    I have autism and I surf. Many times people mistake me for being an asshole. I am just quiet and don't process social cues like regular people. I surf alone and many people don't know me even though I've lived here and surfed my break for 8 years. I try to tell people I'm autistic but they think I'm joking. I've been physically threatened in Hawaii as well because I don't socialize like normal people. I wish everyone was just a little more understanding instead of jumping to conclusions. Not everyone is wired the same way. Some of us have to really try extremely hard to train our brains to pick up subtle social cues.

    As long as you know how to surf and understand that the deepest guy gets the wave, I don't care where you're from. Plenty of locals are bad surfers and have bad attitudes. You don't own the waves just because you live nearby. It's a shame because it's only getting worse with more crowds and people's entitlement today.

    I surfed Raglan about 2 months before this video was made. The big brother from the video was there telling people to fuck off and snaking everyone. It’s true, no one does shit when you are 150kg. Back in the mid 70's til 82 , when moved to L A to live with my dad . Was a well known surfer and considered a local over all breaks in town . The 3 best consistent breaks some friends and I ruled , was a skinny 16 kid but some were older and strong. Sure had outsiders dropping my wave many times , would push them down . Paddling back had to explain the right and wrong and point the guys to never even think . Now still today there is this break just for the locals , it doesn't matter who you are , they will beat you out . Stupidity has a price , if one go surf on any other break and is recognized , better run . Was already living in L A and surfing at Malibu for the second time in my life , surfing the leftovers on the 2 nd break . There i was a good surfer in the middle of a crowd catching some 3 ft lousy waves . The locals at the outside surfing some 6 ft nice and long rights , fair enough . When i saw what made a skinny teen become a man , a nice and bigger wave shaping up coming . Paddle right and not a single guy near , thought finally a good one all my . Just had to turn and drop in , bottom turn a slap on the face when i saw a guy trying to get in , so i blocked him and went on . Paddle back sat on my board and the guy that tried surf my wave , said nice wave . Asked him how long he was surfing , couple of years was his answer . Told him never do or try doing again , and explain why . he had no idea . After few minutes I hear someone shouting , hey you get out . Look around to see who was screaming , yeah dude you with this strange wetsuit and brand board . Look at him , was a big man older and stronger , about 50 ponds and 4 or 5 inches taller . Came next to me and shout inches away from my ear, get the f...k out now , Why man , what have I done ,,where the f....k you come from . Brazil , but am also an American by father and will not leave , want surf some more . He throw a punch at me and missed , jump in the water thinking a punch in the water is just his arm. The guy sat on his board and used the elbow and broke my board , seeing the damage instinctively spiked the fins on his board . Turn and start paddling out , sure he came after me . Had never fight in my life , and my first will be against this big dude , well done man , Sure had some friends with me but i knew the fight was on , back in Brazil i was about to get a brown belt on J J . The guy was furious came after me with his mouth foaming , and I scared to death when start to remember what i was taught . When was all over nobody got hurt , but made the guy take a nap , and end him begging me to let him go . Today he knows what went on , now i bet for at least 13 years he kept thinking how a skinny got the best out of him . Anyway that was my first and last problem I had . One more thing , was in Australia and went to surf at Snapper . Got to the beach seeing the crowd , got few beers and enjoy the beach . When l saw Parko coming , got in to surf . Never in my life saw a person being the major a...hole in the water , He dropped in over everybody wave . man if a local has the right to do what i saw . I swear if one day we get across on a neutral break like any over Bali , will chase him and drop on his first wave just for kicks

    Just a bit stink how you almost ran the bloke over at 0:30 who was actually doing the right thing and paddling out toward the whitewater rather than the shoulder. You may be a local and surf good but that was pretty lame

    • @RaglanSurfReport
      @RaglanSurfReport  3 года назад +10

      I’m not sure what your interpretation of ‘almost’ is, but it seems pretty flexible. I was nowhere near the guy, but it’s nice that you care 👍🏻

    • @PwnTheCodFish
      @PwnTheCodFish 3 года назад +2

      that guy wasn't even paddling he was just sitting like a duck right in his line, a respectful surfer will do their best to estimate the line that is most likely for the person surfing the wave to take so that you wont mess him up or get run over, then gets the hell out of there as quickly as possible, you can actually see that he stops paddling to duck dive the green, instead of paddling more to the white wash to get out of his line

    • @PwnTheCodFish
      @PwnTheCodFish 3 года назад +2

      on another note the guy duck diving probably knows exactly where lukes line was gonna go, therefore he knows he's not gonna get run over or mess up his line and left it till the last second, just because a good surfer gets close to someone paddling doesnt always mean he's trying to scare them or assert dominance, think about it like thats where luke HAS to put his surfboard to continue on the line that he wants to take, good surfers know where they have to go exactly to do what they need to do and if you get scared or think you're too close to someone for comfort, thats due to lack of knowledge and is almost entirely your fault, that applies to paddling back out and surfing the wave. an experienced surfer wouldn't even think twice about something like that
