    Love Geoff's voice and arrangements; and so glad you did this one! If you haven't yet, you really need to hear his God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. I was bored to tears with the song and hoped to never hear it again - then Geoff released his version last year. It's GORGEOUS. Probably my favorite of all of his performances. You commented on how hard he's worked on his lower range: he also spent years trying to keep his voice higher as it changed - When he was young he wanted to be a rock tenor - then when he got into theater and working for Disney, so much of it happens in tenor. So he was constantly pushing, not just to hit the notes, but to make them sound beautiful. He's always worked hard.)

    Geoff filmed this in his living room in the middle of the night with his wife. His son was in bed sleeping. Every now and then William would wake up a yell "Daddy. Is that blackbird?" Geoff "Yes. Now go back to sleep or the toilet monster will get you". 😂
    Geoff can get down to a B0. He just released his Christmas video a week ago...
    I'm Dreaming of A White Christmas.
    It is absolutely beautiful.

    What I really love about Geoff is that he keeps working on his voice. Listen to this up against something more recent-he sounded amazing then, but even better now. For one thing, there was some nasality here that some people noticed-but one reactor (also a bass singer) said he believed it might be a mechanism he used to achieve that lovely smooth tone. Now you almost never hear it and it’s deliberate when you do-and he still has that rich, smooth timbre.
    And yeah, he does scoop into notes sometimes, but again, it’s very intentional these days.
    Wow, that falsetto is sweet! And that low note at the end was a super thick E1 sub. He has gone lower since.
    Great reaction, Bob!! (Still want you to check out The Bass Gang sometime soon. Four basses in their teens and twenties, just getting started, but despite limited resources, they’re fantastic.)

    Nice to see you looking back at some of Geoff's work. And amazing arrangement and one of his early multi-Geoff videos. He has gone lower since but this one does show a lot of his range. If you haven't yet seen his latest: White Christmas, do yourself a favour. And to really hear him in the depths I suggest Over the Misty Mountain Cold. :)

    Geoff's voice is incredible but as good as he is, his arrangements are even better. What an amazing musician. VoicePlay brought EJ Cardona on to do "I Can't Make You Love Me" so I looked up Voctave. Consider reacting to "Mary Did You Know?" (I've heard both PTX and HF and both are beautiful) with Mark Lowry (the guy that wrote the song, Barry Greene composed the music) doing the lead singing. It is stunningly beautiful, angelic, and powerful. Listen for the long held notes toward the end.

    Geoff is a phenomenon and my favorite singer. He is gifted as he arranges, produces, and edits each piece, vocal and video. He has only been doing solo work since the pandemic while still working with Voiceplay. He does about half of their arrangements with Layne Stein, the beatboxer, doing most of the others.
    His cover of High and Dry (Radiohead) is the only one he's done with no duplicate Geoff's or other singers. He did Mele Kalikimaka two yerars ago with the American Sirens, a 40's - 50's style trio.
    His Christmas piece he did last year, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, is my very favorite. He did do a great rendition of White Christmas this year, I think you'll like them both!

      Let's not forget the B0 on their cover of the Halo theme or his A0 on "Enemy". His overall range is probably even larger than that, in reality. But, like he says, his day-to-day range he can hit without effort and is guaranteed (subharmonics aren't always a guarantee) is A1-A5. That's still insanely impressive.

    • @upsidedownpyramid7617

      @@johndeeregreen4592 I have noticed that with subs, I can push chest to A1 and chest fry to about E1 on the daily, but my subharmonic B0 and vocal fry F0 are a bit of a coin toss. I would say day to day is A1-D5 for me, F0-G5 on a good range day

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 Год назад

      @@upsidedownpyramid7617, yeah, extended techniques can be such a coin toss, for sure. On any given day, I am guaranteed E1 in chest, C#1 in chest-fry, to about the same D5. On a great day, that can be extended to B negative 2 in pure fry, Eb0 subharmonic, to E7 with whistle notes. Now, I may have one day a month where I can do all these techniques at the same time. So, for the sake of being realistic, I put my range at C#1-D5.

    • @upsidedownpyramid7617
      @upsidedownpyramid7617 Год назад

      @@johndeeregreen4592 I think it was yesterday my subharmonics began working great, I was practicing and hitting the technique right after realizing that they actually don’t use any false cord or vocal fry, when you approach them knowing how they work it makes it much easier. I would also end up doing chest fry or throat bass when I wanted a sub. I think that the issue is how they are normally taught or described. I constantly hear people use vocal fry or false cord resonation to describe them because singing that way is such a new and obscure technique for the most part. There isn’t enough scholarly research done into them, I once wrote a paper around subharmonics and finding scholarly sources was near impossible. To actually do them you sort of have to place your chest note forward and a bit nasal in order to slip into the multiphonic sound, as if you were throat singing, then you relax the note partially to resonate two different frequencies. The description always made me think I was mixing a relaxed fry into my note, but all that does is screw up the note, even in a chest fry or throat bass you are blending either vocal or false cord fry into your chest to push the voice lower. Standard subharmonics seem to be about really playing with each note. An A1 to a C2 subharmonic for me is usually much harder than an D1 or F1 subharmonic

  • @534DaHill

    On his extreme lows (like that last E1) he uses a special technique called subharmonics that makes him effectively octave down his 'true' note. He actually sings an E2 but it sounds like an E1 yet a little more 'rumbly' due to vocal fry involved. Geoff is a master of this technique. By using this he got to a B0 in the Voiceplay Halo Theme intro. His personal record for an actual pitched note to sing, so far. As far as I know at least. His slide at the end of Enemy went lower, but that was not intentionally pitched, so he doesn't count that.
    You should definately listen to his recent version of White Christmas.

    With a lot of these internet bass singers, where Geoff is different, he is actually a bass. So many of these RUclips singers couldn't sing an E2 in a choir setting if their life depended on it. Most of them are low baritones, who are able to reach bass notes on-mic with some compression and gain. Geoff being a true bass, when he gets on a microphone, it truly is effortless. I mean, I know some of his low notes below A1 couldn't be sang without a mic either, but they sound like they're being sung by a bass... at least he has the right timbre.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 Год назад +2

      @@nerdywordyprincess8499, he's not a baritone. Just his speaking voice alone says that's not true. His average vocal (speaking) frequency is around 88Hz, which is 37Hz lower than even a low baritone. That means, just him speaking is lower than many basses (a typical bass voice only averages 100-105Hz for their speaking voice). He may not have realized his true voice, but he is on no planet a baritone.
