The guy they quoted in the split-second clip saying, “It’s not a good look”, was driving black out drunk in St john’s about two months ago and crashed into my friend’s car and flipped their vehicle. He’s a bartender.
@@saff1209 no you don't skaters know they will always be pushed to the edge of town where the homeless and junkies are.. we are the only ones that interact with them and try to change the community on a daily basis
This is so sus. Acting like a little concrete is a crime. Skaters need more places like these and it’s a shame when trusted news companies portray skaters as criminals
Bull crap that a skatepark would damage the structural integrity of the bridge - are you kidding me?? They should have let them build it, that's how burnside was made and it's become a landmark.
“It’s ridiculous!” Yeah ridiculously awesome. Maybe if there wasn’t so much governmental red tape around literally trying to do ANYTHING fun, skaters might have worked with the municipal Parks and Rec department to make a safer park. But they probably already knew that wasn’t going to happen so just went about it themselves. I don’t blame them.
We saw a public outcry when the Burnside Bridge skatepark was developed. Years after the fact, it works to foster a community of skaters and street artists from around the world. Lets give St. John's Bridge the same opportunity; a mini cultural hub. Wipe away your classist prejudice and take a moment to consider supporting a sport culture that thrives in Portland. Our public places should be at the discretion of public use and utilization. If we want to make altercations to these public places for PUBLIC use, then lets rally together to make this happen. We have a chance to blend history in honoring the St. John's bridge by welcoming a skate community and reimagining the use of space. My worry is that a resistance will gain traction supporting a "structural integrity" for the bridge. The skate bowl being developed here has no definitive offset indicators for disturbing this massive, sturdy bridge. To discredit those developing this bowl based on an authority of construction is inadequate; Portland's community of skaters capable of crafting with cement have the scultping integrity and applicable skate knowledge to develop this project safely if given the time; WE HAVE THE RESOURCES. The chance that construction working skaters are subcontracted anyways via expensive Parks and Recreation budgets to develop many of the skateparks Oregon has today should initiate a sense of trust in independent projects, not distort the role of skaters in the development of public infrastructure. This project is facing friction under the gaze of cultural oppression and a severe misunderstanding.
The graffiti has to go.... if they want to bomb, bomb the ramp but don’t deface the bridge and property around it.... that in part is why these old heads are having a shit hemorrhage....
Erik Lewis these are literally popping up all over the world, they’re usually pretty hidden and only usually have a small community of skaters who know where they are, used to be one in a abandoned military canteen that a couple of skaters built around me, they didn’t tell anyone about it for at least 3 years until one of us younger lads eventually found it. DIY Skateboarding is literally the best.
Then fund the skate park yourselves. You don't want us on the street, but you don't wanna help em get a proper skatepark built, let alone fund it. But you seem more than happy to dedicate money and manpower to taking it down. Good luck with that fence though. Everyone knows skaters HATE hopping fences to get to a spot. Jeez couldn't even track down a local skater to interview?
I guess that people rather see drug addicts and trash everywhere than skateboarders. I left my home town because i was under threat because i skateboard. Truth is Some people rather see people living/camping out doing meth doing opioids and getting drunk than someone riding a skateboard and having fun. I think there are a lot of very unhappy folks that hate to see someone having enjoyment that dose not come from something that hurts all of society.
Definitely the wrong cables...the cables that tether that bridge to the ground are unseen and would never be open to the elements. Not to mention they had better do a better inspection of that bridge because the foundation looks worse than the half finished pool.... real talk.
Maybe people will like your channel more if your for the skatepark bc in the end the boomers will be in retirement homes and the youth will be in control treat others the way you want to be treated
Lame, they only interviewed liberals. Also, no mention of making a positive impact out of this so called abomination. Come to Vancouver, WA if you want to build cool stuff like that.
I used to like channel 12, but i dont anymore.. Especialy when you talk about the weather, you never hardly mention other areas like clark co area or cowlitz co area, you only talk oregon weather most of the time.. Channel 2 is way better, cuz they mention my area most of the time.. Iam sure iam not only one who agrees..
A couple hundreds pounds makes it unsafe? thank god, there isnt cars driving on that bridge!

That’s definitely not a good look.
Figures
Building a DIY skatepark under a bridge is the best, most positive, most useful thing Anybody can do under a bridge. Skateboarding saves lives.
Heroin needles, or skateboarders? It seems the locals of St. John's prefer needles. Says a lot about their community!
We have a nice community at least mostly

They were just utilizing unused space. But then the fun police found out about it.
