Wow...I just noticed your bleeding set up. I do the same thing with big 8" Harbor Freight carabiners through the gills. Seems to work great. Thanks

Oh yeah...good idea! I couldn't find one that big so I dusted the point down on the grinder...sharpened it. It pops right thru the skin between below the jaw.

It’s worth investing in Torpedo divers if you have some extra money.
They are very low drag and you can add multiples of them on your line if necessary to get extremely deep .
They also have depth charts for all their weights.
We used to run 1# and 1.5 # as drop weights a long time ago.
Nice job on the fish !

Gotcha. I remember running the drops on wire poles and pumping them for lakers...long time ago!
Actually working on a low-drag 1lb 'ball' It looks somewhat like a torpedo diver...streamlined, balanced with fin. It reachs 55ft deep with 100ft of line out. 1lb takes 150ft to reach that same depth.

Its crazy how different the great lakes gear is compared to the gear we use in the PNW, considering we are targeting the same species. We do happen to run 12-16oz cannonballs with 360 flasher though, albeit in relatively shallower water. Sea lions are definitely a thing here and our fish seem to love shaking hooks so I'm sure there are some factors that contribute to defferent techniques.

Ha...No sealions here! Seems like the cohos throw the most hooks...they thrash and roll more than kings. I've been rigging with double split rings to try to reduce the cam effect...the spoon catching and then prying the hook free.

If you hook the weight through the swivel eye that's closest to the reel, the swivel will still swivel. If you hook the weight through the swivel eye closest to the lure, the swivel can't swivel. I do this with dipsey divers. Thanks

Do you have much water resistance drag on 1 lb ball ? If you go 100 ft down how deep is your lure? I have a few but haven’t tried yet

Yes they drag back...and are highly speed dependent. 100ft of 25lb braid gets about 40fow at 3mph. It will reach 60fow if going 2-2.5mph. I believe the rise and fall (with speed changes and turns) is what really makes lb balls effective ...it triggers strikes.

I've never used a down rigger or lead core to catch salmon. Have caught all N American salmon species. Keep it simple. People make it complicated
