit, that guitar solo was sick!!! Dean Brown FTW.
Loving Dean Brown's playing! He's just a cool dude. Always love Marcus. He's the man!
This is an excellent version by Marcus Miller. His style is way more different than Jaco's, but he pays real tribute to the song and takes it to a complete different level.

How can his thumb be still alive after this ?
MM is amazing.
damn i tried to play it like marcus and its actually harder xD
Edgar Cardona oh yeah it’s so hard to play slap, especially that cleanly
If you play slap you usually build up a skin or bone callous from the abrasion. It's small, but it helps prevent pain to the thumb for stuff like this. If you mean for stamina reasons, take a look at people like Les Claypool and Victor Wooten, being able to play slap at the high level live
Marcus is playing right and the pinnacle of his ability and it's so amazing to see someone push themselves to the limit. So good!
That Is Wicked!!!! Marcus is amazing. There's more the one way to play Teen Town for sure! This is a favorite of mine.
..... historical homage no matter WHAT way you look at it. RIP Jaco. Love ya Marcus. 👌🏼
As bananas as that guitar solo was, you can still hear th crowd screaming underneath it all.

I saw Marcus live at the Atlanta Jazz Festival. He is also an amazing fretless bass player.
Whoo! Dean Brown was rollin!
that has to be one the most amazing bass solos ever played
try checking out the OG who wrote the song aka Jaco Pastorius
Cassiano Wo
awesome guitar solo and great version
you still active on this channel ?

Amen 🙏🏼 with both the sacred and secular intentions

Although on camera it seems weirder that in real life hahaha
In an interview, he said that he originally got loads of hate mail for his rendition. I guess Jaco fans flipped their wig! 😝
Love Jaco's playing, some of his fans can be a bit much. Jazz has a long tradition of musicians playing each other's compositions, it's a sign of respect.

Love the old school Rhodes sound too. Everyone in this ensemble is ridiculous!
Love those chords 💫
It’s crazy cuz each person’s solo sounds exaccly like how they look hahahaha
Jaco is king, but goddamn that solo was nasty! And guitar solo was pretty freakin' sick as well!!
- Music is The BEST!
Totally agree ,in homage and Respect to the Master Jaco ,this is So Beautiful . Thanks Mr Miller ,Love it X
His musicness is as big as is arms. Marcus Miller, what a man. My hero.
Killer slap tone
Best bass player
Best guitar solo
Best band
Amazing!
It never ceases to amaze me what he can do, and how he can make fast finger funk into slap.
Gotta love how herbie just drops in at the end for a split second
I shouted outloud "HERBIE HANCOCK?!" and woke up my brother.
Marcus you take the cake!! Thank you for intense interpretention of teen town ❤️

Don't worry guys, Marcus can play it fingerstyle on fretted or fret less 😁
Marcus is King check our his resume, along Stanley Clarke Anthony Johnson.and the absolute king of them all Victor Wooton.

It's the Great Gerry Brown on drums!!!!!
A MASTER in his own right!!)) RESPECT
He’s plain & simple an unmatchable player
Man I agree hard enough to play this finger style let alone slapped. Go Marcus Go. Have always loved his playing
great arrangement, funky bass, amazing guitar solo
Would love to hear Les Claypool play this. Can’t imagine what it would sound like…. maybe with Buckethead playing rhythm and a solo
that hi-hat is so sweet. Dean Brown blows the roof off here with his solo
Marcus in his prime!
Oh Yeah! Great stuff...Marcus...Dean....the band.....phenomenal!!!!
Marcus did it up!!!!! Shows you theres more than one greatest bass player

Yup...awesome...slappi'n his way thru this is so cool...
Don't know why I was surprised; it's Marcus, of course he's gonna slap it, and it works . . . Brilliant!
this master,.....has another version of teen town, superb
Marcus Miller is a monster player as well... Nice to see someone add something to this piece as in slapping the Jaco melody....
I have this on CD. Great Stuff. His style is not something I'm a big fan of but I admire and respect him.
Awesome performances all the way around. Looking foreword to seeing and hearing the videos from the haters and critics because legitimate criticism is a right earned by superior skills and ability, otherwise you're farting out of your mouth.
That was amazing! Definitely required listening for anyone who is clueless about absolutely stanky funk.
Outstanding!!
Marcus Miller might be the best bassist today. He seems to find many various ways to play that instrument beyond efficiently! Plus...He can play practically anything Jaco played.
Amazingly inventive arrangement. It cooks!
Dean Brown killing it on guitar. May he rest in peace.
and the drummer who's still playing with his sticks!!!!

Him and Victor Whooten gotta be the hammer / slap bass players at the top of the heap! 🎸🎸🎧🎵
EXCELLENT RENDITION 👍BRUTHA MARCUS MILLER...👍👍👍👍👍👍👏
Marcus has got it goin' on! Lol btw at the end he quoted Slang. :)
Wow man! cover of Jaco with Slapp is a genius Miller!!
regardless of Dean Brown's actions on stage, nobody can say that solo wasn't awesome!
He always was a dancing machine - his rhythmic ability was just amazing, and he never left anything in the tank . He’ll be missed - what a player! ✊🏼
Ridiculous. So much skill packed in that 9mins and 21seec!!
I was kind of expecting to be disappointed coming here, but this is actually executed very well.
ya its groovy, at least i think so
I wish Jaco was here and they would talk about it
Man he absolutely destroyed that bass. Leroy with these juicy chords tho XD
Excelente el bajista de esta Banda y todos los demás felicidades 👍🎶🎶✌🏻🎶🙀🎶👌🎶👏🏽🎶
Just brilliant! :O
... Malgré l'inertie du début, une sacrée reprise de pêche sur le solo impeccable de Marcus... Comme d'habitude, j'ai envie de dire...
"No description available." -- exactly. Ending with 'Third Stone' is just fantastic. What a tribute. I am speechless.
I wonder what pedal Marcus uses the one sounds amazing with drive, this happens at 5:39
He slapped it!!!
This is the best bass thing to happen.
