Lazy Game Reviews I'm Glad you finally played The Dig, one of the hardest Point and click adventuer games I have ever played, but I loved every secound of it.
Oh man, I love Brom's work. I still have all my boxes and extensions from AD&D Dark Sun campains. He did most of the artwork for these and they look awesome!
Banjo Guy Ollie oh hell ya :D nothing beats 2nd Edition AD&D! Brom did some good Magic the Gathering cards too... Mostly from the Mirage and Tempest Block.
Yeah, I remember seeing one of my favorite Magic cards with the illustrator just given as "Brom" and was really curious. Later I somehow found out he drew the Doom II cover!
The Brothers Hildebrandt and the late Keith Parkinson (RIP) were among my favorite artist doing box art. Love the Ultima Online box art, and had that panoramic battle scene the Hildebrandts did as my wallpaper for years, and Keith's art for the Everquest boxes were so beautiful, it almost felt like false advertising that the game itself looked nowhere near as detailed back then.
What I really loved back then were the little screenshots at the back of the boxes. I don't know how much time I spend in electronic stores just looking at the small screenshots at the back of the boxes as a child :D
Wow I've seen Ken Kelly's art everywhere (Manowar, video game box art etc.) but never knew who it was that made the art. I am eyegasming on his website right now! It's just... so... Metal! Keep at it LGR, your videos are awesome!
He was also responsible for most of the in-game artwork; while striking in still imagery, his art style doesn't really lend itself well to picking out motion of any sort.
I've always loved the Legacy of Time box art. I remember seeing it in a store as a kid, knowing nothing about the game, but wanting to play it just because of the cover. Turns out it was a pretty rad game too.
The early cover art of gaming is unbeatable. Especially the fact that all of these talented and classic artists contributed to them. Great job for recording these for posterity! I enjoyed it with my morning coffee.
Hey that's actually almost proper japanese! Without going into much detail, the problem is as follows: Chinese characters (Kanji) as used in japanese have two ways of being read, the so-called chinese way and the japanese way. The problem is that the cover mixes up the two. For compound words made of two kanji (save for some exceptions that don't apply here), you would usually go with the chinese reading for both characters. In this case, DAI is effectively 大's chinese reading, but here they're using the japanese spelling for 刀: KATANA. They should have gone instead with the chinese reading, TOU, resulting in DAITOU. That's the natural way of reading it. Now, I'm assuming they didn't want to drop KATANA from the title for obvious reasons, so they could have gone instead with the japanese reading for both resulting in OOKATANA. That could work out as the name of an unique sword, altough proper japanese for big sword must be 大きい刀. Neither do pack the punch of DAIKATANA, but at least they make more sense. 大: Big 刀: Sword
Diego Pablos Little to add here. Great description. It's essentially somewhere between a spelling error and creative freedom. While not entirely correct I think it is comparable to stuff like "Phantasy Star".
pocpic well, that is indeed true, and specially common in manga, but the thing is that in your example desutinii is not an alternate reading of the kanji, but a foreign borrowed word where the kanji just carries the meaning. Imagine if in your example the furigana read uninochi instead... would have been odd
pocpic Well, considering that "napukin" in japanese means "maxipad" and not napkin, I'm not surprised at all! :) However, I still think that those cases are more akin to the author wanting to clarify further. One thing that comes to mind, altough not exactly the same, is when you find a character in a manga saying お前, but where the """furigana""" spells the name of the character to which the お前 is the referred to. I mean, it is pretty obvious that the kanji shouldn't be read like that; it just clarifies the context. I'm guessing that here the case is kind of similar, because most likely the author didn't want people to interpret desutinii as anything other than "fate". P.S.: Whereas they're indeed different, the difference between "fate" and "destiny" could be rather subtle depending on the context. For example, in my native language, there are no separate words for each, you just have to clarify further if needed. So this could have been a case of an author's honest mistake; I wouldn't be surprised if a Japanese dictionary lists 運命 as destiny as well. Heck, I just tried jisho.org and it clearly says: Noun 1. fate; destiny; lot P.S.2: The things I do to avoid studying for my finals...
pocpic Diego Pablos "Except when the creator of the piece says that it should be read as daikatana." -- I assume this to be the case, as is common WRT people's names.
Diego Pablos You explained it quite nicely I'd say, and that matches what I've read as well! It's not quite 100% correct, but looks cool and works okay enough for their purposes. :)
I miss big boxes, I remember going with my folks to the local mega-mart and being awestruck at the wonderful designs and creative art that many of them had, kind of a shame what we have now though.
Love your enthusiasm on box art! I'm the same as you the 90's box art in games just has this special timeless quality. Great vid and killer collection!
As someone born in '93 and used to stroll the aisles of "THE INCREDIBLE UNIVERSE" (Fry's Electronics of now) with my dad... I love your videos. It brings me back to those moments where my young mind was enthralled and sometimes terrified of these amazing, 90s art pieces. Need myself a DeLorean time machine--- need to see Dante's Peak again in theaters and buy myself these relics.
Awesome that someone is finally highlighting these artists. I've tried to look up game box artists in the past and been unable to find much info. Thanks for doing the research!
I may have been a kid born in 1998 but for some reason I remember seeing Witchaven on a shelf as a 2 year old...I thought it looked really scary back then being a little kid and I just didn't want to look at it, but nowadays I see this and think it's actually pretty awesome. A dark tone indeed, but with much action...how I wish it were possible to recapture that new and wondrous feeling of older games nowadays.
Woo! The Dig! One of my favorite point and click adventure games. It's so atmospheric filled with such a subtle feeling of dread the whole time you play. Plus, the music is super awesome!
That Simon Bisley cover is from the Slaine McRoth comic books. In fact, that main guy with the helmet actually looks like Slaine, just without some of his signature decorations.
I really enjoy this series. Seeing all these boxes again brings back a lot of nostalgia. I can't tell you how excited I was to see the Doom II box on the store shelf when I was a kid. The Star Wars Dark Forces box was pretty awesome as well.
These artists are so incredibly talented. I would love large versions of some of these to hang on my wall. Also enjoying these episodes, keep them coming.
I agree. The Quake logo is ingenious! It's awesome! It's one of a kind! I also like the Quake 2 and 3 logos as well. I ever wondered how the Quake 4 logo will look like. The first three logos inspired me to draw a few variations of Quake 4 logo back then (but I don't remember where my drawings are, if not wasted).
Man, every time I watch one of these box cover videos, it makes me want to go back to the mid-90's-early 2000's and browse around my local PC store for games. It was such a different world back then. Alas it is (mostly) gone.
The Dig's box cover very much could have been used as a teaser poster for an upcoming Sci-Fi film, imagine seeing it up in a cinema for upcoming releases, its just simple and it works, one of my favourites especially when it has the tagline "in the dead of space, something is alive"
:D - The Beast Within cover reminded me (a little) of the cover for The Frighteners, in particular the European Blu-Ray version; but only a little. The Civilization one looked like (on screen at least) it was growing out of the sand; at least a little. Another great video in this series of best/worst cover art!
This is a really interesting series, it reminds me of when I was a kid, I used to spend hours in the shops just looking at the PC game boxes imaging the games based on their covers.
the first System Shock box art was very striking to me. a cyborg that's looking right through you, and strangely compelling you to go into the world the game is creating.
It's a shame that modern PC games aren't sold in stores with amazing box art, informative yet great looking manuals and some exclusive content. I'm not sure if there are some exceptions but, at the stores near me I've only seen cool boxes for WoW expansions and Starcraft 2.
Expand Dong To be fair, I would prefer no physical manual and instead having a file you could open with the info. It's just better for everyone. I think Nintendo has been doing it for a while now.
Kanchi .Haruhara I don't understand why that's "better for everyone". Personally it makes far more sense to have something you can have next to you and flip back and forth through, in my opinion. The only reason it wuld be better to have it on the disc is so you can't separate the game from the manual, but that hasn't been a problem for me since I turned, like, 11.
JazGalaxy It is better. It won't break or deteriorate, it's way cheaper for them and no need to waste paper. The biggest value a physical one has is just nostalgia.
Kanchi .Haruhara Well, I guess that's more of a subjective thing to want. In my opinion I really do enjoy reading through physical manuals. My PS2 version of MGS3 had this neat little comic section that taught players about hunting food in the jungle. It was a great touch that just enhanced my experience with the game even more.
If I had unlimited money, I would make sure my house had a single room that was decorated with posters, toys, electronics, music, computers and games that were available and were the SHIT in '96 or '97. I'd just go there and pretend it's that year, and I'd boot up my brand new Pentium 133MHz and play some awesome games. I want to pretend!
Zeithri I'd stay well before 3D accelerators. I'd have some awesome Matrox 2D card and go with it. I'd roleplay a piggy bank with the label "3D Card" on it, because I'm 12 and I'm poor. Awesome.
blackblob500 If that has 3D acceleration, then no. I would want a 2D card, although at that time it would most likely be a Matrox card anyway. 1 to 2mb VRAM.
excellent series of videos, i came across it when someone recommended i watch them because i had done a watercolor painting based on the civilization 1 cover; nice to see you share my thought that it's a great cover. one note, though -- the japanese on the daikatana cover isn't just mumbo-jumbo. the two characters are just dai and katana, and it means literally 'big katana' or 'big sword'
Love that Mechwarrior cover. One thing I'll always remember about it is the first time I saw a MadCat was in an issue of Star Log, where someone had incorrectly captioned the photo as "ED-209."
I love these freaking boxes. I regret throwing out all of mine so many years ago :( Need to start tracking them down again through eBay and whatnot, especially the Sierra series had amazing artwork.
It's awesome that you credited the actual artists that made these! It would've been cool to see the Might&Magic games (Xeen era), as to my knowledge the guy who drew the map and cover arts is actually a somewhat well known artist. Oh and you really should dedicate an entire episode to Psygnosis cover art some time. Hell I'd do it myself if I had all their games, but Agony and many others are expensive.
You know after following you for a while now i love the way you show off your PC boxes it makes me feel old back in the days when you walked too a store and saw the big boxes and inside them wasa small CD or a floppy Disc i iss the 80s and 90s alot tbh it was the best year of gaming :P
I found Alone in the Dark 1/2 along with some other mostly DOS games at at thrift this weekend, all big box and all $3 each. In addition to the cool covers, they both have neat physical copy protection.
Great video! Game boxes are not the same these day. The old boxes would evoke a certain mood or tone that would represent the games content but now they just lack something
I have always liked the Mechwarrior box art, and I remember getting MechWarrior 2 for the same reason, the box looked awesome to me. While you showed box art with monsters on them, one such box art I have always liked is the PC box art for Summoner, with the big white monster coming though the trees.
I met Ken Kelly years ago at a comic convention in Rhode Island. Funny guy. His art really walks the line between super badass and pulp cheesiness, ahaha.

How can you post so much porn on RUclips without getting flagged? ;D
3:44 the Gabriel Knight: Beast Within cover almost would have reminded me of a possible cover for a nostalgic & classic horror movie & novel of the 20th century.
ZPC is way over-due for a next-gen remake. The chief writer and designer, Aidan "Brute" Hughes, had such a heavy-metal design document and graphic ambitions, and the aging Marathon engine just didn't live up to it. Thanks for video!
If you liked the ZPC cover, then you would absolutely LOVE the other works by the artist who did that cover. Aidan Hughes did the work and he is most well known for doing the album art of KMFDM's albums and all of them are freaking amazing.
This got me thinking about pc games I had back in the day, one of my absolute favourites was a game called Take No Prisoners, it had really memorable artwork and the gameplay was awesome. I expect you probably have a copy but if not check it out, great game!
Awesome video again. Box art of old games was so cool. Sad it is gone for good. Today almost everything look same, overproduced and lack the soul and spirit.
Wow, this was literally a slideshow of my favorite artists. Bisley, Brom, Ken Kelly. Just need some Boris Vallejo, Richard Corben, Vaughn Bode, and Arthur Suydam, and it'd be perfect.
***** I started to get more into this kind of art recently and this video (and your comment) showed me a few more artists that I didn't know about with some amazing art. My favorite is Frank Frazetta and I'm also a big fan of Drew Struzan too (and, speaking of awesome game box arts, Roger Dean).
Excellent to see D2. I remember (having been raised rather strict conservative Christian) being firmly warned away from the supposed evil influences of that game, and still being almost hypnotically drawn to it on store shelves. And for years after its release too. It just stuck out so well, with that piercing devil stare, and the perfect composition, and color scheme. It's still one of the coolest box designs around.
Just watched this after seeing the new one I've only recently found your videos and they are great. I get the feeling though from the neuromancer bit that you don't know William Gibson. If you haven't read Neuromancer it is an amazing Sci Fi novel. Johnny Neumonic was written by him as well hence why the artist probably worked on that too. The movie is pretty poor compared to the books. Neuromancer is interesting because it was the book that inspired Timothy Leary to tell his friends to make a game about it, and that game was Deus Ex! Keep up the great work.
Quake is my favorite box cover in the 90's era. I had plans of getting the Quake logos tattooed on me but... Im a wimp. I love piercings, I had a bunch of them but tattoos isnt my thing apparently.
Quake is definitely my favorite box art from the 90's as well. Whenever I see it, I get that dark feeling and really miss that game. Such a great soundtrack by Trent Reznor (NIN)! I would love symbol as a tattoo as well but, like you, I am also a little bit of a wimp when it comes to getting tats. Maybe one day... ;) Cheers!
One box I really liked was from the WOTLK expansion fo wow, also the Diablo 1 box since its simple but the face of Diablo was cool enough, remember my father bought me Diablo 1 when I was 11 on a Toys R Us for 9 bucks.
LGR any chance you could upload pictures of all your covers somewhere? like a photo library, heh you said you were considering a museum of some kind, would love to browse them all at my own pace, brilliant, would be quite a bit of work, it would have real value though
robbafett Generally they had awesome covers, Loom, the Dig, Fate of Atlantis. The only one I can think of that phoned it in was the Last Crusade cover, with just a photograph close-up of Indy and his Dad just looking forward. I can forgive it though since they included a physical copy of Henry Jones' actual freaking grail diary!
Box art then: wildly creative and inspiring.
Box art now: guy holding a gun looking into the distance.
Matthew Champlain it would!
Tytygigas, the guy who argues a lot *insert bioshock infinite box art reference you probably know the whole story about anyways.....
***** i actually was thinking about that box in particular lol
Tytygigas Or if it's a game set in medieval times it's a guy kneeling with his sword in the ground.
Tytygigas you forgot about orange and blue everywhere.
Some great boxes here. Really glad you showed The Dig. It really stood out when I first bought it as well.
MetalJesusRocks Thanks! That one in particular is just striking, standing out among the other Lucasarts games.
Lazy Game Reviews I'm Glad you finally played The Dig, one of the hardest Point and click adventuer games I have ever played, but I loved every secound of it.
Lazy Game Reviews I think it's time to review the mechwarrior games.
20 years of Mechwarrior 2.
Woah, did one of my favorite channels just comment on one of my other favorite channel's videos? (RUclipsception)
Very cool that you digged out the artists behind the covers, they're sadly far too often unknown to so many of us!
Riverhill Dat profile pic XD
A Husky From Finland As it happens, I'm from Finland too! :-D Husky power! /highpaw
Well hello! Fancy meeting someone like you here :)

thank you for including quake 2 box!
Quake 2 box = minimilizim to PERFECTION
The first 2 quake covers will always look amazing!

the Mechwarrior 2 box art brings the nostalgia. First PC game I ever played... Thanks, cool uncle (with the Packard-Bell PC).
damn I miss boxes... DAMN YOU STEAM

ZPC art was painted by Aidan Hughes btw. He's well known for KMFDM album arts.

I really enjoyed this video. Really well-researched and beautiful covers. And now I have a couple of artists, whose work I have to check out.
Soren Sorensen Glad to hear it :)

YES! Mechwarrior 2 is SO GOOOD!! The intro, tooo!!
Those are some really cool examples of videogame packaging; also I really appreciate that you give credit to the artists.
"Alone in the Dark"'s cover looks so awesome.
These sort of videos make me happy to be a game collector.
Jonathan Chapman And making them cements that I made the right choice in becoming one!
Love 'The Dig' box.

I would be glad to see your best racing covers. ;)
I found Alone in the Dark 1/2 along with some other mostly DOS games at at thrift this weekend, all big box and all $3 each. In addition to the cool covers, they both have neat physical copy protection.
'Those of us that remember it....well, we remember it'
Poetic
Back when big boxed games were on the shelves I couldn't afford them. Now when I want big boxed games there's ebay where I still can't afford them.
Great video!
Game boxes are not the same these day. The old boxes would evoke a certain mood or tone that would represent the games content but now they just lack something
Lots of cool boxes :)
Ok, I have to admit that being impressed by the classy look of Mr Brom was the last thing I've expected from the video about game cover art oO
How can you post so much porn on RUclips without getting flagged? ;D
Wow. Mech Warrior 2 was included with our Mac OS 8 when I was a kid. That's nostalgic.
i asked 5 years agora, now i ask again, please do a PART 4 OF THIS!
man that brought me back seeing the heretick Box and the Doom 2 Box and the witchHaven box mmm classic memory
3:44 the Gabriel Knight: Beast Within cover almost would have reminded me of a possible cover for a nostalgic & classic horror movie & novel of the 20th century.
I really don't know if anything like that from the cover actually appears anywhere in the game as far as chapters are concerned.
Man I wish I had a collection like that XD I envy you for it. Awesome video :)
Omg you showed the beast within! One of my all time favorite pc games.
Good stuff man. Its to bad everything is going digital. I love game cover art. And all the goodies in the box.
Hey glad to see someone else recognized his work! Still one of my favorite designers / illustrators.
That Doom 2 box is excellent!
Man, you have the boxed version of GODS that is freakin' awesome. Love that game!
LGR you should be an announcer, you're good at talking and your voice is cool.
Always liked the Alone in the Dark cover :)
It invites you in!
John Romero sent you a signed Daikatana box? Whoa.
That Darius shirt man, is lovely.
I will like also to have my Big Box PC collection just because... the boxes are awesome.
4:45 This artwork is so Frazetta... it's also so Molly Hatchet!
That's why I love Ken Kelly!
I think the *Total Annihilation* franchise has amazing box arts.
I wish you would've shown them as well. But...oh well...
Oh wow, I didn't know that classic Doom II cover was by Brom! He's one of my favorite Magic card artists.
1:22 That's not BROM, that is the Dude Lol, Great vid LGR
That Beast Within box art reminds me of Pink Floyd. XD
I can always count on Clint to pronounce "Infogrames" correctly.
Ghost81 I do my best!
Clint you are indeed living the dream
Just watched this after seeing the new one I've only recently found your videos and they are great. I get the feeling though from the neuromancer bit that you don't know William Gibson. If you haven't read Neuromancer it is an amazing Sci Fi novel. Johnny Neumonic was written by him as well hence why the artist probably worked on that too. The movie is pretty poor compared to the books. Neuromancer is interesting because it was the book that inspired Timothy Leary to tell his friends to make a game about it, and that game was Deus Ex! Keep up the great work.
More of these please! Good stuff :)
Maybe one day... ;) Cheers!
This video reminds me of wandering media play's Bad ass PC game section in the 90's.
One box I really liked was from the WOTLK expansion fo wow, also the Diablo 1 box since its simple but the face of Diablo was cool enough, remember my father bought me Diablo 1 when I was 11 on a Toys R Us for 9 bucks.
wasn't there an uncensored version of Gods, with blood gushing out of the necks? (10:20) Or my memory starts to fail me?
LGR any chance you could upload pictures of all your covers somewhere? like a photo library, heh you said you were considering a museum of some kind, would love to browse them all at my own pace, brilliant, would be quite a bit of work, it would have real value though
Angus The Man God Mobygames has all of them already scanned :)
A great video again! Keep it up man!
o.d.t. everytime i see that side panel i get excited. probably not as great as i remember it. but it was fun at the time.
Neuromancer sound track by DEVO?! FUCKING AWESOME!!
You're truly beyond excellence, LGR! Query: That's quite the catchy tune in the beginning of your video. Is that your creation?
Nope! I always link to the songs used in the video description.
I just feel like lucas arts nailed every box art.
robbafett Generally they had awesome covers, Loom, the Dig, Fate of Atlantis. The only one I can think of that phoned it in was the Last Crusade cover, with just a photograph close-up of Indy and his Dad just looking forward. I can forgive it though since they included a physical copy of Henry Jones' actual freaking grail diary!
