Dude you are serously the best HVAC tec on RUclips. I have been a tec for a year and a half and i see sooo manny guys who do not know how to wire up a motor properly even my boss who is a great tec of 30 years had no clue untill i showed him. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I just watched this video and you point out timeless issues with repairs & installs. I've been working with too many people who seem to feel that getting the job done is more important than doing it right.
Too many technicians out there focused on wham bam fix it and move onto the next call. They don't care about the products they use, hurry up the job, leave things in a mess etc.
It is 11:30pm in Phoenix. It is 89 degrees in my living room and the forecast high tomorrow is 111. This video just saved the day!! Thank you for clarifying the 4-wire to 3-wire schematic and allowing me to turn on my new condenser fan!
Hey thanks, you helped me to wire my motor correctly and avoid a big repair bill! My house is cool again!
Thank you very much. This helped me understand the different wires. I also didn't know i could use the dual cap.
thank you so much for the video I really appreciate it. I recently purchased the house and the air conditioner had problems since day one. I was finally able to do away with all the trash that they left in my box. Thanks again
Excellent step by step. just installed my fan motor thanks to you. Saved myself $600
Thank you your explanation on installing an aftermarket motor & putting it on you tube it really helped me out❄️❄️❄️
Thanks for the help and clearing up how to do that properly. I may be new at this but I want to do things right
Thank you for your video. I was able to wire my unit and it's up and running.
Just watched both videos I've been In the field 5 months and 9 months of schooling. And I've been changing these cfm and adding another cap just for the cfm. And I did have the reversing motor wires hanging but use electrical tape so the sun want beat those wires and then zip tie them to the fan grill. But now the 3/4 pvc is how I will be doing it from now on. Great video I've learned something today. I've been watching all your videos in the last 14 months.
Really appreciated this video today man. Thanks!!
Great video man!. I'm glad someone finally posted a video about how to do it right. I see so many videos of so called professionals doing the job wrong. It's so easy to do it right, but I guess they just don't care or don't know better.
Thank you for the simplicity of the recommendations. Was stuck as to what to do with the extra wire; was about to do what you said, remove the F wire from the dual. But I like your way better than having to use 2 CAPS. no good place to put second cap by the wire asembly /Fan in my package unit.
Why am I just seeing this guys videos he's awesome
I am glad you placed this video up so I can compare what a real professional is to a wanna-be. Thank you. I recently had a wanna-be AC repair guy come to my house and did a crappy job replacing my fan. Let's not get into what didn't he do correctly because it will be a novel when I am done writing. Glad real AC professional exist in this world.
Great vid Ralph. I worked on a friends A/C a couple of years back where the run cap bandit struck and for some reason or another someone felt like they just HAD to extend almost all the wires in the Heat Pump and the air handler and they just couldnt find it in themselves to use matching colored wires. I ended up with the units full of wire nuts that were connecting green extention wires (And other colors) onto a black wire and every other combination you could think of. There were so many colors in there that Crayola would be jealous. I actually took all that crap out and even installed a terminal strip to make it easier and look better. Gonna check out the install vid now.
I bet the time you were working you were like WHY!!!!
Keep up the good vids , I always enjoy them and have a good Easter.
Thanks Justin!!!! Happy Easter to you too.
Your right Ralph. We young people are inspired to do good job like you do. Keep it up and thanks a lot.
Thanks Kurt, I'm glad as I know the other guy's are that you guy's enjoy our stuff.
Agree about the exposed wires!
Good stuff Ralph. Make it pretty, do it correctly!
I agree Stephen, do it correctly
Nice to see a true professional!
thank you it has been very helpful i happen to have the same setup best video explained.
I agree on all points !! Great video !! Take care, Brett
Working like a champ thank you so much for all your help your a life saver wished you were close by i would buy you a case of beer for your troubles
No problem where in Texas
Like the vid.. Learn something new every day.. Like a clean job. Will do on my next job..

Nicely explained. Thank you,
Ironically looked At David Jones video and he promotes the funky way, wires hanging and above the housing, Good Job Ralph
Omg I had the motor was going to install it myself but all the videos I saw no one explained it like you. Had to have the AC mechanic come and do it for me. He did the to capacitor crap. And tied the reverse like you said but the reverse wire had a rubber connector that insulated the wires. I’ll get some heat shrink and cover it up.
Some people don’t have pride in there work.
Thank you, best video and description I’ve seen
Great video Ralph, make it clean and save the customer some money is what it is all about. Keep up the good work.
Ray
Thanks for sharing Ralph loved it
Thanks Harry
In short...the 4 wires on the condenser motor are for installing it with one capacitor for the fan only. (not using a dual run set up). Some techs believe two caps are a better over the long term set up vs. a dual run. Not so sure on that idea.
Great video, very informational, I really like the part where you use a dual run cap, instead of putting another single cap.
Watching you reminds me of myself, I've been an electrician for years, and I've always felt like if there is any job worth doing then it is worth doing it right, Make it look professional and do a good installation, and you won't have any call backs. How does this work on a heater board? Thanks from Texas
Great vidio, well explain and simple.
What a great video 📹to learn alot good information
Back in the 80's, we never stocked dual-run capacitors. None of the companies that I worked for ever stocked them on the trucks. I do remember seeing a few dual run capacitors at the supply house but I never bought one.
Thank you sir! You just answered my question and saved me from pounding my head on the wall further! You are amazing!!!
Good Job man!
sweet thanx for sharing!!!!
T & N - thanks for the information. I’m about to install a new fan motor on one of two identical Lenox units. The motor I have to replace has been outfitted with a separate capacitor. Not sure why the service-tech decided the motor needed its own capacitor?
Wow thanks
For the way you explain
Exelent
I like your comments on the wiring and using a new dual run capacitor. I just changed my fan motor and used a second capacitor for the new motor(properly mounted in a bracket). I would have liked to have changed the dual run and just have one. Problem was, all the ratings on the capacitor were faded into oblivion, so I can't tell what size cap I need. The model number of this 20 year old Rheem is also sun-bleached. Is there a good way to tell what size capacitor I need for the Copeland compressor model # ZR28KCPFV-230?
The reason guys run the direction wires on top of the grill is so it can be reversed if its spinning the wrong direction without having to remove the top again. Maybe everybody already knows that but I didn't see it in the comments. Not saying it's right, just saying.
Sweet video man I believe it will help people
Darn right Ralph!! I know this a pet peeve in HVAC!! But in general I wished more people would put stuff back the way they found it, if that's not possible make it safe and look nice!!
-Mike
Hey Mike, I've got a couple of pet peeves, LOL wires tied together outside of the air handler, strapped run caps and the reversing wires from a motor outside of the grill.
Great video
Excellent one Ralph.
Thanks Rob
Since I purchased a new motor and it came with a single 10. Do I remove my old dual 5 or do I go out and buy a dual 10 or how can I use the 5 dual and add the new 10cap to the unit ?
Thank you for your time
You sir are a Professional.
I'm subscribing.
Did Oliver get it?
Wow so its even hotter there so ya know what i was feeling lol once again thank you so much for you help god bless
Your welcome Good luck to you
Nice one Ralph I'll b stealing the sleeve idea lol guy I work for just leaves them out in the open I asked him one day why don't we secure them some how he said I've been doing this 30 years he's one of those guys that saying comes into play u can't teach a old dog new tricks keep the videos coming
Hey Jim, I'm glad this helped, just bite your tounge. Keep doing what you do and keep watching.
What do you do with the little black plugs on either side of the motor?
So you just isolate the brown white wire to make it a three wire system?
I have the same motor coming out of my condenser has 2 brown wires,1yellow & 1black,the new motor im using has 2 browns,1yellow,1red,1blue & 1black, which wires will be used to replace old motor?
Nice vid! Not much help for me though. I got a start capacitor, a run capacitor and a replacement motor with white, black, red, brown, brown w/stripe, and of course a green ground. It's a one fan speed system. Having too much is just as bad as having not enough. Good tip about the reversing wires, I'll use that. I'll keep looking.
IT WORKED!
How do you determine which wires are hot and how do you determine where they hook up at?
Not even mentioning the ice and snow getting on the connectors in the north.
So on my new motor I would just put black to common, brown to fan, and yellow to herm?? Just wanna make sure
Ralph, great video. Lol, I been shocked before from some dumb ass leaving the reversing wires outside the top grill area. And man it's not fun! Sure lite me up! But thanks again
Thanks Mike, I can thankfully say I've only been zapped twice, both have been becuase the customer was standing there talking to me and I forgot to pull out the disconnect. You should seen how fast they went inside.
What if it's a heat pump? Does one of the wires go to the defrost board
I have seen that on roof tops I thought they weren't sure if they wired it correctly, I know it's a year late but good video
My compressor comes on but not my fan if i unhook the 2browns the compressor will not run how long is the delay from when the compressor kicks on to where the fan will kick on
Where's that link you talk about in this video?
I replaced my York condenser fan motor. Looked pretty simple. It was. AC company wanted $725 to do it. Now here's the problem it vibrates. I've played with it trying to figure out why. I used a universal motor. I called Johnston using company discount. I told them my AC model # and I got motor and capacitor. The only thing I can think of is there's something wrong with the fan blade. It's not cracked. I got it to stop vibrating last Friday but noticed it was making an awful whoop whoop sound today. I wonder if I remove the fan blade and see how it sounds without it? I was also wondering if I should just find an OEM motor instead? All the info from guys at HVAC shop guys at work say they use universal motors. The rpm is 1075 instead of 1090 but even the guys at Johnston say it's no issue. Any thoughts on this?
All you got to do is....slide those reversible wires, in the original sleeve, from the other motor, one at a time... and they fit perfectly, looks professional, no extra work needed, bing...bang....boom...done
Ok got ya
Good video love it Ralph ...some people need to slow down a little. In a recent video from Las Vegas I thought I was in a nascar pit stop. It was brutal
That's the video I watched Joe
If only we could talk about your choice of Asian parts! Lol
Joe Shearer LOL Joe, those parts are everywhere you turn. Hard to get a way from them
Ain't that the truth
Hey buddy lotta guys aren’t cutting the shaft on the motor where it hangs down an extra 6 inches or more. Isn’t it going to cause a problem with Oscillating And vibration.
i seen a video years ago was an austrailian user either aussie50 or v8jagnut was an old Lennox unit he changes the us dual run cap with two seperate caps and get the unit to run and says the US twist on wirenuts are not legal in Australia. as there the frequency of the line voltage as most parts of the world are 50 hz as here the US and others its 60 hz as some dual rated run caps can be rated 50-60 hz.
i have a problem with my fan motor won't turn off. i change the one pole contactor 40 amp and disconnect the 24 volt wire on the thermostat, fan motor still won't shut down. also my compressor won't come on, fan motor only shut down if i pull the breaker, been like that for 2 yrs.
Oliver didnt miss any meals
LOL! Fat shaming a dog. He can't help it. He's riding the gravy train.
Ive replaced condenser motor twice & is acting up on 3rd one, liquid line is so hot then normal, ive replaced contactor, capacitor & still same issues,3rd motor overheating plz help..
saludos brother como se hace la instalacion electrica de ese aire fan compresor contactor condensador ecter ecte
Thank you brother, like the professionalism you are pushing for, that's the way to do it.
I saw a cap a while back that someone had just mounted to the inside of the condenser my making a big patch out of duct tape and plastering the duct tape patch over the cap and onto the panel.
It's funny the things people do. sometimes it takes more to to do it the wrong way then do it the right way. If one person sees this and changes because of it. I've help make our world a better place.
good advice
Thanks Al!!!!
T&N Services LLC. but now I have to admit after watching the vid you were talking about I would have left the original cap and just used a new 5mfd like he did. Probably would have strapped it and taped the reversing wires but you have to stop somewhere. Its like doing a boiler replacement. How far back are you going to cut. Some guys myself included like to go all the way back to the ceiling. Others cut near the boiler. Whats better for the customer? I think my way. How many jobs do I lose because they are much cheaper? Many I imagine, They dont care so long as it works. I make more money later fixing the old shit they leave behind. Everyone has their own way of doing things. Now that I see what you were saying about the little piece of pipe I will try it next time. Hopefully soon but with the weather we are having I cant even imagine doing a no cool call.
You better get ready for the no cool calls Al, they are coming fast, once they get here there is no going back!!!! I won't rebuild the unit but I will install 1 cap. It's a pet peeve of mine.
That's hard to believe, maybe they are new b's. I agree with the wires outside the fan gaurd, so many people do that. Looks bad. And the loose capacitor is a obvious big NO, very dangerous and could short out on the unit electicuting someone or possibly frying your condenser.
Cool been a long while since i been through there where bouts you located now
I'm in Georgia now
Can I use the two brown wires on the capacitor and cap off the yellow instead (browns have ends on them Yellow is bare end)? Had a three wire, new motor has four. Its a rheem with two two spot capacitors. not a dual run cap. will it hurt anything using both browns instead of yellow brown? seems to b running fine?
I've never done it like that but I suppose it would work since the brown with the white strip is L2.
Thank you.
i've worked behind the run cap bandit so many times i've lost count
Nice video. What was in the dog house?
It was a black cat. I thought he was in the very end of the video
Nice video, that seal tight or conduit for reversing wires is a great idea.
Thanks DC!!!!
ok im confused I have hooked everything up the way it came off and my compressor runs but my fan dosent I had a 3 wire black brown and red I have both my browns on my new century motor hooked to the compositor and the black wire hooked to L2 and my yellow wire is capped and I don't have a clue what im missing here unless my compositor is not a duel
Did you use a separate run cap or did you get a new dual run cap
When I saw reversing wires sticking out the top on a unit or in a video I always thought the tech was just looking to get the wires out of the way of the fan. Now I wonder if the motivation is more that the guy is unsure whether he needs to swap the connections, and he wants to be able to reverse the rotation after a test run if necessary???? Go figure....
Again , how long do you think those zip ties are going to last ? You will have to change them every year .
Yup, and there are such things as SS zip ties.
I always change the whole dual.... I dont even bother to mention that I could just change the fan cap. I just tell em the cap is dead.... which the fan side normally is... and if they press I just tell em if one side fails the other aint far behind... and thats the truth.
Changing the whole thing to me is the only way to go!!!!
Oliver looks like he hasn't missed a meal like my dog, my dog looks like a badly packaged summer sausage, was there a boogieman/cat in the dog house.
LOL LOL LOL, he was a little fatter, but he's been on a diet. Yeah there was a cat in there. at the end of the video he sticks his head out the other door
Wichitafalls right in the river
Very cool I was born and raised in Killeen
Instead of cutting the brown wire with the white tracer, why couldn't you just put the tracer wire on the existing capacitor, making sure it phases out with the existing wire coming from the contactor, Just wondering
You could do that, it wouldn't hurt it at all
I installed one and the fan vibrates like crazy! and idea why?
This is for hvac techs call a contractor
@@stevekaufmann8109 Real helpful!
I have a new cap its an amrad50+5.0 ultramet
Put the black on the top of the contactor where the other back wire is, put you solid brown wire on the fan side of the cap, put you yellow wire on the common side of the cap then wire nut your brown with with strip wire
Its a shame the motor manufacturers don't take the reversing wires out the same hole as the power wires and make them long enough to reach the electrical cabinet.
very true heavydiesel of course you could simply extend them with some butt connectors, no?
I always wondered why they didn't do that John, But since they don't we have to make due with what we have.
Yeah, got to work with what you've got!
We don't have those style of motors here as we don't have your style of air con systems either (or the weather to need them) Most heating is hydronic with radiators. This is plumbers work so as a air con or refrigeration guy we wouldn't touch them.
I have in the past swapped the ends of a motor over to get it to run the other way! Little shaded pole motors.
Okay now the main thing is what did Oliver get out of there
There was a cat in there. Before I started doing the video he got swatted a couple of times.
lol
do it right ,,neat and clean is the only way ,i have never seen the wire hanging out the top of condensing unit, seems like a safety hazard .and the vibration could wear through wire insulation ,all i can do is shake my head .
I see it all the time Steven.
Which is my comon side of my cap im sorry im not an ac guy im just a broke do it all thats burning up in texas
It's the side with 4 terminals,
That Packard run cap won't even last one year , total junk .
