MF DOOM - The Man Behind The Mask Documentary

- Legendary rapper and producer MF DOOM is covered in this documentary. Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. DOOM is a British-American rapper. He performed and released music under several stage names, most notably MF Doom (stylized in all caps). DOOM debuted during hip hop's golden age of the late 1980s and became a major figure in underground hip hop of the early 21st century. Upon his death, Variety called him "one of the most celebrated, unpredictable and enigmatic figures in independent hip-hop". People have called him The Phantom of the Opera of Hip Hop.
Born in London, Dumile moved with his family to Long Island, New York, at a young age. He began his musical career in 1988 as a member of the trio KMD, performing under the name Zev Love X with his younger brother DJ Subroc and another MC called Rodan. After hearing about the group from 3rd Bass, A&R Dante Ross signed KMD to Elektra Records and their recording debut arrived on 3rd Bass’s song “The Gas Face” from The Cactus Album. Their debut album Mr. Hood was released in 1991 and attained modest success with the singles “Peachfuzz” and “Who Me?” KMD disbanded in 1993.
After taking a hiatus from music, Dumile reemerged in 1998, when he began performing at open mic events while wearing a mask. He adopted the MF Doom persona and rarely made unmasked public appearances thereafter. His metal mask resembles that of Marvel Comics super-villain Doctor Doom, who is depicted rapping on the cover of his 1999 debut solo album Operation: Doomsday. DOOM’s most prolific period was in the early 2000s, when he released four studio albums and two collaborative albums between 2003 and 2005, using the MF Doom moniker as well as the pseudonyms King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn. In the 2010s, he relocated to London, where he recorded more music.
MF DOOM frequently collaborated with other producers and rappers, most notably Madlib, under the moniker Madvillain. The duo's 2004 album Madvillainy received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and has been cited as DOOM’s magnum opus and a landmark album in hip hop. DOOM’s other notable collaborations include Danger Doom (with Danger Mouse), Doomstarks (with Ghostface Killah), JJ Doom (with Jneiro Jarel), NehruvianDoom (with Bishop Nehru), and Czarface Meets Metal Face (with Czarface).
In 2003, MF DOOM released the King Geedorah album Take Me to Your Leader. Geedorah is credited as producer, but only appears as an MC on four tracks. The majority of vocal tracks feature guest MCs, and the album features several instrumental montages of sampled vocals from old movies and TV shows-a technique employed on most of Doom’s albums. Later in 2003, DOOM released the LP Vaudeville Villain under the moniker Viktor Vaughn (another play on Doctor Doom, whose "real name" is Victor von Doom). In 2004 he released a follow-up LP under the Viktor Vaughn moniker, Venomous Villain. Later in 2004, the second MF Doom album Mm..Food was released by Minnesota-based label Rhymesayers Entertainment.
DOOM’s first commercial breakthrough came in 2004, with the album Madvillainy, created with producer Madlib under the group name Madvillain. Released by Stones Throw Records, the album was a critical and commercial success. It has since become known as a MF DOOM masterpiece.

What do I do now when someone tells me to take them to our leader!?
I feel so weird knowing that DOOM might blow up now unlike ever before. Real hip hop heads know the villain but in many ways he was our best kept secret. He's just too much for most, between the ridiculous rhyme schemes, the hard to follow stories he creates in your head with his lyricism and his unique often off beat flow that just slaps different. DOOM was unlike any other and for so long it's been my way of identifying the real lovers of the genre. if you fuck with the super villain that you fuck with that real hip hop. He never wanted the fame, the recognition wasn't the motivation. It was about the art, it was about the beats and the rhymes. That shit has mostly been forgotten, so if losing DOOM is the only way to get a bit of that back, then what a sacrifice! It's time the world appreciates the greatness that's been left behind by Daniel Dumile, the greatest to ever do it
Just hoping his wife owns his music? If not they are going to water his legacy down. They will have all types of pop hip hop producers mixing and blending the man's material like never before.
@@mustafahajj that's terrifying and legit the last thing he would have ever wanted. The news of his death coming out late, to me, sounds like Dumile may have known his time was near and could have even asked that it's not made public, he never wanted eyes on his personal life. Assuming that's possible I also would assume DOOM would make sure that his hard work is protected and kept sacred. Let's hope
@@ngould2420 Let's hope.

I can remember; the first time I heard DOOM when he reemerged on the hip hop scene was the song Impostas off of underground hip hop dot com back in 97; I was like, yo, this is ill. Then I heard Tick Tock with MF GRIMM, and then Gas Drawls, damn!!
I remember the Hey! and Operation Greenbacks vinyl on the walls at Fat Beats. I didn't have turntables but as soon as I saw that cartoon Dr. Doom face on the CD cover I copped it. I remember listening to Doomsday and just zoning out to the scratches in the end. Shit was and still is a masterpiece.
As a kid growing up in a small ass ex Soviet Union country where punk is still the most popular music genre, i hated hip hop.
It was the i guess "bling" era hip hop, 50 cent, lil wayne when they first started mixing hip hop and pop music. And it didn't help that a lot of our own hip hop was more tongue in cheek type funny rap.
By chance, when I first started making my own music for fun, i found one of does highlighted rhymes video on MF DOOM "meat grinder" and it absolutely blew my mind and "tick tock" ft. MF GRIMM broke it.
I'm still quite picky about what type of hip hop i like ((mainly Denzel Curry and Token)) DOOM made me love this genre of music and showed me how nearly limitless one can be with writing.

Mad props to all those involved in makin this doc proper. Respect. The footage is priceless, and finishing with the MF/Robert Glasper Rhinestone remix was just beauty.
From Zev to MF and all the monikers we know him by, Daniel Dumile will never be forgotten. Only remembered as the truly unique Artist and force of nature that he most definitely was.
Rest in Peace and Power DOOM. MF The Supavillain!!! One Love.
Fun fact: His dad was Zimbabwean, hence the name Dumile (prob Doo-mee-leh) and in Ndebele (his father's language) it means Famous. The irony is painful in that he spent the majority of his life resisting fame behind that mask.
Dumile. Famous.
To us he was more than that though. He was legend.
Thanx for pronouncing his surname the correct way unlike the rest of internet idiots who are arguing it's pronounced "Doo-meh-lay" cause they it on wikipedia
Always thought I’d have the chance to see him year later still can’t believe he’s gone. Seeing madlib for the second time in November, gonna make sure to appreciate it even more

His name will forever echo in the LA underground RIP
Yup. From Highland Park to New York he'll be remembered.
It’s still so hard to believe he’s gone. When you hear him speak, you can hear the passion about the music. When you hear the music, you can feel the unique style. He was a legend. RIP
Nicely put together film. Doom’s music will live forever... listened to 1000’s of hours of Doom and 1000’s more to come. RIP to a true talent ✌🏻
Perfect ending, that live performance brought a tear to my eye. RIP KING
Rest In Riches, my guy. You deserve so much more than you received while alive. I'm sorry your son died at 14 in 2017, your brother in the early 90s. You left a huge print on the hip hop scene and history and I'm so sad that you're actually gone.
With the tragedies in his life, I just hope he passed on good terms with his family, friends, and with God.
Thank you for this upload. Brought a smile to my face hand on his hip and spits flows so gorgeous! R.I.P. DOOM.
DOOM gone live forever like Henrietta Lack's cells 🙌✊
Metal Face when hes rapping
Metal Fingers when hes producing 👐🏽
Mad Flows at all time
Its mad to see no one with their phone out at the concert. Everyone was full in it 🤘
I never understood why people do that shit recording will sound like ass cuz the phone mic and its so loud, I feel like people do it to "prove" they where there or some shit. imagine being more concerned about your shot than the artist you came to see.
@@GrandDawggy yeah man, its 100% just to prove they were there. Quite sad tbh
this dude was so unbelievably nice and genuine. What a stand-up guy. Mad respect for him and his amazing craft. Hope he’s resting in peace
thank you for the stabilised footage fam
Mf doom was & still is the dopest underground hip hopper there ever was & ever will be period ....king of underground hip hop
Man, it hurts! Rest in Power G. You left a great legacy that will inspire us all to persevere and stay consistent no matter what. Thank you MF DOOM
This was awesome! Thanks.
what a great documentary. really paints doom in a positive light. I love how he was purely about the music. Truely a master of his craft. The one and only MF DOOM. Also had no idea madlib was from the westcoast. Mixing the westcoast and eastcoast sound is a match made in heaven
Nothing brings a tear to my eye more than the fact that this Underground King is finally getting the mainstream love and admiration he deserved this entire time. I'm sad that it took so long, but I'm happy it happened. RIP METAL FACE, gone before your time.

Gives me so much chills, this man is such an inspiration. Bumping DOOM til I die!
That live version of Hey! Is nucking futs, flawless!
This is hands down - THE BEST!!!!!! collection of DOOM info, footage, and in depth presentation of who/ what DOOM was to the world, rap industry, and us, the fans who love him for him and all the incarnations he embodied. I literally have music non stop in my ear and my entire life is soundtracked to every generation of music my pops jammed to right into what's hot right now. DOOM has been with me in the background playlist of my life for over two decades! So much of my hardest and best memories are backed by his beats and lyrics. Even when I was at the bottom he was crackin and lifting me up through his lyrics and presentation. I could be anywhere in the world bumpin his tracks and immediately be transported back to being a shorty in Bushwick watching cartoons and joking on the stoop. God bless this rap legend and may he give his fam the strength to endure his loss, and fully feel our love for him - Villian, Father, Husband, Legend! The Bruce Lee of rap!
