@daifurii If you haven't read it yet, just wait till season 3 with me brother. I've read only up to where the anime ends and have been an anime only for 7 years. It'll be unbelievably hype to go into the 3rd season almost blind.
Subaru is my favorite character in fiction. The novels, where you can actually be in his head all the time, made me realize how exactly human he is and how much he developed. And arc 6 (season 3 part 2) will make people realize how great he is at least I hope so if they do the anime right.
Subaru is my second favorite protagonist only behind Okabe from Steins;Gate

He isn't omniscient, so he often finds himself lost and not knowing what to do.

He is a regular person, it's not easy to just get over the fact that you just died and the fact that you're likely going to die more times

Everyone who does not like Re:Zero always comes up with the same nonsense. "The MC is Weak, annoying and cries all the time". Thats exactly the point of Subaru and ReZero. Its reasonable that Subaru cries, due to the constant suffering he's going through. He sees the most important people in his live dying over and over again. It's not only the mental torture. There is also the physical torture he has to go through everytime he dies in the most brutal ways. Imagine being anfazed after all that and just move on like it never happend.
Subaru has no redeeming qualities. He has not done a single significant thing in his past life. His self worth became so low that he does not even care if he dies or puts himself in a dangerous situation. He is self aware yet can't see how others thing about him which is important in order to love himself. He has many flaws. He makes questionable decisions. He talks like a big deal, but can't back it up with actions (at least not right away). He is one of the, if not, the most realistic character in Anime.
Subaru Natsuki's biggest strength is his determination and will to save and protect everyone who is important to him. Every time he overcomes an obstacle, you feel genuinly happy for him.
Subaru will become one of the best Characters in many peoples eyes, similar to Thorfinn, after Arc 6. At least that is what i hope. I haven't read it myself, but only heard amazing things. (Pin pls)

re zero is one of my fav animes of all time and it pisses me off how many people write it off as "lame isekai with loser protag"
It's like that for a lot of anime and manga that test the sanity of the main character
I mean look at evangelion, I watched it recently and everyone says that shinji is a detestable protagonist and a wimp... well... yes, of course, he is 14 years old having to shoulder the burden of being one of the few people that can save the world from the angels, giant beings that could wipe humanity off the face of the earth in the blink of an eye if left unatended, so of course he's going to be a coward everytime he has to face against them and actually he isn't that much of a coward in most of the episodes, just mainly the beginning and end of the series
Also, yes, he is an asshole the series talks about that a lot of times and why he is like that
I love characters like shinji and subaru because they are a means to gaze into how a person breaks, what it does to their personality and life, subaru a lot of times ruins his relationships in season 1 because of the stress of not being able to tell anyone what happened, having to play his persona of the happy go lucky guy that he usually is when his mental state is being tested to its absolute limits and of course he is going to break at some points, that's the whole point and I find it super interesting, in general I really like these animes that dip their toes into psychological horror because the subject fascinates me and it's super interesting to see the interpretation of the author on the topic
I honestly hated it when people dropped the anime after ep 18 just because subaru said "i love emilia"

Coincidentally, I just started watching this one a few days ago, at the same time starting Konasuba, and this is the one that kept my attention. I just started season 2 last night. I haven't gotten any spoilers at all, so please don't spoil anything for me, fellow commenters, but I have a theory based on how Amelia introduced herself in the 1st episode. I think she is Satella, but the old story about her is a lie believed by all but her a small few who know the truth. I might be reaching though.
Not a spoiler since this came out way before S2 content.
There is a sidestory about the first loop. In it we get confirmed that she said she was Satella to scare off Subaru.
And is also the thing she wanted to say to him before entering the loothouse, that her real name is Emilia and not Satella.
And her last thoughts as she died in that loop were regret at not telling him her real name.

But Emilia was born 100+ years ago.

He does not a mass of Herman is a father figure to his realtor friend reality the show is more focused on Fran, then the protagonist master, because master is again a sword so he’s reality is supporting character, because every single aspect of the animes focused on Fran and even when he get screen time let’s focus on myself it’s all about free and still he’s objective is Fran. So that’s a bit different.

Re: Zero is a pretty good show. I am not sure why almost everyone getting hit by Truck-kun is a neet but Subaru do lack the annoying smugness most isekai protagonists have (how I hate that guy from "In another world with my smartphone").
The show also have another thing bad isekai stories lack: opposition that can actually win. In far too many isekai stories, the bad guys are just too weak to even hurt the protagonist and while that was fun to watch in Overlord it became very tiring fast.
I think I prefer White in "I'm a spider, so what?" but the anime adaptation of the light novels isn't as well done as it should be and they speed things through too fast. Yeah, White becomes powerful eventually but she isn't having an easier time then Subaru and earn any power she gets.
I still prefer regular fantasy to isekai though, they tend to be less annoying then most isekai stories.
Anyways, Re: Zero ? good but I don't think I would call Subary perfect. even though he is a good character.

RBD being a curse gets cranked to 11 later in the story (arc 7) where at one point he's stuck dying horribly literally within 20 seconds of his reset point. It doesn't state just how many times he dies, but whether it is dozens, hundreds, or thousands of times is irrelevant because he cannot escape until he overcomes the situation where as usual he is by far the weakest person there. Having to endure death once is almost too much for all who live, but this poor bastard😔

Re Zero is the worst written series of all time. It is a complete dumpster fire of a series. It also has a fanbase that is more toxic than the Steven Universe fandom by far.
Re Zero is complete garbage with a gary stu protagonist. Subaru is the ultimate gary stu. Before you make a rant about his time travel ability. I know and I don't care. Subaru even outside his time travel plot armor ability is a gary stu who comes out every battle with infinite plot armor and poorly written contrivance. And special nonsensical exceptions are made for him because he is the main character. The special exam area is only for Emilia. Well Subaru can enter because he is the main character.
Subaru is the textbook definition of a gary stu. He always gets everything he wants on a silver platter. Subaru's so called shortcomings has little to no consequences for him. Subaru has a little cry. Rem tells Subaru she loves him. Then Subaru gets over it and magically solves every problem. Subaru gets to do everything he wants with ease. Even if restrictions are put in place. Subaru gets to bypass them with ease because he is the main character. He gets nearly everyone on his side with ease and he can hold his own against foes who should be able to kill him in seconds.
Subaru never even tries to train his body to become stronger. Subaru never even tries to train to improve his physical abilities. He just relies on his infinite plot armor and his gary stu status to protect him from his enemies.
There is a lot more plot armor in Re Zero than any other show. You are a clearly delusional fanboy. Every battle in Re Zero ends with an asspull. Return From Death is plot armor. But when I say Subaru has infinite plot armor. I'm referring to the fact he can fight people who are a hundred times stronger than him and win because of plot armor. Subaru stays an annoying protagonist throughout the entire series. His so called "character development" was utterly uninteresting and completely boring. Subaru's backstory put me to sleep out of boredom.
And before you try to mention it. There is a large difference between a video game mechanic and a time travel mechanic that is a major plot line of a Literature series. The special exam is just for Emilia. And it is an asspull that Subaru can enter just because he wants to play the hero. On that note Subaru's time travel ability makes no sense. So a witch with god like power randomly fell in love with a random nobody like Subaru. For no conceivable reason other than plot. And hundreds of chapters & several spin offs in. No explanation is given for that.
The Time Travel ability has save points that randomly change for no real reason other than contrived & forced drama. All of the top seven witches talk to Subaru and help him for no conceivable reason other than Subaru is the main character so everybody likes him. Subaru is like Shirou Emiya and Kamijou Toma. He pulls several abilities out of his ass to win every battle. He has a massive harem full of girls who like him for no conceivable reason. Most of the cast like Subaru because he is the main character. There is even a spin off where Subaru kills off most of the people in the universe and gains the love and support of Elsa because everybody loves Subaru in Re Zero.
Every Witch goes out of their way to help Subaru because he is the main character. That's a fact. Subaru shouldn't be allowed in the trials in the first place. But he is randomly allowed and considered worthy because of his ultimate gary stu status and his infinite plot armor. Rem goes from hating Subaru to falling in love with him because Subaru futilely tries to kill some random animals. That isn't the slightest realistic. Emilia randomly invites Subaru to her house and falls in love with him just because. No real reason. Most girls in the series have a crush on Subaru for no real reason. Subaru is a gary stu.
Subaru doesn't solve any of his problems through intelligence or strategy. Every Gary Stu supposedly struggles with their enemies in every battle only to win through a massive asspull at the end of every battle. Subaru does exactly that. I don't care about any Subaru's deaths through his plot induced stupidity. Its forced and contrived drama. Especially when Subaru solves every problem through an asspull.
Subaru stays the exact same character throughout the series. A 1 dimensional gary stu plot device. He recklessly goes into danger. He tries to solve every problem through his many asspulls. Subaru's so called character development is that he cries a couple of times. Everyone feels sorry for him. Then Subaru magically solves the problem through a deus ex machina. Subaru doesn't get any more intelligent or try to be strategic. The plot literally bends to Subaru's whims. Subaru magically gets everything he wants on a silver platter. A mansion, A harem of girls, what basically amounts to immortality, magic superpowers, most people in the world liking him. Yet he thinks he's seen hell . Even though Re Zero uses the power of love & friendship even more than My LIttle Pony.
Subaru never actually learns from any of his mistakes. Subaru has never actually used any remotely intelligent strategy throughout the series. Two examples of such. First example is when he faces Elsa. He doesn't come up with any intelligent solution. He charges in recklessly. Then he magically fights against an assassin several times stronger than him and survives through plot armor for a long time before a deus ex machina comes to save him. The second example is when he wants to save Emilia from her trial. The rules of the universe bend to his whims so he can enter the trial and get help from all the witches. Re Zero is a poorly written Isekai series. Where Subaru does in fact pull the solution for every problem out of his ass.
Then there are the harem girls. Rem immediately falls in love with Subaru because of a suspension bridge effect. Despite Rem completely hating him earlier. Emilia immediately falls in love with Subaru after he is nice to him. That's a fact. Petra immediately falls in love with Subaru because he is nice to her and he saved her village. Echidna immediately fell in love with Subaru. Even the author states Echidna is in love with Subaru. Crusch Karsten says she has a romantic interest in Subaru because of his personality. Elsa who fell in love with Subaru in an alternate timeline spin off. To the point she fought a suicidal battle against Reinhard. Then there is Satella who completely fell in love with Subaru for no conceivable reason and gave him immortality by temporal reset abilities
He fights Elsa Granhiert several times and survives for a long time through his infinite plot armor. Even though warriors much stronger than Subaru were defeated by Elsa within seconds.
Subaru has always fought people a hundred times stronger than him and survived through asspulls and his infinite plot armor.
Steins Gate & Puella Magi use the concept of Time Travel much better. Where Re Zero just uses Time Travel as a free excuse to give their main characters infinite plot armor.
