  • Star Trek Retrospective, Part 18: Star Trek (2009) was a triumphant success for the Star Trek franchise, but its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, wasn't the Dark Knight level hit Paramount may have hoped for. The third film in the Kelvin Timeline series, Star Trek Beyond, would prove even more of a mixed bag.

    Over a year ago I was in a rutt. I had transferred to a new college, it was still online because of Covid restrictions, and the assignments were long and monotonous that it felt like I wasn't evolving in my knowledge of art and crafting new ideas. During this time, there was a day where I had 4 hours of nothing to do but homework and it was dead silent. So I searched up Oliver Harper Review Retrospective on RUclips, as his videos had helped me kill time in High School by learning cool facts about films I love. But then I found your first reviews on Star Trek, you were only up to Part 5 and I marathoned what you had in two days. I would watch every new uploads on the series , and even some of your other stuff. I learned about how Star Trek impacted culture outside of an American lens and how Star Trek is more than just fighting aliens and slow pacing. And with this final video, of you speaking on the first Star Trek film I saw in theaters as a teen, it felt like I had gone full circle. Between late 2020-2022, I went through so many changes, and your videos evolved in a way I loved, that I feel like I am not the same person when I first saw your videos. My college life has been more enjoyable and many personal stuff in my life have improved. I can't say you were the key helper of my life, but you were one of the many building blocks. *So thank you Rowan J Coleman, God bless, God Speed, Live Long, and Prosper*

    Two things about this movie. One, I hosted the premiere/preview here in Houston a week before it's release. It's my little piece of being a part of Star Trek history. It was a huge honor. Secondly, I have the misfortune of being the one who inadvertently told Walter Koenig about Anton Yelchin's passing. He was here in Houston for a comic convention and while me and my wife were at his panel earlier that day we read that Anton had passed away. Later that evening before he left the convention I was one of the last few guests who got to meet him. I had assumed that at this point he had definitely found out about it but when I told him how sorry I was and gave him my condolences on the news about Anton he asked me what news. And without thinking I just blurted out about him passing away earlier today. His handler for the event look at me like you stupid mother fucker. Apparently they didn't want to tell him while he was there and had asked other people not to mention anything because they wanted him to enjoy his time. But by the time I got to his line there was no one there so no one stopped me and told me. To this day it kills me when I remember the look on his face. He immediately realized what had happened and saw how upset I was at what I had done and as a sure sign of how awesome he is He hugged me and told me that it was okay. We talked for another 20 minutes before they finally made us stop.

    Fun fact - for years Leonard Nimoy's voice narrated over the opening sequence in the Mugar Omni Theater at the Boston Museum of Science. It's one of my fond childhood memories and it makes me sad they no longer use that opening sequence. But the fact that he was a Massachusetts native (as did I) is one of those little coincidences that I love.

Don’t get me wrong the new shows aren’t perfect and I particularly dislike what we saw on the planet „Vergessen“, but other than that, Star Trek is in pretty good hands right now and I have enjoyed most of what hast come out these past five years more and more.

    Took a friend to see this who had not watched TOS when it first aired because it had been took too scary at the time (it had been scary for me too, but didn't stop the pre-schooler I was from coming back for more), and she really enjoyed it. One that non-Trekkies should watch.

  • @patrickdhamilton
    @patrickdhamilton 2 года назад +11

    Out of the Kelvin timeline films, Beyond seems the most ‘Trekkie’ of the films. In spite of there being another doomsday weapon mcguffin, that deconstruction of what the Federation means just struck me as the kind of story that Star Trek is supposed to tell.
    Thank you for these detailed and thoughtful retrospectives. I hope it won’t be long before we can get more Star Trek analysis.

    Nicholas Meyer reiterated in his director's commentary for Star Trek 6, "Art thrives on restrictions." He shrouded sets in shadow and used creative lighting to hide that he had no budget to dress them. Jump to Star Trek Beyond: "It's 50 years of Trek, so we made 50 different new aliens." Did this improve the film? No wonder hollywood rarely turns a profit.

    • @BronzeAgeBryon
      @BronzeAgeBryon 2 года назад +4

      Well said. TMP made similar mistakes. The robe of the Betelgeusian glimpsed from a far when Kirk lands at Starfleet Command was said to cost 1 Million dollars. And the alien designs we see for the background characters at Yorktown in Beyond most likely added unnecessary cost to the budget.

    • @adamb503
      @adamb503 2 года назад +4

      @@BronzeAgeBryon I have to agree. That many different aliens would have looked natural in a space port in Tattooine. Trek isn't Star Wars though. As for why the third movie underperformed, new trek has resulted in a divided fan base. That some "diehard" fans are staying home shouldn't come as a surprise.

    • @Clone42
      @Clone42 2 года назад +2

      @@adamb503 The new properties don't resemble Star Trek, to me. They're dressed up like Star Trek, but they're not of the same genre. Star Trek explored a similar space to Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. It was about deep ideas and sometimes twisting your mind into a temporal pretzel. The script writers clearly read a lot of science fiction. The core identity of the show was remarkably consistent over five different series (not all great) but it stopped being about ideas almost entirely. Now it's about feelings, sitting around kvetching about romantic uneasiness, and round-house kicking stunt actors over railings then shouting, "Booya! Science shit yeah!" Nothing like sitting down for some cerebral Star Trek and getting a two for one instead: "Honey. I want to talk about our relationship..." Immediately followed by a kick to the balls. "BOOYA!"

    Gotta say it is bittersweet to get to the final part of this retrospective.
    It has been a joy to watch such a well written, researched and edited show. I am pleased to hear that you are going to keep doing these for other franchises, I look forward to seeing them. Especially Babylon 5 which may well be my favourite science fiction series alongside Trek.
    From one Scotsmen to another I bid you, Peace and long life. Live long and prosper 🖖

    I’m so glad to hear you’ve got a long-term plan for retrospectives, that kind of stability can really help so you’re not searching for what to do next. Branching-out with the format is a great idea too, though of course I can see you’re not branching out TOO far to start. While I know this isn’t always compatible with playing the algorithm numbers, going beyond sci-fi for other stories you’re familiar with which have similar political depth, themes, and twisty production histories would certainly be welcome too! But given the length of your list that’s not an immediate concern :)
    Anyway, as to the rest of the retrospective, I’m kind of glad that first writing team left. What we got was better.
    Yorktown really is beautiful as a symbol of Federation prosperity, I always love the skyscraper apartments along the huge canal which itself provides a window into one of the dock’s corridors! Plus it’s also a symbol of the Federation’s egalitarianism - the ENTIRE station is built like that, in something of an ironic twist to the shooting location given how starkly different living conditions get just a few miles out from the towers in Dubai. Compared to stations in The Expanse, where they definitely have small regions that look just as pretty and cosmopolitan; they also have extremely utilitarian docks and barely-habitable slums. The Federation doesn’t build like that. The space traffic controllers get the same luxury skyscraper apartments, with a great view of space and the rest of that station, as Admiral Avasarala.
    TBH I often felt Krall’s prosthetics and fictional language got in the way of Elba’s acting chops… his Captain’s Log scenes and his scenes on the Yorktown are always the most effective for me, so I wish he’d been given more like that. But nevertheless you can tell he acted very hard with what he was given.
    The sets throwing everyone around with the inertial dampers going offline was one of my favourite sequences of the entire film, and I had wondered how they’d done it - obviously considered that they gimballed the sets but had also wondered if it was CGI for cost-cutting. But some of the movements just looked too subtly realistically awkward, like they’d be made more photogenic if they were CGI, like the characters “walking in place” on the corners of sets before continuing what they were doing on the floor/wall/ceiling. So I had suspected it was practical - thanks for the confirmation!
    I’ve come to like the Franklin a lot more too, than on my first viewing. At first I kept being distracted by how different it looked from the NX-class, but comparing against the two support classes we saw in Enterprise (the Intrepid-type and that other one with a semicircular rather than pointy hull), and the NX-Alpha test ship, then the Franklin clearly fits right in between those two designs. And it totally makes sense to have other smaller ships too, considering they said it took something like 10 or 15 years to build the NX-01 - not to mention already implied by the existence of those other ships despite the NX-01 keel being laid down as soon as NX-Delta hit warp 3.
    Can’t say I necessarily feel some of the themes that Pegg talked about, but I do really enjoy all the character work. And the way it’s shot IMO adds a lot more realism to the set design than JJ’s “grittiness”. Like the whisky drinking scene, getting to see the lights and reflections through the window for so long while they chatted about Kirk’s life, as if having warped space just beyond those windows was nothing special, made it feel a lot more concrete to me than JJ’s “wow look!!” style of directing my attention.

    I know that this isn’t a “classic style” Trek movie. Much more action oriented. But I must admit I love this movie. It’s a lot of fun and exciting. I really love that the rock song from the first film reappears. “Classical” music.

      It's actually the most like the original series out of the three. They're out in space and the story isn't Earth centric, they nailed the Spock/McCoy relationship, and it was the first time I accepted Pegg as Scotty.

    • @CoreIreland
      @CoreIreland 2 года назад +2

      Actually the "rock song" and it's promotion is part of what killed the movie and the movie franchise. It may have been fun but selling it to the audience was a mess.

    • @JcBravo8

      @@CoreIreland Most people I know liked the rock scene in the movie. But it was that first trailer with the rock song that killed a lot of enthusiasm to see it. I wrote Beyond off after seeing the 1st trailer.

    Thank you so much for the entire suite of videos, your excellent work has kept me highly entertained and educated me no end too. Just a thought if you wish to produce any further Star Trek content: the numerous high quality fan-made productions that have appeared in ever larger numbers in recent years could be a very worthwhile project to both critique and provide some in-depth historical overview and narrative, just a thought 😊

    I saw a drawing of Anton Yelchin after he passed depicting him meeting Leonard Nimoy and Defrost Kelly ( I think it was Kelly) in the after life and Nimoy was holding his hand in the Vulcan greeting saying "We didn't expect you so soon but now your here you'll want to meet Gene, come with us" its always stuck with me, beautifully drawn and very poignant
