ABOUT TODAYS VIDEO: Fish Oil For Dogs vs Coconut Oil
Which one is better for your dog, coconut oil or fish oil? Both oils have excellent nutritional properties for dogs, so let's have a look at both.
When you add coconut oil to your dogs food, its acids (capric, caprylic and lauric), break down the cell wall of yeast fungus, causing it die.
The best form of coconut oil is called MCT oil, and made from coconut oil. It has all the benefits without the main downside of coconut oil which is it's high saturated fat content, which has been researched recently to be inflammatory. MCT oil bypasses this problem.
So it's better to use MCT oil combined with an Omega 3 supplement such as hemp oil to increase the cognitive abilities of older dogs and help slow the aging process plus boost your dogs brain function to be sharper, more aware with greater perception, reasoning and judgment.
So start by giving a 1/8th tsp of MCT oil to small dogs, 1/4stp to medium dogs and 1/2tsp to large dogs. And for hemp oil, give 1/4tsp to small dogs, 3/4tsp to medium dogs and 2tsp to large dogs daily. Remember to start oils small and slow and build up over a week to avoid diarrhea. Anything new in the diet must always start small and slow.
Coconut water is also a great way to get some electrolytes and rehydration into your dog, especially through the summer months for kibble fed dogs that have little option beyond tap water. They need more moisture in their bodies due the dehydrating effects of dry food and that they don't take on enough rehydration to compensate causing stress on the liver, kidneys and other internal organs. Dogs love coconut water, it's healthy for them and they'll drink lots of it, feeling much better in the process.
EPA and DHA in fish oil improve brain activity and help enhance eye health. DHA forms part of the tissue in the brain and retina of the eyes. It helps to form neurotransmitters, important to brain function.
Omega-3 fatty acids help improve arthritis symptoms for greater mobility and reduced inflammation.
Both oils have similarities and differences and both have good nutritional benefits for your dog. However, because fish oil is so volatile from long storage times, exposure to oxygen in the air, heat degrades it and potential mercury contamination, and even light alters it's characteristics, it's highly recommended to use a stable oil like hemp or flax oil that carry all the advantages but none of the disadvantages.
Alternating MCT oil with a stable hemp oil can provide your dog with the advantages of both oils while ensuring your dog gets variety and extra nutritional support.

Really appreciate your detailed & thorough discussion on oils for dogs. You always hear, check with your vet first, never found one yet who seemed knowledgeable or seeming to care in the slightest about nutrition. My older girl is genetically predisposed to seizures and had a couple which was terrifying for me. She quickly got over them. Anyway I was recommended to try MCT oil to avoid the seizures so she has been getting this for several years. I was glad to hear about hemp oil for cognition bc she is now 8. So will be trying this as well. Thank you for your suggestion.
MCT is a good idea. Fresh food in the diet is essential. And zero vaccines in older dogs especially. For seizure dogs specifically I recommend a raw food diet and a good CBD oil as has proven anecdotally to work with my clients.

I took your advice months back and started giving my pup Hempseed oil! But I do give her a tumeric supplement from Zesty Paws and they add coconut oil to it. Hope that's not a problem!

I use coconut oil and baking soda mix to brush my greyhound’s teeth. Can MCT oil be used instead with same benefits?
It can but coconut oil is fine for teeth cleaning. MCT is more like brain fuel but go small and slow when starting it, 1/4tsp med/large dogs or you'll get diarrhea. I know when trying it myself to start small and build up or you get loose stools.
Mussel oil is better than either.

Hello I started making my own dog food, I use nupro. Do I need to add mct oil, hemp seed oil, probiotic, flaxseed, and eggs with shell. I just want to get it right and you know what your talking about. Sorry for the long paragraph 😅

Here's some help with kibbles:

It's good but not so stable as is fish oil. Cod are largely farmed today so the oil is compromised nutritionally in my opinion so I prefer something like hemp seed oil which is clean, balanced omegas and has vit E in it too: amzn.to/3vDdtjX
How about Virgin coconut oil?
It's just the lauric acid in coconut is now being questioned for it's health value. So until a definitive result, I use coconut oil topically and Safe Sea (Ahi flower oil with Green Lipped Mussel Oil): amzn.to/3Yx9Z10 internally for omega 3 needs. Great for joint health too.

The recommended amounts are what you build to (ending amounts), so start at a 1/4 dose and work up over 4 days.
Yes, can be given same day. Go easy on the MCT, start very small and build up over a week. I made that mistake on myself with the MCT and got loose stools but amazing feeling using MCT, great brain food.

Hey hi. Am from India. My beagle is 19 months old and he keeps shedding all year. His urine is often yellowish. Does body heat has anything to do with hair fall? What kind of food will be helpful at this situation?. Waiting for ur inputs.
Nutrition is the key here. Feed as much fresh foods as you can, not just dry foods. So take out 30% dry food and replace with raw eggs, part cooked and well crushed/mashed vegatables, a little plain lassi (no added sugar) and canned sardines. Also stay away from vaccinations and vet drugs generally, including those dewormers/flea&tick poisons.

I will now starting adding the coconut oil and cod liver oil to their food. Also, I now make my own black walnut tinctures, can I give that to them? I know you recommended a black walnut/worm wart tincture in another video and I was giving them that for the first year and I haven’t had any issues with parasites. I have replaced it with DE in 2022. But I want to try something alternatively to keep the bugs guessing. Will my black walnut tincture be ok for them? Thanks

I wonder if I may tax you with a question or three,I apologize for lengthiness,and appreciate any time you can spare to consider.
My darling boy is nearly 9, 50 kg (110 pounds?) He's had a blissful life with me from day 1,never stepped foot in a vets office til this year, certainly never vaxxed and a handful of flea treatments if that. He had awful surgery early this year for a snapped canine tooth which seemed wise,and xrays showed elbow displaysia, to my abject horror.
I can't help but feel all those hideous meds knocked him for six. A few weeks ago he was peeing blood,horrible infection,antibiotics as much as I hate them..long story short he had ultrasounds which showed cysts on his(apparently enlarged) prostate, was neutered .he is slowly recovering, and the vet insisted that he has abdominal surgery in six weeks if the cysts aren't gone.
I am determined to prevent my boy having more godamm surgery,and determined to prove the vet wrong. Are there any things you can think of, to help?
His diet is raw meat daily(chicken,beef,lamb,livers,kidney) along with bone broth.i always have a slow cooker going with bones, red lentils herbs and whatever veg.

Here's some information on cysts:
The only way to treat prostatic cysts in dogs is to surgically drain and/or remove the cysts. Any surgery poses a risk. However, the cysts cannot be left due to the possibility of bursting and creating infection as well as the general discomfort and disruption they cause to your dog’s voiding ability. Depending on how large the cysts are and where they are positioned, the veterinarian may be able to drain them with a hollow needle via ultrasonic imaging. If that is the case, smaller incisions will be made to remove the drained cysts. Another technique for more difficult to maneuver positioning of the cysts is opening the abdomen entirely and removing the cysts whole without prior draining.
So it's up to you re surgery. Are the cysts tiny and currently not affecting peeing for example.
A prostatic cyst can enlarge the prostate and impede the flow of urine. Avoid standard anibiotics and uae garlic, olive leaf or oregano oil: amzn.to/3ulnF1T
For the diet add lots of veggies for fiber. They include broccoli, raspberries, bell peppers, kale, red cabbage and green leafy vegetables. I was just wondering if you could possibly suggest any natural homepathy remedy for dogs with thick brown/ red discharge in eyes?
Also my dog has some aprt of tumour/ growth on one of its eyelids apparently according to the vets it is not cancer but it keeps growing and then popping; and when it pops (usually by itself naturally) a lot of blood keeps flowing out and then a few days later the growth happens again but slightly everytime it gets larger. Apparently according to the vets only way to remove it is through surgery which costs way too much money at least a few thousand pounds (GBP) and they mentioned even by doing so it may still not get rid of the matter completely. Unfortunately as I know it would be very difficult as the vets said to do surgery on the eye our dog would need to be under anaesthetic (put to sleep) and unfortunately as our dog is between 14-15 years of age it maybe very risky let alone the price for the eye surgery here in UK. It would therefore be very useful for any help/ suggestions.

First, that's incomplete information. It vilifies fish oil, and fails to mention that there are fish oils that do not contain mercury. Do your research. Nordic Naturals for example, specifically tests to ensure that their fish oil does not contain mercury. But you didn't say anything about marine algae oil. Marine algae oil is usually produced in facilities that control the entire process in pristine conditions so there is no risk of mercury at all, but still provides both EPA and DHA, like fish oil.
And it's not a matter of which oil works best for dogs. Dogs, like people, need different types of fats for different biological purposes. They don't do as well when limited to just one type of fat. You CAN give your dog both coconut oil AND fish oil, and should, as dogs need different types of fats for different biological processes. But they also need other types of fats, including Omega 6 fats. Sunflower oil, safflower oil, or other type of seed oils are also needed by dogs, not just Omega 3 fats.
Other forms of Omega 3 oils, like flaxseed oil, or olive oil, may not be converted into EPA and DHA very well, as some dogs, like some people, don't process plant sources of fats into EPA and DHA very well. EPA and DHA are essential for brain function, eye health, cardiovascular health, and a bunch of other things. So, it's important for dogs to get EPA and DHA, not just Omega 3 fats. Which means that some dogs don't do well with flaxseed oil. You can also include fatty fish like salmon or sardines in your dog's diet to provide fats that contain EPA and DHA. Just don't skip the fats if your dog is trying to lose weight. Skip the carbs, instead.
Dogs need a higher fat amount than people do, as dogs primarily burn fats for fuel, and too many carbohydrates are inflammatory for them, so my dogs do better with low carb but moderate fat. The best fats to feed dogs are uncooked fats. Cooking causes fats to change to a form that is more likely to cause pancreatitis. So always choose uncooked fats over cooked fats when possible. Use virgin, cold-pressed oils, not heat-extracted oils. And never give your dogs fried foods like bacon. Not only is it high in salt, but cooking damages the fats and increased the risks of your dog getting pancreatitis. This is one reason why fish oil supplements are a better option than canned fatty fish as canned fish are canned in high heat which can damage the fat. If you are making your own dog food and are making gently cooked dog food, add the oil just before serving, not before or during cooking.
Using fish oil depletes the oceans, goes rancid fast and there's better options like ahi flower oil and potentially algae oil as you mentioned, plus others.
It's generally omega 3's missing from most diets. Seed oils are mixed in effectiveness. Polly sunflower type oils are bad medicine, never use!
Coconut oil is now off the list with recent studies due to the lauric acid effect. Extracted MCT oil is best.
Dogs need 12% fats in their diet.
