This might be my last half life related video for a while, I'll still be doing some hammer tutorials but i want to move my channel over to a more video essay style of channel. I'm getting burnt out from the amount of half life related stuff and i just wanna switch stuff up for a while. @Peanut Arbuckle not really, even if they are not regular citizens like the metrocops (bc they are a lot more modified) they still conserve a LOT of themselves, they are not totally brainwashed. In hl2 the soldiers are totally wiped out of any humanity. That's why they make jokes, and that is why they are so weak and unorganized without a squad leader Hl2 soldiers do not waver if a elite or a shotgunner is dead, because they have much better training and they don't panic (except in hl2 ep 1 when the citadel was destroyed, they are seen running around trying to scape, they are fearless, not stupid haha)
pretty sure the grunts in HL:A are less modified than the HL2 soldiers, in my eyes i see the HL2 soldiers as special forces (because they’re after anticitizen one) and the HL:A grunts as normal soldiers, like the standard infantry unit that isn’t modified very much
The AI of combine soldiers is insane. How they can react to your decisions is crazy. Like when you take a house for cover that another combine soldier was using, he'll leave. If another guy (doesn't know you in the house) attempts to flank your previous cover and he sees you're not there, he'll go searching. Once he realises you're near the house, he will search for another soldier and try to catch you off guard with their angle.
I found something interesting with HL:A Combine also. If their the sole-survivor, they'll announce their acting solo on the radio and take unique approaches. Grunts will shoot aimlessly and fast, like their in a panic. They'll rush the player or sticking behind cover. Captains will take tactical methods, sticking to cover a lot and still taking patience. Like HL2 Combine. Suppressors will stick to a distance to cover ground and try to keep the player stuck behind cover from their Heavy weapon. Chargers will rush the player and attempt to trap them, since their a close-range enemy.
Suppressors are so annoying if you don't take them down ASAP. Got pretty trapped in Chapter 6 by one in the construction yard who took some mean cover that overlooked the entire site. I had to stack boxes up in a corner and climb up on them to get an angle to shoot him (rather uncomfortably) with my pistol.
Overwatch is the name for ALL Combine garrison forces on Earth, including Civil Protection. The troopers everyone keeps calling Overwatch soldiers are specifically designated the "Overwatch Transhuman Arm" or OTA.

I think those ones are a different subset of combine soldiers dedicated entirely to act in the quarantine zone and to protect the vault. It would explain their drastic differences in appearance and class structure, as well as why the CPs look the exact same. Well, that's what I think, at least. It still doesn't explain why the grunts aren't brain washed, but who knows? Maybe the unpredictability helps...? Also, the other soldiers also have lines suggesting they try to bait Alyx out, too. Same words and phrases, as well. Just with the voice filter. 'These used?
Perhaps the grunts were tests to see if leaving some intelligence behind could help in combat/coordination, perhaps the combine just hadn't fully crack the way to fully brainwash humans yet. While the idea that they are specific to the quarantine zone is interesting the combine in Alyx really do seem more like prototypes more than anything. But I might be wrong who knows

I think the absence of other combine types in HL2 is because all unit types were combined into one with the combine soldier, due to their increased armor, coordination, and suppression behavior they have in half life 2.
it more a bit of headcanon than anything else, but i thought of a few explanations for why none of the half-life alyx combine soldier variants are seen in hl2, and why none of half-life 2's overwatch soldiers are seen in hla. more in universe explanations than explanations like the hla soldiers were all designed later, and/or its a Retcon to how the soldiers appear in hl2. the Grunts are simple soldiers that are super low ranking, as noted by their lower amount of augmentation, simpler armor, and still having notable amounts of human personality. by the time city 17 is fully up and running as the pseudo capital of the planet and dr breen's headquarters, there is no place for these lower rank soldiers there, so they are stationed in other less important cities, or have all been upgraded into overwatch soldiers. the Captain is essentially an overwatch soldier given a more specialized task. they are the leaders of these squads of soldiers that do stuff in the quarantined zone and related affairs(like protecting the vault in the quarantine zone). hence their version of the combine claw/clamp symbol having a vortigaunt head instead of the usual circle or human skull. them and their squads handle fighting xenians more than humans, but otherwise the captain is just an overwatch soldier in a different uniform maybe with some different augmentations, similar to what the nova prospekt guards are. once the quarantine zone is cleared out, they either go back to being soldiers and captains in the military, or are sent to other cities in need of clean up. the chargers and suppressors, with their heavy weapons and large amounts of armor plating, aren't sent after Gordon or resistance bases in half-life 2 because that isn't their role. id say, with them being in the quarantine zone working under the captains there, their job is to take out xenian threats from infested areas, not fight human resistance forces. the suppressors even call themselves an antibody protection force, and antibodies specifically fight off infections and diseases in the body. so saying these guys clear out areas infested with dangerous alien animals isn't a stretch, protecting the infestation control workers as they do their job. the suppressor and charger aren't heavily armored and armed with the big guns to fight HUMANS, no they fight packs of houndeyes or bullsquids, and get rid of the really dangerous creatures like the tentacles or gargantuas and whatever other xenian creatures may be living in those areas. yeah they can fight humans, but with the vaults location being in the quarantine zone, its less likely humans would be threatening it compared to say a cluster of tentacles growing a little too close or a stray gargantua. we don't see the familiar hl2 overwatch soldiers because it seems like soldiers main job is fighting humans and resistance groups, and just being the foot soldiers deployed more against rebel bases and when its an open street war. in half-life alyx, you're a single person in a closed off part of the city, they are sending the soldiers already stationed in the quarantine zone after you. you're not a whole rebel cell or a high priority like Gordon freeman (at least not yet). there also may be less soldiers as a whole stationed in and around the city, compared to in hl2 when breen lives in the city and the citadel is fully up and running. essentially, in the time between half-life: Alyx and Half-life 2 the forces stationed in and around city 17 has changed, due to the growing resistance and rebel movement, as well as the cities important as breen's base of operations. compared to when the main threats of the area were more xenian in nature compared to humans. thus the soldiers stationed in and around the city used to be more specialized to fight xenian threats, compared to years later when human rebels were more likely to be fought. as for other smaller things, the antlions seen in HLA could be a different subspecies or whatever compared to the massive nests in the wastelands outside, the nest in the QZ is smaller and the antlions are more acidic, also this species workers look VERY different compared to the workers seen in HL2:EP2's mines. and the weaponry, well we see an early version of the pulse rifle, and the pulse SMG easily could be an even earlier iteration, by the time of half-life 2 the standard issue pulse rifle is well... standardized. if a soldier uses a pulse weapon they use those, and if they aren't issued a pulse weapon, then they're just given mass produced human weapons such as the pistols, SMGs, or shotguns. the grunts in HLA probably only got pulse SMGs because they are smaller squads, likely fighting inherently dangerous aliens, and also are stationed to protect a high priority location, the Vault. as for the weapon gene coding stuff, i mean, id assume that's still around by HL2, i guess the rebels just have a way to get around it now, maybe just the pulse rifle is gene coded, compared to the pretty human pistol, SMG, and shotgun. the shotgun we see in HLA seems to be more modified and stuff as well, thats why its unique. TLDR: i think the combine soldiers are different in HLA compared to HL2 because in half-life 2 we see the soldiers that normally fight humans, while in half-life:Alyx we see the soldiers that normally fight the aliens from Xen. though in the grunts case those are just low ranking soldiers that likely got re-stationed to other cities or upgraded to overwatch soldiers once city 17 is essentially the planets capital with breen's HQ and thus is more important. other small differences can also be explained pretty easily; different species of antlions, pulse rifles becoming more standard issue changing what weapons are used by soldiers, and rebels eventually figured out a way to bypass the gene-coding. this stuff is all essentially some headcanon, but i think it makes sense.
Civil protection probably hasn't changed at all as you can already see them in the beginning of hla, pretty much the same as in hl2 Also i think that's it's probable that the combine captain is an "earlie version" of the standard combine soldier, and that grunt only wear explosive bottles because of the quarantine zone.
Most of the Combine in HL.Alyx are Proto-human Combine. They wears heavy suit with lower protection value, still acts somewhat like human and feels the level of pains that are closer to human. Hl2 Combine are the finish form of organic cyborg soldier, organic are just the muscles.

Actually, when spawned as part of a map instead of by the player using the console, they don't have a model at all, although they _do_ use the same pose that appears when spawned in using the console when looking at them in the hammer editor.
Can you compare HLA Combine Weaponry and HL2 AR2 Rifle? I would really like to see that, and noone has done the comparison before. Also, explain how it functions, it is pretty obvious but nonetheless fun.
I wonder what the story reason is for the grunts carrying those tanks. I'm used to NPCs with explosive weak points like that having flamethrowers or something similar, so it seems a bit odd that the grunts carry those for no discernable reason, seeing as they use normal guns. Maybe it was left over from the Cremators?
probably just an oxygen tank so they don't breathe in any of the Xen spore stuff. Its why grunts outside the QZ don't have tanks or filters on their gas masks.
I can see why the feature was removed since the stunstick in garry’s mod is basically just a slightly worse version of the crowbar. Comparing the two the stunstick actually swings slower then the crowbar does and has a very brief cool down time while the crowbar can be swung over and over in quick succession with no noticeable cool down.
they should be when HD update came in 2010 some of overwatch soldier carrying shotguns were switched to shotgunners shotgunners as part of the elite are squad leaders and traines specially to charge for close contact and blasting gordon

it swings slower but does 20 damage instead of 10 unlike the crowbar, which swings faster and of course does less damage

essentially, in the time between half-life: Alyx and Half-life 2 the forces stationed in and around city 17 has changed, due to the growing resistance and rebel movement, as well as the cities important as breen's base of operations. compared to when the main threats of the area were more xenian in nature compared to humans. thus the soldiers stationed in and around the city used to be more specialized to fight xenian threats, compared to years later when human rebels were more likely to be fought.
as for other smaller things, the antlions seen in HLA could be a different subspecies or whatever compared to the massive nests in the wastelands outside, the nest in the QZ is smaller and the antlions are more acidic, also this species workers look VERY different compared to the workers seen in HL2:EP2's mines. and the weaponry, well we see an early version of the pulse rifle, and the pulse SMG easily could be an even earlier iteration, by the time of half-life 2 the standard issue pulse rifle is well... standardized. if a soldier uses a pulse weapon they use those, and if they aren't issued a pulse weapon, then they're just given mass produced human weapons such as the pistols, SMGs, or shotguns. the grunts in HLA probably only got pulse SMGs because they are smaller squads, likely fighting inherently dangerous aliens, and also are stationed to protect a high priority location, the Vault.
as for the weapon gene coding stuff, i mean, id assume that's still around by HL2, i guess the rebels just have a way to get around it now, maybe just the pulse rifle is gene coded, compared to the pretty human pistol, SMG, and shotgun. the shotgun we see in HLA seems to be more modified and stuff as well, thats why its unique.
TLDR: i think the combine soldiers are different in HLA compared to HL2 because in half-life 2 we see the soldiers that normally fight humans, while in half-life:Alyx we see the soldiers that normally fight the aliens from Xen. though in the grunts case those are just low ranking soldiers that likely got re-stationed to other cities or upgraded to overwatch soldiers once city 17 is essentially the planets capital with breen's HQ and thus is more important.
other small differences can also be explained pretty easily; different species of antlions, pulse rifles becoming more standard issue changing what weapons are used by soldiers, and rebels eventually figured out a way to bypass the gene-coding.
this stuff is all essentially some headcanon, but i think it makes sense.

Also i think that's it's probable that the combine captain is an "earlie version" of the standard combine soldier, and that grunt only wear explosive bottles because of the quarantine zone.

Most of the Combine in HL.Alyx are Proto-human Combine.
They wears heavy suit with lower protection value, still acts somewhat like human and feels the level of pains that are closer to human. Hl2 Combine are the finish form of organic cyborg soldier, organic are just the muscles.

Actually, when spawned as part of a map instead of by the player using the console, they don't have a model at all, although they _do_ use the same pose that appears when spawned in using the console when looking at them in the hammer editor.

Actually the suppressors are called ANTIBODY PROTECTION FORCE or APF. ANTIBODY alone is technically inaccurate.
The NP guards may also be less modified, due to their humanly reactions in the radio chatter

how do elites usually fight in squads together? most of the encounters with them, at least in half-life 2 their with other classes.
I think the Grunts are just CP's or Soldiers in Hazmat, which is why they're wearing tanks and low armor.

I wonder what the story reason is for the grunts carrying those tanks. I'm used to NPCs with explosive weak points like that having flamethrowers or something similar, so it seems a bit odd that the grunts carry those for no discernable reason, seeing as they use normal guns. Maybe it was left over from the Cremators?
probably just an oxygen tank so they don't breathe in any of the Xen spore stuff. Its why grunts outside the QZ don't have tanks or filters on their gas masks.

I can see why the feature was removed since the stunstick in garry’s mod is basically just a slightly worse version of the crowbar. Comparing the two the stunstick actually swings slower then the crowbar does and has a very brief cool down time while the crowbar can be swung over and over in quick succession with no noticeable cool down.
