As a 50 year old man who was once thin and active but now is sitting at 320 lbs and lethargic, let me tell you, you don't want to end up where I am now. I ate and drank anything I wanted when I wanted for the past 25 - 30 years and it has all caught up with me. Just about every symptom on this board is what I am now experiencing daily and let me tell you, it is no joke. I now worry about my health everyday. I had nearly all of these. It culminated with a one week intensive care stay after a hemmorhagic stroke. They didn't ask once about diet, only everything else and then prescribed a blood pressure medication. I changed to a low carb and sometimes keto diet plus intermittent diet after leaving and have not been sick in any way (including head or stomach aches)in two years. My lifelong allergies and sleep apnea are gone as are any aches or pains plus waking to urinate six times a night. No mood swings. No endless gas. Lost excess weight. No more medications after first round. If anyone is wondering, cut sugars and veg oils as close to zero as you can and carbs to a low number, I just wish I had known this as a kid or as a teen.

I haven't been diagnosed with this yet, but I literally have had ALL these symptoms for almost 10 years. It's gotten so intense lately that life isn't very enjoyable.
Over the past few years I've been doing I.F. and weight training, diet changes and monitoring, and I've been managing it alright.
I was diagnosed with IBS a few years back, but that was it. It went no where other than ME taking control of it.
It's insane how you talk about everything I've dealt with and complained about to doctors for years, yet I haven't gotten an answer. THIS seems like the answer, so I'll focus on getting a doctor to check me out.

A Year ago I was scheduled for a surgery, and my doctor wanted me to get some blood work done. I was completely floored when my fasting glucose was 355 and my A1c was 13.5. I was caught off guard because i didn't exhibit any of the classic signs for diabetes. I was considers slightly overweight (15 lbs), no blurred vision, no nerve pain, etc. For 11 months I was struggling to maintain low Glucose. 135-160 and an A1c of 7.5. I was prescribed 500mg of metformin daily, and a low carb diet. I found Dr Ekberg's videos about a month ago. And I started the Keto Diet, with intermittent fasting. Mostly 16/8 but sometimes 18/6. With the Keto Diet, I eat less, and feel more full for longer. I fast from 6:00pm to 10:00am. I take a 10 mile Bike ride 3 times a week. Well the results speak for themselves. I lost 20lbs ( Considered Healthy on the BMI scale) My daily glucose ranges 85-110, and I feel like I did in mt 20's. July 1 brings my one year anniversary of my type 2 diabetes diagnosis. I wanted to thanks Dr Ekberg for steering me to right path.

I suspected it was coming from what I was eating so I made a list and one by one began removing each food for one week at a time and when i removed Sodium nitrate my sugar dropped drastically over a period of 6 months. There are more symptoms associated with diabetes such as not being able to sleep extreme fatigue caused by the pancreas constantly trying to release insulin but sugar level never reaching the desired 4.9 anxiety depression anger and very bad stamina due to cardiovascular issues. I'm 56 today and run 8 kms twice a week without even breaking a sweat and I almost forgot ... I never went to a doctor, my symptoms directed me to the answer. Great video doctor

I've even heard people say their doctor told them zero carbs, and they didn't know what to eat. I do understand zero sugar, but there's a difference.

My mother would always sit me down and explain all of this and ensure that I clearly understood. Well, last summer I started experiencing some signs of Neuropathy which sent me straight to the doctor to get some blood work done. I would experience this after a day or two of heavy socializing which included beer and high carb foods. I refused to be on Metformin and decided to make lifestyle changes. I did very strict Keto and IF for 3 months (October - December) and now do Low Carb and Hi Protein with IF of 18/6. The reason for the diet change was that I found I was losing a lot of muscle mass. I am now at the gym doing resistance training and putting more weight off. I am now down 42 pounds as of the first week of October. I am also putting muscle mass back on. All of this at the age of 55.

I'm someone who spent two decades feeling both exhausted and still hungry after eating, debilitating brain fog/headaches daily, IBS symptoms, frequent urination, skin tags, trouble sleeping, irritability and weight gain. My doctors even theorized I had some debilitating disease. I was given Metformin and it only made me more hungry and anxious. So I tried removing all gluten and sugar from my diet.
After I stopped eating gluten and sugar, all these things went away. I don't know if dropping sugar and gluten were the silver bullet I needed. But I found that within two weeks of going off of them cold turkey, I had a lot more willpower and no headaches. With that added willpower, I was able to exercise daily and eat only fruit/vegetables/legumes/lean meat/dairy/potatoes for my meals. Which then resolved all the other problems. I experimented with trying to eat a small amount of gluten and sugar during Christmas of 2019 (dinner rolls, pie and fudge) and the symptoms instantly came back. It was like a train ran over my head, I had such a massive headache and brain fog. So I went back to eating zero gluten/sugar and the symptoms disappeared within three days. They haven't been back the whole month of January.
Long story short, in my experience, getting off gluten and sugar works. Hopefully most people don't have as severe of symptoms as I did. But I'd still recommend avoiding added sugar for anyone.

Thank you for your very good explanation! I just want to point out I had a lot of the symptoms but nothing was done because my blood sugar was always between the normal range. Years later I heard about pre- diabetic ant that your blood sugar can still be normal but that your insulin to produce ‘ the normal’ sugar level can be way out of control, you can produce till 10 times more insulin to keep a normal blood sugar level. Also the insulin level stays high a very long time after a meal. This makes you sick (a lot of the symptoms you mention above) and gain weight. Therefore the advice from some doctors is to test not only for blood sugar level but also for insulin resistance (Kraft test). You also can test it yourself in practice: reduce dramatically the carbs and the sugars (keto) to reduce insulin production. Do you loose weight as a consequence of less insulin production? Then you had insulin resistance. Insulin is the fat storage hormone that pushes the sugar in the cells to remove it from the bloodstream, and insulin simultaneously blocks the release of fat from your fat cells. (This is logic it would be weird to have a system that stores in and out at the same time, If you lower the insulin dramatically by almost removing the sugars and the carbs, the fats can be released from storage, 17:18 you loose weight and you have proven the insulin resistance.

Problem is he may not be correct. Another theory suggests excess fat in the cells interferes with insulin signalling . Ask yourself why people on a whole food plant based diet with carbs in the 60-80 percent range have low rates of type 2 diabetes. Keto diets may just mask the underlying condition. When keto dieters eat carbs again does their sugar spike ? If it does nothing has been cured and they may be making the problem worse by driving more fat into the cells.

Wow, that is an eye-opener! I knew about some of this because my husband developed diabetes. But I had no idea about a lot of the other stuff. My husband's friend also has diabetes and as much as the doctor tries to help him, our friend doesn't understand and then takes no notice. He continues to eat and drink a lot of carbs. Watching him of late we have seen a downturn in his abilities and I am positive he is on a timer that is about to run out. If he survives 2022 I will be surprised. Thank you for opening my eyes that much wider.

Today, I am 20 kilos lighter than when I started Keto !! I have new glasses, because my eyes were getting better !!
My skin feels wonderful. I sleep better. My body odour has almost disappeared (I did NOT expect that. NOBODY mentions this, in their videos !). My armpits are neutral in smell. My whole body is, actually... More energy. No digestion problems. Skin tags are getting smaller and the small ones have already disappeared. I haven't taken any pills or injected any insulin for a couple of months, now. I ONLY use my handkerchiefs for cleaning my glasses.... My teeth stay clean. It's a breeze. Very, very little plaque and it's easy to remove. And lots of other nice improvements were noticable.
Keto is easy. And the best diet ever. Period.

My girlfriend is a type 1 diabetic and wasn't sick and diagnosed til she was 28 so she had to relearn how eat somewhat, not completely because her mom was a health nut so she and her brother weren't raised on prepackaged or fast food to begin with. But she also has a very physically demanding job as a train conductor and engineer, for freight not people lol,, and on call 6 days a week. Depending on what they call her for and where it could be 18 hours from the time she leaves til she gets back so she had to learn to meal prep and great snacks that she can eat Depending if her blood sugar is higher than normal or if she needs something to hold her over if she's running low but can't stop to eat! My favorite thing she preps are her awesome breakfast sandwiches using josephs pita bread that's low carb. Honestly perfect for anyone. If you need any advice or suggestions feel free to let me know and I'm happy to help

Dr Ekberg....there are some people that are really smart and worth listening to. Some that say some stuff that I'd rather not waste my time on. Then there are those who have the most vital information necesary....BUT they are poor at explaining (teaching).....YOU Dr. Ekberg are EXCEPTIONAL in your knowledge and your teaching abilities. As a scientist and former teacher myself... I can only applaud you for helping me make sense out of nonsense and not wasting my time doing a 100 years of studying (I don't think I have another 100 years left on this earth, LOL).
I learned from some excellent professors as an undergrad...one of the things I learned was that if you can't reduce things to the least common denominator and explain your subject simply enough that even grandma can understand it....you probably really don't have a firm grasp of the concepts and knowledge yourself. i.e. : see Einstein and his simple equation for energy.

I think this is unfair to doctors. Where I live doctors aren't paid by the number of prescriptions they write. They are actually discouraged to overprescribe because it is taxing on the public health insurance system and most doctors are public employees here.
The problem is that international recommendations on diet have dictated that we should eat a low fat/sodium whole foods diet, which necessarily pushes the amount of carbs up as a percentage of energy intake. Probably 90% or more of doctors have no intention of making themselves rich at the expense of their patients' health.

With the exception of doctor Ekberg and other similarly knowledgable practitioners, many doctors are ignorant of the primary effects of nutrition on the body having never been taught it in medical school. The massive amounts of incorrect information and the the active disinformation relating to the causes of cardiovasular disease and diabetes (fats vs sugar) and the role of carbohydrates make it extremely difficult for the average person to sort out. Add to that the capitalism drive for profitable mega corporations, is it surprising that the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry are the way they are? There is not nearly the amount of money to be made disseminating nutrition information that would correct or prevent a lot of diseases than the current system. The answers to most of the world's major health issues have been hiding in plain sight. It is thanks to the efforts of Dr. Ekberg and others that the message is finally getting out.

I was diagnosed as prediabetic. The doctor's office took a "wait and see" attitude. No one mentioned I'd be diabetic in 5 years if I didn't do something about it! The traditional healthcare system has failed us. (By the way, I've done something about it on my own. Now I found an "Integrative Medicine" office that seems to understand.)
