  • This is a grandfather clock that I found on Ebay, and just by chance, it was close to my location. The only drawback was that it was local pickup only. But fortunately, Brad and Scott Espe were kind enough to help with the delivery.
    Ever since I saw the cable-driven grandfather clock at the Skaalen assisted living facility in Stoughton, Wisconsin in 2007, I've always wanted to own one of my very own, and after 15 years, my dream of owning one has finally come true. Even though it doesn't have the night silence option, it does have many of the same features I've been looking for. This clock comes complete with moon dial, triple chimes, quarter-hour chime and hourly strike silence options, and instruction manual. You may notice that on the split-screen portion of the video where the clock and the movement are shown simultaneously, the videos may not be in perfect sync, but I got the timing down as close as I could. Anyway, please like, subscribe, and turn on notifications.

      @@tristangardner3889 Yeah...I always wanted one and it's the first piece of furniture I bought since I started my career last year. Do you have any advice about the upkeep? I want to pass this clock down to my niece and nephew.

    • @tristangardner3889
      @tristangardner3889  Год назад +1

      As a matter of fact, I do. You may know some of this advice already, but I'll give it you anyway.
      1. Clock movements need to be oiled every three to five years and cleaned every eight to ten years.
      2. The four legs located at the bottom of the clock are called levelers, and can be adjusted so that you can not only keep the clock balanced, but keep the ticking in beat too.
      3. There are safe zones where you can safely move the melody selector without risking damage to the melody wheel inside, provided that your clock has three to choose from, but it's best not to change the melody five minutes before the clock strikes any of the four quarter hours.
      4. The three weights on your clock should be labeled with an L, a C, and an R. The L weight goes on the left, and that weight controls the hourly strike. The C weight is the center weight, and controls the time. And the R weight is the right weight, and it controls the quarter hour chime.
      5. Most modern-day clocks have a self-correcting feature, where they'll correct themselves on the next hour. To set the time, you can move the minute hand backwards to the correct time.
      I hope this advice helps.

    Tristan, thank you for making the video. I just bought my first Howard Miller clock the other day & have to go pick it up. I am so excited and it has been a lifelong dream to have one of these. It is an absolutely stunning piece that I found. Question - I have been watching videos on moving the clock and I seem to have a good grasp on removing the weights, wrapping them up, not touching them with bare hands, wrapping up the pendulum, removing all the glass, etc. The question I have is that I have seen multiple opinions on laying the clock on its side if you are very careful. I have seen some say that you should never, ever lay a clock on its side for transport and I have also seen others say it is no problem if you protect the chime rods & lay the clock gently down on its side. Do you have any opinion on this? How did you move yours? I am just trying to determine if I need a moving van or if I can just use a friend's nice huge van to move the clock on its side.
    Thank you for this beautiful video & your advice.

      Those are excellent questions, for I had Brad and Scott Espe transport the clock in the back of their big SUV. Yes, the pendulum and the weights were wrapped up. The clock was actually transported on its back, not its side. When it arrived at my place, the Espes moved the clock together. Of course, not all the glass is removable. Just for safety, what I'd do is to try and protect the glass during transport. I hope it helps.

    I purchased one of these in an estate recently, it was missing the pendulum. I made a home made but am looking to put one on it that is proper weight. The one I hung must be to light because it is running extremely fast. Would you happen to have an idea of the appropriate weight of pendulum for this clock? any help is appreciated Thx

      @tristangardner3889  19 дней назад

      That's a great question. Even though I don't know the exact weight of the pendulum bob in this grandfather clock, I did some research on it and found out that a common one-second pendulum bob, kind of like what I have in mine, weighs around two kilograms, which is about four pounds, give or take. I don't know if the grandfather clock you purchased has an instruction manual, but you can consult that or ask a local clock shop for additional information. I hope the information I provided helps you. Best of luck.

    So I know how to get the beat perfectly spaced. Have you taken the pendulum off? Just push the part to one side then listen and see while it’s fast if you hear an even space in the tick. Then reattach the pendulum and enjoy.

      If the clock you're talking about is a triple chime clock, then yes, you can. My grandmother and great-grandmother once told me many years ago that the quarter-hour chimes are helpful to people who are visually impaired. I set most of my clocks (not all) to Westminster because that's the easiest chime to remember. Just be sure to change the chime selection during one of the safe zones on the clock and not while the clock is chiming.
