You have to be the worlds best teacher, best demonstrator, and most knowledgeable and most practiced and experienced instructor of pool. You have a level of devotion to pure absolute possibility. I wanted to teach pool, just because I like the idea of being a teacher, yet I am a beginner with about one year of pool, and do not own a pool table. I was creating a non-competative game where beginners and masters just take turns, regardless of sink a ball of not... so everyone gets equal time. It worked great, and because it is practice or for fun, the rules are flexible. I had as many as five people playing, in a drinking setting and if someone was gone, you do not wait, but just keep shooting. This way totally unskilled players get a chance. Also more experienced players try tougher shots, because it is open to do anything you want. Also people tend to be resistant, at first but once they are playing they love it. There are any versions that you or anyone wants to come up with. Yes competition games have their place, and this is not meant to replace them, but rather bring new players into the game, and also some how put us on the same team, for a support type energy. Later on some folks came up with a scoring system, and it became a different game. One point for a straight shot. two point for a combination, three points for a triple combination. Of course it no longer was a game that was encouraging new players and it became competitive. It no longer was free to shoot when a player was missing. But it was interesting that a new competitive game came out of it. Had I taken a bit more effort to invite some of the unskilled players it would have been more fun, but it was lacking the pressure to shoot really good due to an opponent or trying to win... for some. It is called quick-shot, because we wanted to keep it moving. But there is no rule, except to be considerate for other players... not make them bored to death... Do you know of any non-competition games that put all players on the same team and skills develop?

Concerning "non-competition" "games," as soon as you add scoring and make it a "game," it seems like "competition" is inevitable ... but that's part of what makes it fun.

My opponent... no longer an opponent was a superb player and said he wanted to play like that again. I wrote a book, (rough draft), titled beginner pool.... still in progress...
This is why I love pool so much, practically any shot is possible at any time, its virtually impossible to be left with a 0% chance of being able to make any shot at any given time; its all about creativity

hey kevin I was reading your article , I wanted to ask I been playing about 40 years also ,,,,,,,,,,, I can honestly say when I was younger I played as a 9 on a 1 to 10 scale and that was because I have the worst break in 9 ball OUCHHHHH , BUT I WANTED TO ASK YOU SINCE THE CLOTH AND STUFF GOT FASTER , HAVE YOU HAD PROBLEMS POCKETING BALLS ? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I am a fearless ball maker but since the no felt and simonis has come on the scene ,,,,,,,,, I am referring to tables with really fast felt have you felt you needed to adjust your stroke to accommodate your speed hence angles , I cannot for the life of me slow my stroke down to what is needed , and when using English especially running English which usually allowed me to use every rail at will I find that I cannot because of all the squirt on the cueball .
Another great video. Lots of really good information here to get us out of jams on the pool table. At 2:10 a cross side bank just misses without any spin on the cue ball. It was I believe a medium speed hit, maybe a bit less than that. I can't help but think that slow rolling that bank shot would have done the trick. Not compressing the side rail quite as much thereby extending the angle needed to pot the shot. Thanks Dr. Dave love your videos.
Thanks. I think you are right that slower speed might have worked, but the transferred spin is important to know for shots where slower speed alone doesn't work.

I thought of a great challenge for you, Doc. Get you high speed gear out and do a video on spin reversal at the rail nose. Note that once the angle is wide enough, the effect no longer occurs. Between the 62% rail nose height on a regulation table and the coefficient of friction between that and the ball, you should be able to show us what spin reversal is and what it does, and do so at slight or no angle to the rail, and as the angle opens up and at what angle the effect switches over. This would be able to explain post collision cue ball rolls where complimentary English is used and where "inside English" is used. I think it would be a quite informative video. Also it also changes with ball velocity once higher levels of rail nose compression takes place. Also follow and draw affect it as well as when the ball is actually lofted a bit as it strikes. I hope you get the gist of what I am trying to convey here. Let me know what you think, bro.
@@DrDaveBilliards But a formal analysis of the claim of spin reversal at the rail and the fact that as that impact angle increases, the claim of reversal disappears. And also ball pace enters into it. I feel that is a separate thing. Also table design enters into it. IF the rail nose IS at the regulated height of 62% of the ball diameter, one gets one behavior, but on a poorly assembled table where the nose is too high, a 'pinch' occurs. Too low, and the balls start hopping around when pace is introduced. And I have watched many bank pool games where a high speed cross corner bank has no time to curl so much as in your slower paced shots. One reason I shoot hard is because I negate cloth effects on the ball. I can "project" the cue ball to the object ball and carry all of my intended English into the ball on impact, whereas a full table slow roll with English disturbs the path and is many times completely gone by the time it gets to the object ball, and typically strikes it at other than the intended point. Efren's four rail shot is pretty firmly done and he uses extreme outside English, which he transfers to the object ball. I see others perform the shot slow pace, but I get far better results using Efren's method. Even my kick angles reside in my head better at higher pace cueing. I do not give a slow pace shot the time to morph the outcome based on pace, because I rarely shoot them slowly. I am likely as unorthodox as it gets. None of that pre-shot routine crud. I 'see' the shot as I approach the table. It is not hard, it is only two squares. One might notice as well that I do not often get down low on the cue with my head lined up and my chin on the stick like so many players I see. Nearly all of my shots are with me standing over the shot/table, looking down on the whole thing. I was always able to see my shot line simply from my stick. I could always see "square" and "plumb" and whether a picture or window was hung straight. For some reason 'perpendicular to the Earth' has always been something I had naturally. I also shoot 'dead nuts' from the hip too. And in nearly every drafting class I ever took way back in the '70s as a kid I found myself drawing pool tables and Pyramids. I'm glad you liked it. Concerning graphics showing where the tip is hitting the CB, watch again ... I do show english diagrams (where the tip hits the ball) for every shot where it is not obvious.
I understand the physics behind using a tennis ball and a dining table, especialli mase shots, Since i dont have billiard table.. Thats 10 years ago, im eagered to learn how pro did it.. I became a champ on our town.. Theres no youtube that time.. When u want to learn somthing and you put your heart on it, you can achieve it..
Great film. I've noticed how speed straightens the line but I'd never thought about spin being passed on. It might explain what I've sometimes assumed to be dodgy cushions. Does the same apply to snooker or does something about the balls reduce this effect?
All pool physics principles apply to all billiard games (pool, snooker, 3-cushion billiards, carom, etc.). However, the larger table size and tighter pockets on a snooker table make "doubles" (bank shots) extremely risky propositions. Conditions like ball cleanliness are also important. Old, beat up, and dirty balls will throw and transfer spin more.
DrDaveBilliards yeah, that makes sense that it would usually not show up so much. I'm just wondering though if you were to play a double from near the cushion with side on a snooker table? Your example with the long black double with side is quite startling and explains a lot. I've seen cushions seemingly reacting "wrongly" with an object ball quite often on a pool table. It explains a lot. However, I don't really remember seeing similar effects on a snooker table. Maybe the smaller balls make them more understated, even if doubling from near the cushion?
Pool equipment quality and conditions can vary quite a bit, especially in American bars (pubs) where the tables are abused and not cared for. Also, the cushions on pool tables are different than those on snooker tables, and the height they are mounted (along with rail construction) can have an effect on how the table banks. Regardless, I would expect the effects of spin to be similar on pool and snooker equipment. I would try out the shots on a snooker table, but I don't have convenient access to one.
that 8 ball 5 ball bank set up with right English on the cue ball is so slick...thats so cool how the cue ball gets out of the way while the 8 ball is charged up with left English...that took a second to process...thanks for the knowledge

Watch the video again. For the shots where the tip position on the CB is important, I show where the tip is hitting the CB with the illustrated spin diagrams (the black spot on the white circle shows where the tip is hitting the CB). Elevating the cue with the last drill is "cheating" because it allows you to masse the CB to change the angle. The drill challenge is to change the angle with only draw and sidespin (with the cue as level as possible).

Yes. Cut-induced spin (with no CB sidespin) is maximum at about a 1/2-ball hit. At fuller hits like this (with smaller cut angles), there still is CIS,, but the amount of spin transfer is larger with some inside english.
in the example where use back and right spin to curve the ball (0.31). I think the same can be achieved with just more right spin, you do not need the low spin in that shot if you can add more right side spin
I don't think right spin alone would work with this shot on most tables. The draw is providing most of the shortening and curving action on this shot. Try it out.
I am saying this because in your video I see you put lots of low and just a little of side spin. If you aimed a bit higher in the cushion but with full right you could still pot the black (the cue ball would not curve but the angle would shorten). I also would like you to demonstrate the effect of high spin in bank shots
Concerning using topspin on bank shots, a very small amount of bottom spin can be transferred to the OB, but not enough to make a significant difference. Although sidespin transfer is very important in many shots. hey ,,,,,,,,, that's awesome camera work and information I only wish I had enough faith in tables and cloth and tips and rails nowdays to attempt some of that . the speed and spin isnt all that dfifficult but when you narrowed the path to the inside was awesome , my only question and after playing pool for over 40 years ,,,,,,, the newer cloths have killed my pool game ., any little bit of spin or speed ruins all my lines and even squirts the cueball with any English .

John Cooper - Art of Social On that shot, because of the obstacle balls, left will not help. Sidespin changes the angle the CB comes off the rail but doesn’t affect the bend.
John Cooper - Art of Social Reverse spin shortens the rebound and running spin lengthens the rebound off the cushion (allowing you to hit higher or lower on the rail, maybe to help avoid an obstacle), but only top/bottom spin curve the post-rebound path.
I would easily play against him I would learn a lot I play a lot of great shooters and ask them at the end sure I get my ass beat but they help me learn and there really helpful

In another video (ruclips.net/video/28IOk49QAKQ/видео.html), Gareth Potts explains how follow and draw on CB can affect the rebound angle on OB: in bank shots, follow on CB makes OB go wide, while draw on CB makes OB come short. I was curious if you have any insight on why this might be the case? Until watching that video, my initial thoughts on this had been that vertical spin transfer (reversed) should actually do the opposite by bending the OB path after wall hit. Though now that I think of it, the amount of spin transferred to the OB is probably too negligible for that to happen and likely makes no meaningful difference.

I dont get it ....You say a few times that the CB spin transfers spin to the OB ...but there are many videos on RUclips showing that doesn't happen...and your videos (at 3.38 etc) show no spin being transferred

With the shot at 3:38, sidespin is most definitely transferred to the 8-ball. You can see the number on the ball turn sideways. Also, the rebound angle off the rail is affected dramatically. No sidespin remains after rebound off the rail, but the sidespin into the rail is what makes that shot work so well.
Here's a way to think of it with physics. Watch a spinning ball hit a rail, then watch it lose a lot of spin after contact. That kinetic energy had to go somewhere and most of it was likely transferred to a directional change in the cue ball after contact, with a small amount lost as heat from friction. Remember, the lost spin HAS to be converted to another form of energy, and it is, causing the ball to be thrown at a steeper or shallower angle than expected depending on spin direction.
it is very hard to pick up the spin transfer by watching only the object ball's spin, especially the reverse bank you mentioned at 3:38. you can easily see its effects though when trajectory changes off the cushion..

@@DrDaveBilliards But a formal analysis of the claim of spin reversal at the rail and the fact that as that impact angle increases, the claim of reversal disappears. And also ball pace enters into it. I feel that is a separate thing. Also table design enters into it. IF the rail nose IS at the regulated height of 62% of the ball diameter, one gets one behavior, but on a poorly assembled table where the nose is too high, a 'pinch' occurs. Too low, and the balls start hopping around when pace is introduced. And I have watched many bank pool games where a high speed cross corner bank has no time to curl so much as in your slower paced shots. One reason I shoot hard is because I negate cloth effects on the ball. I can "project" the cue ball to the object ball and carry all of my intended English into the ball on impact, whereas a full table slow roll with English disturbs the path and is many times completely gone by the time it gets to the object ball, and typically strikes it at other than the intended point. Efren's four rail shot is pretty firmly done and he uses extreme outside English, which he transfers to the object ball. I see others perform the shot slow pace, but I get far better results using Efren's method. Even my kick angles reside in my head better at higher pace cueing. I do not give a slow pace shot the time to morph the outcome based on pace, because I rarely shoot them slowly. I am likely as unorthodox as it gets. None of that pre-shot routine crud. I 'see' the shot as I approach the table. It is not hard, it is only two squares. One might notice as well that I do not often get down low on the cue with my head lined up and my chin on the stick like so many players I see. Nearly all of my shots are with me standing over the shot/table, looking down on the whole thing. I was always able to see my shot line simply from my stick. I could always see "square" and "plumb" and whether a picture or window was hung straight. For some reason 'perpendicular to the Earth' has always been something I had naturally. I also shoot 'dead nuts' from the hip too. And in nearly every drafting class I ever took way back in the '70s as a kid I found myself drawing pool tables and Pyramids.

Great film. I've noticed how speed straightens the line but I'd never thought about spin being passed on. It might explain what I've sometimes assumed to be dodgy cushions. Does the same apply to snooker or does something about the balls reduce this effect?
All pool physics principles apply to all billiard games (pool, snooker, 3-cushion billiards, carom, etc.). However, the larger table size and tighter pockets on a snooker table make "doubles" (bank shots) extremely risky propositions. Conditions like ball cleanliness are also important. Old, beat up, and dirty balls will throw and transfer spin more.
DrDaveBilliards yeah, that makes sense that it would usually not show up so much. I'm just wondering though if you were to play a double from near the cushion with side on a snooker table? Your example with the long black double with side is quite startling and explains a lot. I've seen cushions seemingly reacting "wrongly" with an object ball quite often on a pool table. It explains a lot. However, I don't really remember seeing similar effects on a snooker table. Maybe the smaller balls make them more understated, even if doubling from near the cushion?
Pool equipment quality and conditions can vary quite a bit, especially in American bars (pubs) where the tables are abused and not cared for. Also, the cushions on pool tables are different than those on snooker tables, and the height they are mounted (along with rail construction) can have an effect on how the table banks. Regardless, I would expect the effects of spin to be similar on pool and snooker equipment. I would try out the shots on a snooker table, but I don't have convenient access to one.

that 8 ball 5 ball bank set up with right English on the cue ball is so slick...thats so cool how the cue ball gets out of the way while the 8 ball is charged up with left English...that took a second to process...thanks for the knowledge

All of the techniques in this video should work on an older cloth. You just might need more speed on some of the shots.

Watch the video again. For the shots where the tip position on the CB is important, I show where the tip is hitting the CB with the illustrated spin diagrams (the black spot on the white circle shows where the tip is hitting the CB).

Elevating the cue with the last drill is "cheating" because it allows you to masse the CB to change the angle. The drill challenge is to change the angle with only draw and sidespin (with the cue as level as possible).

Have you done 3:38 without spin to show what just the cut induced spin would achieve?
Yes. Cut-induced spin (with no CB sidespin) is maximum at about a 1/2-ball hit. At fuller hits like this (with smaller cut angles), there still is CIS,, but the amount of spin transfer is larger with some inside english.
U do play is amazing man
in the example where use back and right spin to curve the ball (0.31). I think the same can be achieved with just more right spin, you do not need the low spin in that shot if you can add more right side spin
I don't think right spin alone would work with this shot on most tables. The draw is providing most of the shortening and curving action on this shot. Try it out.
I am saying this because in your video I see you put lots of low and just a little of side spin. If you aimed a bit higher in the cushion but with full right you could still pot the black (the cue ball would not curve but the angle would shorten). I also would like you to demonstrate the effect of high spin in bank shots
Concerning using topspin on bank shots, a very small amount of bottom spin can be transferred to the OB, but not enough to make a significant difference. Although sidespin transfer is very important in many shots. For more info and videos related to these topics, see:

hey ,,,,,,,,, that's awesome camera work and information I only wish I had enough faith in tables and cloth and tips and rails nowdays to attempt some of that . the speed and spin isnt all that dfifficult but when you narrowed the path to the inside was awesome , my only question and after playing pool for over 40 years ,,,,,,, the newer cloths have killed my pool game ., any little bit of spin or speed ruins all my lines and even squirts the cueball with any English .
Fast, slick cloth has definitely changed the game some.

John Cooper - Art of Social On that shot, because of the obstacle balls, left will not help. Sidespin changes the angle the CB comes off the rail but doesn’t affect the bend.

John Cooper - Art of Social Reverse spin shortens the rebound and running spin lengthens the rebound off the cushion (allowing you to hit higher or lower on the rail, maybe to help avoid an obstacle), but only top/bottom spin curve the post-rebound path.

I'll assume you are talking about the fast-speed bank used to shorten the angle. I hit that center ball (no spin at all).

In another video (ruclips.net/video/28IOk49QAKQ/видео.html), Gareth Potts explains how follow and draw on CB can affect the rebound angle on OB: in bank shots, follow on CB makes OB go wide, while draw on CB makes OB come short. I was curious if you have any insight on why this might be the case?
Until watching that video, my initial thoughts on this had been that vertical spin transfer (reversed) should actually do the opposite by bending the OB path after wall hit. Though now that I think of it, the amount of spin transferred to the OB is probably too negligible for that to happen and likely makes no meaningful difference.

Are the tables in your videos 8 or 9 feet tables?
The table in my older videos (this one included) is 8' (with green cloth). All of my newer and future videos are on a 9' table (with blue cloth).

I like practicing doing kick shots when object ball is at side pocket aiming left then using extreme lowright English.
I dont get it ....You say a few times that the CB spin transfers spin to the OB ...but there are many videos on RUclips showing that doesn't happen...and your videos (at 3.38 etc) show no spin being transferred

With the shot at 3:38, sidespin is most definitely transferred to the 8-ball. You can see the number on the ball turn sideways. Also, the rebound angle off the rail is affected dramatically. No sidespin remains after rebound off the rail, but the sidespin into the rail is what makes that shot work so well.
Here's a way to think of it with physics. Watch a spinning ball hit a rail, then watch it lose a lot of spin after contact. That kinetic energy had to go somewhere and most of it was likely transferred to a directional change in the cue ball after contact, with a small amount lost as heat from friction. Remember, the lost spin HAS to be converted to another form of energy, and it is, causing the ball to be thrown at a steeper or shallower angle than expected depending on spin direction.
it is very hard to pick up the spin transfer by watching only the object ball's spin, especially the reverse bank you mentioned at 3:38. you can easily see its effects though when trajectory changes off the cushion..

Any size table is better than no table; but, obviously, it is best to practice on the size and brand of table on which you plan to compete.
