I've had mine a few years now. Last year 3 new growths and three sheaths but no blooms. This year again, new growths with sheaths but so far, no buds showing. Mine is mounted and hung high so it gets very good light and dries fast and good temperatures - I think the 'care' is ok but it was a young plants so maybe it's only just getting to true blooming size. Now I've seen your blooms, I just can't wait!
Thanks so much for sharing these tips on your very BEAUTIFUL Cattleya maxima Brad, the blooms are spectacular and sending you heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic Sunday XXXXX
The maxima is one of the most exquisite species of Cattleyas... and the variety in this species is also incredible!! You have a nice specimen Brad, beautiful blooms!! :)
Amazing plant! Congrats on the bloom - hard work and relocation paid off ^^ Speaking of fantastic flowers, have you ever considered growing Amorphophallus? I currently grow one that had a small side-bulb on it with a separate leaf at time of purchase. Then, now a month down the line, it's given me a surprise FIVE new bulbs just this morning!! Would be willing to part with one or two this winter if you're interested :) It's Amorphophallus rivieri and it would love your greenhouse! (I just grow mine in my room, and give them lots of water)
Wow, so beautiful! :) Straight pumice, that's really interesting, never thought of that for orchids but makes sense. I've been trying to get some of that for my succulents and cactus.
How exciting! It looks lovely. I'm crossing my fingers that's the sheath my cattleya is producing will grace me with a spike. It's supposed to be a more compact grower and it's my first ever cattleya here's hoping.
Wow what an impressive display of flowers! Since it's responding well to warmer conditions, is this the lowlands variety? Your PBs are also getting much taller, which also indicates a lowland variety. Really surprised that there is no scent. Maybe it will develop in a day or so. I have the highland variety and have had no luck flowering it. Ecuagenera told me to give it more light, but it seems to need something else to trigger flowering. The few highland species I've seen flowering on the internet are mostly massive specimen plants, and so I'm not sure I've got the room to accommodate it to that stage. Too bad because I just love love the flowers. Yours are superb. Thanks for sharing.
68 is what mine gets at night, too because I grow it in my bedroom. It won't bloom if the nights are too long. Mine generally will bloom about 3 months after I drop the photoperiod to 12/12, which I try to do on December 1st. Then it will be in bloom for the first weekend of April, which is our orchid show. Interestingly my mossiae doesn't seem to care how long the nights are, even if they are pretty short.
Nice plant Brad, I don't have any Cattleya plants, although I have often wondered whether or not I could provide the right conditions. I think the flowers look like giant Pleione flowers.
Beautiful! How do you like the pumice? I have a Cattleya in pumice that is growing wonderfully but I wasn't sure if maybe it's just the plant, with the humidity where I live drying out is rarely an issue.
Hi Brad! Liked the video! I was just wondering how I can get my phalaenosis to rebloom or re-spike. I was told to give it cooler temps for 2 weeks during fall but I just wanted to get a second opinion! Thank you
Sorry this is a bit off topic, but I just bought a no ID nepenthes seedling and it is starting to produce really small green leaves. It's growing in a ziplock bag and always produces pitchers. It gets 2 hours of sun and its growing in peat moss and perlite.I hope you can help me :)I LOVE YOUR AMAZING PLANTS BRAD!!:)
