The days are A&R work are few and far thanks to majors wanting the packages to be complete when coming to them. Indie artist can benefit from having A&Rs and the older generation understand the value of having them.
Jom James Prince himself had a label and restructured its business operations to be better. He didn’t reinvent the wheel, he showed artist how to use the services vs signing as artist. Distrokid, soundcloud, youtube, Spotify, tidal, itunes music, they are all just the new labels. The labels took advantage back then because there were no information outlets for people who did not have the educational backgrounds to deal with a contract. Now, the indie labels are ran by the artist and they just do it better. Labels still matter.
@@trevnspace Labels do matter, but most are sharks waiting to prey on innocent newcoming artists by pressuring them to sign shitty contracts for ridiculous percentages and taking creative control of their music simply because they don't know any better. Of course, it is a business and it may be out of my place to say this but I feel like most record labels don't understand that they're not in the wolf of wall street. This is an industry built on creativity and pure, uncensored expression and limiting an artist by any means seems counter-intuitive
When I see the role of A&R in artists vids, documentaries, RUclips, insta and snaps etc, all they see, to do is be the person who listens to the finished songs and then helps decide what to take to finalise to the label.
@@oraromaochi5584 it's a constant battle with the label for budgets and usually the suits exec don't see the vision they can't hear the sound for the artist for certain writers and or producers. Then getting artist to understand that this is a business it can easily turn into a 24/7 job

The Art of Rapping and Writing I've Found Almost Easy and Effortless but the business side is a whole nother capacity. Every Artist Needs Sone Sort of Team To Establish Build and Complete The Dream. You can't do it on ya own! Kev
It’s nothing more than a scouting and talent position, similar to recruiting. But after the artist is sign, you’re still responsible for helping them build their brand.
I remember in the 90s and early 2000s, at least from the outside looking in, A&R's were viewed in a very negative light. I remember rappers always talking s**t in their rhymes about A&R's trying to tell them what to do and how to make their music sound. I remember when Keith Murray went into the Def Jam offices around 2003 and beat up two A&Rs and subsequently got dropped from the label. DMX cussed out an A&R on MTV's Diary show on camera back in the day too. Seemed like one of the worst positions at a label because they had to tell artists things they didn't want to hear even tho the decisions came from the top down and they were just the middle man? I don't know its probably a lot different today tho because of social media, RUclips, audio streaming, and music sharing platforms.
Yo because of the internet/social media, predicting a hit is hard. So the determining factors industry gate keepers had isn’t working anymore because you can’t say who’s a Star now. Imagine if Lil nas x went to labels, imagine if xxx or juicewrld went straight to labels, they would have been turned down. Do A & R’s are in limbo.
S. H. If that’s what you really wanna do I wouldn’t say give it up. Maybe look into what makes an A and R, really study the industry’s climate and then formulate something of your own that resembles an A and R. Today really I think it’s about creating your own lane. You just have to figure out how to make it work and when it works figure out how to keep making it work cause the climate is always going to be changing. Technology is speeding things up (a little too much of you ask me lol)
